1 JOHN R. WELLS CURRICULUM VITAE Dr. John Wells is a Professor of Management Practice in the Strategy Unit at Harvard Business School where he teaches the first year core course in strategy, his own second year elective course on strategic IQ for which he has researched and written numerous cases, and numerous executive education programs. Dr. Wells was brought up in Kent, England and attended Simon Langton Grammar School where he was awarded an open scholarship to Oxford University. Dr. Wells graduated from Oxford with a double first in physics, specializing in nuclear and solid state. On graduation, Dr. Wells joined Unilever on the UCMDS program (Unilever Companies Management Development Scheme) program. He was assigned to internal audit and trained as a cost and management accountant. He moved on from Unilever to Harvard Business School, where he was a George F Baker Scholar and graduated Valedictorian of the MBA Class of On graduating, he joined the Boston Consulting Group, first in Boston and then London, where he consulted in industries ranging from specialty chemicals and paper to laboratory instrumentation and footwear. In 1982, Dr. Wells joined Harvard Business School's Faculty to teach Industry and Competitor Analysis and Business Policy. In 1982 he was awarded a Dean's Doctoral Fellowship. He received his doctorate in 1984 after completing his thesis "In Search of Synergy", which quantified the impact of synergy on corporate profitability. The same year he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Business Policy Faculty, conducting research on the dynamics of competition and the application of artificial intelligence techniques to business problems. In 1986, Dr. Wells retuned to Europe and became Chief Executive of Monitor Company Europe Ltd., a subsidiary of the firm he created with Michael Porter and Mark Fuller. He built the European practice and directed strategy studies in a range of consumer goods, industrial goods, commodities and travel and leisure sectors. He also advised national and regional governments on competitiveness. During this time he also co- founded Datapaq, a digital data acquisition company serving the automotive and packaging industries that continues to be the leader in its field. Dr. Wells joined PepsiCo in 1994, initially as CFO of the European snacks division. He was then appointed CEO of Wedel, a PepsiCo affiliate and Poland's number one chocolate, biscuits, confectionery and snacks producer. In 1997 he was appointed CFO of Frito- Lay International, based in Dallas, Texas, with responsibility for all international snack operations.

2 In 1998, Dr. Wells joined the board of Thomson Travel Group, the UK's largest holiday company, responsible for the Group's strategy, mergers and acquisitions and e- commerce development. Dr. Wells invests in and advises a number of start- ups in a broad range of sectors from fruit packing to social networking. In early 2002, he joined Archie Norman, the ex- Chairman of ASDA in the UK, in a $1.3 billion management buy- in of Energis, the UK's third largest telecommunications service provider where he served on the Board and as Chairman of the Audit Committee. Energis was later sold to Cable and Wireless Plc. In the summer of 2002, Dr. Wells rejoined the Harvard Business School Faculty as the James M. Collins Fund Senior Lecturer in Strategy. In August 2003, he was appointed Professor of Management Practice. At this point, he initiated a major research project on why successful companies fail to respond to the need for strategic change and how they could over- come this inertia, develop higher strategic IQ, and demonstrate more strategic innovation. In 2008 Dr. Wells was appointed the President of IMD (International Institute for Management Development), a leading global business school based in Lausanne in Switzerland, and took the Nestle Professor Chair. In 2011, he returned to Harvard Business School as a Professor of Management Practice. Dr. Wells has worked and lived in Germany, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA. His business responsibilities and research have taken him to all corners of the world. In the process, Dr Wells has written over 50 cases on strategy and innovation and speaks regularly on the subject around the world. His work on strategic IQ focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of strategic failure, structural impediments to change, and human inertia. His wide ranging interests include strategic business model innovation, social strategy, responsible leadership, relevant learning and family capitalism.
