4 Profile Ewan Tuohy, Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences BSc For my placement, I worked as a Sports Scientist with the newly-formed Lucozade Ribena Suntory (LRS). My role involved working as a part of the Applied Research and Claims team within the heart of the R&D department, alongside the senior Sports Scientist on matters usually to do with Lucozade Sport. My role was very diverse, involving many different projects - ranging from new product development to internal education programmes. From day one, I realised there would never be a dull day at LRS with their modern ways of thinking and their Yatte Minahare (Go for it!) spirit! Working with LRS taught me so much in such a short space of time - I had a wealth of information to take back with me for my final year. Why choose Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences? If you want to turn a love of sport and a fascination with the human body into a career, a degree in Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences gives you an excellent start. With increasing public health awareness, political support for illness prevention and national interest in sporting excellence especially post the 2012 Olympics this is an inspiring and expanding area in which to work. Why choose Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences at Brunel? We are currently ranked number one in London for sportbased courses by The Complete University Guide We re proud of this, and of our cutting edge research academics who are one of the key reasons for our great reputation with our students. We have world-class sporting facilities, including a running track used by Usain Bolt, who told the BBC: Brunel is awesome! The University has really done great for us. We come here every summer, that s where we stay, and they really show us a lot of love. We get a lot of support from everybody there so thank you guys! Our great location in London, plus our strong links with sports personnel, organisations and institutions at local, regional, national and international levels, enables us to offer our students considerable opportunities for career progression. Opt for a sandwich course and you ll gain fantastic work experience on placement with one of our great partner organisations. Students have recently spent time at secondary and primary schools, Brunel Sports Centre, Christ s Hospital, Leeds City College, Sussex County Cricket Club, Hays Personnel, Featherstone Rovers, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Sport Impact, Fitlab, Northampton FC and Access Sport. As well as our Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences BSc course we also offer specialist programmes giving you the chance to explore and connect your interests. 4

13 Profile Melissa Courtney, Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences BSc I liked Brunel as soon as I arrived at the Open Day. It seemed extremely friendly and welcoming and I loved the atmosphere around campus. I knew Brunel was a very good sporting university and known for its success in athletics, so this attracted me to be a part of it. The free use of the sporting facilities at Brunel has been very useful, allowing me to train in the Indoor Athletics Track for my circuit and weight training, as well as the Outdoor Athletics Track, which is where the majority of my sessions take place all year round. How we teach You ll be taught in lectures, tutorials, workshops, practicals, computer-assisted sessions and seminars. Our academic staff are not only at the forefront of their professions but also appreciated by students for their friendliness and approachability. We re here to support you and help you make the most of your time with us. You will be actively involved in your own learning. We will help you to develop independent study skills through set reading tasks, student-led seminars, group work/presentations, laboratory work and self-testing. By the time you get to your final year, you will be fully prepared for writing your dissertation. Getting ready for work We work closely with our award-winning Professional Development Centre to offer a broad range of opportunities for students to enhance their employment prospects. We also host the Careers In Sport National Sports Roadshow each year, which is a great way to network with key employers here on campus. By the end of your time with us you ll be ready to focus on a sport-related career such as coaching, consultancy, fitness testing and training, sport development, sport management, teaching and youth work, or go on to higher education and research. Our graduates have found positions with the UK and regional Sports Councils, national governing bodies for sport, international organisations, sports clothing companies, professional sport clubs and local authorities. 13
