1 Christian Scherer: EVP-Head of Strategy & Future Programs Airbus Christian Scherer was appointed Executive Vice President Strategy and Future Programs in September He is in charge of defining Airbus' long-term strategic objectives in different areas such as analysis of the market environment and research of trends and evolutions, product policy and the development of future programs. He is also in charge of industrial strategy, international partnerships and cooperation programs. Mr. Scherer joined Airbus in 1984, becoming Vice President Contracts for Airbus North America (based in the USA), Vice President Leasing markets, Vice President Contracts and Pricing Worldwide and Deputy Head of Commercial in Toulouse. Born in Duisburg, Germany, Mr. Scherer holds an MBA Degree from the University of Ottawa in international marketing and graduated from the Paris Business School (ESCP). Nico Buchholz: EVP-Group Fleet Management Lufthansa In March 2001 Nico Buchholz joined Deutsche Lufthansa AG in Frankfurt. His responsibilities include strategic fleet planning, commercial and technical aircraft evaluation including engines, procurement of aircraft and engines, aircraft specification, commercial ownership / asset management and the marketing and sales and leases of used aircraft for all airlines and partners within the Lufthansa Group, thus managing a portfolio of close to 800 aircraft. He was responsible for initiating the institution of a dedicated Lufthansa A380 Entry-Into-Service group. His team played an influential part in the development of the Boeing 747-8, the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350. Mr. Buchholz is and was entrusted with the task of restructuring several fleets within the group. He also is a director in several Lufthansa affiliates besides being linked to the STAR Alliance fleet team. Mr. Buchholz, born in Hamburg, was initially employed in the import and export business. In 1982, he enrolled at the Berlin Technical University to study aeronautical engineering with the emphasis on aircraft design, flight operations and air traffic. He concluded his academic education with a Masters Degree in airport transport management at the Cranfield Institute of Technology in Bob Lange: VP-Marketing Airbus Bob Lange began his career as a Future Projects Engineer at British Aerospace Woodford after completing an Undergraduate Apprenticeship and an honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Bath. He joined Airbus in 1987 where he held Airline Marketing account responsibilities in North America and Asia before being appointed A330/A340 Product Manager where he worked on the launch of the A and A / Mr. Lange became A3XX Marketing Director in 1996, working with major airlines to define requirements for the cabin interior, managing consumer research and concept design. In 2001, following successful launch of the A380, he held a staff function planning New Product Communications within the Brand & Image team. In 2003 he was appointed Director Long Range Product Policy responsible for product development recommendations resulting in the launch of the A350 XWB. In 2005 Bob became Director of Cabin Strategy where he led a project to develop the new cabin vision for the A350 XWB. He moved back to Marketing in 2007 to lead the Aircraft Interiors Marketing team, covering all current and future Airbus cabins. Mr. Lange was recently appointed Vice President, Marketing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Matt Wilks: Managing Director-Product Marketing Boeing Photo not available Matt Wilks brings 20 years of aerospace experience to his current role as Managing Director of Product Marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. In this role, Mr. Wilks is responsible for demonstrating the value to the marketplace of Boeing s product offerings, working together with airlines on future needs and requirements, and understanding competitors products. He leads a team of 30 industry experts who work closely with Boeing customers. Mr. Wilks joined Boeing in March 2011 after three years at Hawker Beechcraft as Director of Engineering, leading a team of 150 engineers supporting production and future enhancements to three product lines. In prior roles at Boeing, Mr. Wilks was Chief Engineer for 787 Derivatives and held management positions on 787, Strategic Management, and Product Development. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from Cranfield University (UK) and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
2 Sam Cherry: Dir., Prog. Planning Dev. & Customer Requirements Bombardier Aerospace Sam Cherry is Director of Program Planning, Development & Customer Requirements for the Commercial Aircraft Division of Bombardier Aerospace. He has been with Bombardier Aerospace for 26 years. Mr. Cherry joined Short Brothers PLC in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as a design Engineer within future projects. Following acquisition of Shorts by Bombardier, he joined and became Manager of the newly formed Corporate Marketing department, responsible for Strategy, Business Development and Marketing. He moved to Montreal in 2001 to work in Product Line Strategy for Business Aircraft and in 2003 became the Business Aircraft representative within Strategy and Business Development at group level. Within this role, he acted as M136 (L85) Project Lead, overseeing the business case development up to Board approval. More recently, Mr. Cherry was part of the Learjet 85 leadership team acting as Program Director, German Base Group. João Alfredo Paiva, Director, Market Strategy - Commercial Aviation Embraer João Alfredo Paiva has been with Embraer since 1984 working in several areas within the commercial department, mainly in the ERJ 145 and Embraer 170/190 marketing activities. Currently, he is responsible for Market Strategy, including the Embraer Market Outlook. Mr. Paiva holds a Mechanical Engineering Degree, a Masters Degree in Air Transportation Management from Cranfield University, and an MBA from Fundação Getúlio Vargas In Sao Paulo. Mario Formica: VP-Marketing & Airline Studies Avions de Transport Regional Mario Formica leads the ATR team that is responsible for Airline and Product Marketing, Competition, and Strategic Marketing. He provides support services to sales strategies and activities for the ATR family of products. Mr. Formica began his career at Alenia Aeronautica Naples in 1984 as an airline analyst in the Marketing Department. He moved to ATR in 1989, and after spending four years in various positions in the Sales & Commercial Department, he was promoted to Director, Sales Engineering in Between 1995 and 1998, Mr. Formica was VP of the Technical Sales Division with direct involvement in major ATR sales campaigns, heading a multi-national AI(R) team. Mr. Formica holds a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and is a lecturer at the MBA Aerospace ESCT and Maître de Conférence at IAE Institut in Toulouse, in the Strategy Department. He has been a member of the Board of the European Regional Airline Association for three years. Robert Saia: VP-Next Generation Product Family Pratt & Whitney Robert Saia began his career with Pratt & Whitney in He was in charge of the P&W office in Toulouse for three years. While in Engineering, he was instrumental in establishing the Systems Integration structure currently employed at Pratt & Whitney for new program development. He led the Commercial Engines Marketing Group starting in He later headed the Propulsion Systems Analysis group responsible for all engine performance, operability and electronic digital controls. He joined Engine Alliance, a joint venture launched with General Electric, in October 2000 to develop and sell the GP7200 series for the Airbus A380 airplane family. He was Executive Vice President of the Engine Alliance and Vice President of P&W s GP7000 Program. In February 2006, he was appointed Vice President, Commercial Development Programs. Later that year, Bob was appointed Vice President, Next Generation Product Family. He holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southeastern Massachusetts University and a Masters degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
3 Sandrine Lacorre: LEAP Product Marketing Director CFM International Photo not available Sandrine Lacorre joined the Engineering Research & Technology Department of SNECMA in 2001 as an aerodynamic engineer, designing high pressure compressor blades. Christian Cornille: Chief Executive Officer Aerolia Christian Cornille was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Aerolia in January of Prior to this position, Mr. Cornille was Vice President, Business Development AIRBUS Center of Excellence Aerostructures (Supply chain, Power 8 Program & Zephyr project leader). From 2000 to 2006, he held the position of Vice President Industrial & Aerostructures at EADS Socata. Tony Morales: Global Marketing Director, Aerospace Alcoa Tony Morales is responsible for global marketing activities in Aerospace and Defense markets for Alcoa Global Rolled Products. In this role, he supports Alcoa rolling mills producing heat treated sheet, plate, and forged billet on two continents. His responsibilities include development and execution of business strategies to drive profitable growth by directing commercial activities and technology innovations that exceed customer needs. He joined Alcoa in 1979 as an Ingot Metallurgist in the Wire Rod & Bar Division. Beginning in 1990 he progressed through a series of Senior Application Engineering and Senior Account Manager roles in the Alcoa Sheet & Plate Division. In 1999 he joined Alcoa's aerospace team, becoming Aerospace Product Manager for all sheet and plate products supplied into aerospace and defense markets. He was named to his current position as Global Marketing Director, Aerospace & Defense, in January Mr. Morales holds a Materials Engineering Degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Business Administration Degree from University of Phoenix. Neil McManus: VP & Managing Director Spirt AeroSystems (Europe) Neil McManus joined Spirit AeroSystems in April 2006 as part of the acquisition of BAE Systems Aerostructures business unit in Prestwick, Scotland and Samlesbury, England. As an industrial trainee for BAE Systems, Mr. McManus received an Industrial Trainee Award in 1986 and moved on to become a graduate apprentice with the Military Aircraft Division. Following completion of his apprenticeship in 1990, he became Team Leader Manufacturing Systems. Following a role in Logistics and Business Support, Centre of Excellence and Operational Efficiency Improvement Secondments and senior positions in Business Strategy, Neil became Project Director for all Airbus work within the Aerostructures Business Unit. In January 2003, he was appointed to the position of Managing Director Aerostructures. Neil was a participant in BAE SYSTEMS Strategic Leadership Program and is a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. Mr. McManus is a graduate of Loughborough University of Science and Technology, where he gained a BSc Honours degree in Engineering Manufacturing as well as a Diploma in Industrial Studies. He is also a Director and Council Member of Aerospace, Defence & Security Group (ADS) and Chairman of ADS Scotland.
4 Derk-Jan van Heerden: General Manager Aircraft End-of-Life Solutions (AELS) Derk-Jan (DJ) van Heerden s complete history in the aviation sector has been around end-of-life aircraft. He graduated on this subject in 2005 from the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. For this work he was awarded the Best Graduate Award from the Dutch Royal Aeronautical Society. After a short period with KLM Engineering and Maintenance, where he managed the disassembly of a Boeing 747, he started AELS. Today, Mr. van Heerden and his team are assisting aircraft owners all over the world with their end-of-life decision. Next to this they execute the disassembly and dismantling of aircraft for high profile clients, such us KLM, Lufthansa, TNT, EADS and Iberia. Part of the solution AELS offers is assisting in all activities required to re-introduce the parts in the aviation sector, such as logistics, marketing and sales. In the short history already 28 aircraft were processed by the sustainable and green solutions of AELS. Recycling of materials is also offered to MRO and (suppliers to) OEM companies. George Burton: Director Counterpoint Market Intelligence Mr. Burton is a director and co-founder in 2004 of Counterpoint Market Intelligence Limited, which supplies market research reports and consultancy in aerospace and related markets. The company specializes in analysis principally of markets at the tier 1 and tier 2 supplier level. Formerly, Mr. Burton was strategic planning and business development director of Westland Aerospace and then GKN Aerospace. Sean Flannery: EVP Technical & GM, GECAS Ltd. GE Capital Aviation Services Sean Flannery is the EVP Technical for GECAS. In his role as EVP Technical Sean is responsible for developing and implementing technical policy related to the GECAS aircraft and engine portfolio and managing a global technical team. He is also General Manager of GECAS Ltd and has overall responsibility for operations at GECAS Ltd in Shannon, Ireland. Mr. Flannery has 20-plus years experience in commercial aviation leasing and has held various roles within Technical Operations. Prior to his appointment as EVP Technical and General Manager, he held the position of General Manger of GECAS AMS (formerly The Memphis Group). Mr. Flannery has also held various positions within the GECAS Technical Organization including, SVP Technical Operations and VP Technical. Mr. Flannery holds a M.Sc. in Aviation Management from Cranfield University. Charles Armitage: Head of European Aerospace & Defense Equity Research UBS Charles Armitage is the Head of European Aerospace & Defense Equity Research for UBS, which serves private, institutional and corporate clients worldwide, as well as retail clients in Switzerland. Before joining UBS, Mr. Armitage was a London-based memeber of the Charles River Associates' Aerospace & Defense Practice. Prior to joining Charles River Associates, he was a senior director with Merrill Lynch and head of their European Aerospace & Defence equity research team. In this role, he analyzed the sector for investors with specific focus on BAE Systems, Cobham, EADS, Finmeccanica, Meggitt, QinetiQ, Rolls-Royce, Smiths, Thales, Ultra, and VT Group. Before that, he was an equity analyst with Putnam Investments. Mr. Armitage is a Rolls-Royce-trained engineer, and his key areas of expertise are enterprise valuation, financial forecasting, sector dynamics, and sensitivity and scenario analysis. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Bristol Marlborough College.
5 Andrew Gordon: Director-Strategic Marketing & Analysis Airbus Andrew Gordon moved to Airbus headquarters in Toulouse in 2001 and today he is Director Strategic Communications and Analysis. As part of this role, Mr. Gordon is responsible for facilitating the production of the Airbus Global Market Forecast, which details future demand for all civil aircraft of 50 seats or more. He is also accountable for analysis and forecasting of products as diverse as business jets, regional aircraft and military derivatives. Prior to this appointment he worked for British Aerospace Airbus as part of the Forecasting & Market Evaluation Team, where he was involved in providing analysis for many of the market and product-related decisions including the A380 project. In 2001, at the creation of Airbus as a single entity, Mr. Gordon moved to Toulouse, to work directly for Airbus in the Market Forecasting & Research Group, now part of the Strategy and Co-operation team. Mr. Gordon began his career with BAE/Airbus in 1991 and prior to that he worked for one of the United Kingdom's largest banks. He has a Master's Degree in Marketing from the University of the West England. James R. Billing: Managing Director-Market Analysis Boeing James Billing is a member of Boeing s Commercial Airplane Marketing team and leads the Market Analysis group. His organization is responsible for assessing market conditions in the airline industry, determining the short-term and long-term requirements for airplanes and services, and for tracking emerging trends in airline strategies and business models that will drive future demand for aviation products and services. The Market Analysis group prepares Boeing s Current Market Outlook and World Air Cargo Forecast, which forecast air travel and air cargo growth and airline airplane requirements. During his career at Boeing, Mr. Billing has also been engaged in airplane financing, value analysis, product development projects, and sales support. Marc Le Dilosquer: Director-Market Analysis MTU Aero Engines Marc Le Dilosquer is Director, Market Analysis at MTU Aero Engines in Munich where he leads a team of market analysts, monitoring civil and military engine markets and developing market forecasts for MTU s strategic planning and business development. Prior to Joining MTU, he was an aircraft performance engineer at Rolls-Royce with a focus on the analysis of Boeing 747/767 variants and their derivatives. He also held positions within the Product Marketing team of Fairchild Dornier. He holds an Aerospace Engineering Degree from ENSICA in Toulouse, and a PhD in Thermal Power from Cranfield University. Richard Evans: Head of Market Analysis Rolls-Royce Richard Evans began his career at Rolls-Royce in 1987, working in the Material Planning department. After working in various roles within the Master Scheduling and Inventory Management areas, Mr. Evans started work as a Market Analyst in the Civil Engine Business. In 2000 he was convocated to apply his experience, gained in the procurement area, to the program management of the A400M. The new military transport aircraft for the air forces of Europe. In 1998 he was named Procurement Director for Alstom in Madrid, responsible for all purchasing activities of the Painting Systems Division in Spain. In 2000 he joined Gamesa Aeronautica (today Aernnova), as Program Director for the CRJ700 & 900 aircraft. In 2004 he returns to EADS CASA, Madrid (Airbus Military) as Business Director for the KC45 Tanker Program, where he is deployed in 2005 to EADS North America. In June 2011 he returned to Airbus Military Spain where he joined Customer Services as Head of MSO and Business Transformation. Mr. Rivera holds a Bachelors Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Madrid University, and an MBA from the Instituto de Empresa, Madrid. Guillaume de Ranieri: Principal McKinsey & Company Guillaume de Ranieri is the leader of the European Lean R&D effort in McKinsey s Paris office. He is a member of the European High Tech practice as well as of the Aerospace and Defence practice. Mr. Ranieri has served one European satellite manufacturer continuously since 2002 on topics such as the turnaround of the Telecom satellites business including a cost reduction of satellites by 30 percent; improvement of the Assembly Integration and Test using lean manufacturing techniques, strategy of the Equipment business, and reorganisation of this business; set up of the company-wide improvement plan; optimisation of the supply chain, optimisation of the human resources forecasting and management processes, definition of the commercial strategy for Telecom satellites; and optimisation of the bidding process. He has served one European Launchers manufacturer on procurement cost optimisation and the redefinition of the business model. He also also served other Aerospace and Defense clients on strategy, organisation and operational improvement. 7 Speaker Biographies Ben Jaques: Commercial Manager IBA Group Ben Jaques joined IBA after a decade in aviation. He began his career with BMI in 2000 in a customer servicefocused role at its London Gatwick ground handling operation. Mr. Jaques worked his way through the ground handling hierarchy, moving into dispatch and then operations, before leaving the company in 2006 to join Air Partner. The next three years were spent working his way up through its Commercial and Leasing teams before being promoted to Group Quality Manager. This role saw him managing Air Partner s due diligence regarding airlines, utilizing his training in QMS and SMS development with IATA. In 2010, Mr. Jaques was delighted to accept a fresh challenge, becoming IBA s Commercial Manager, bringing not only his good reputation, but also a sound sales knowledge and industry understanding to the consultancy. Robert Thomson: Partner Roland Berger Strategy Consultants Robert Thomson is a Partner in Roland Berger's Aerospace & Defence competence center, based in London. He has extensive consulting experience, encompassing strategy and operational improvement assignments for leading airlines, aerospace companies and governments in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. Prior to joining Roland Berger, Mr. Thomson worked as an investment analyst in the City of London and an engineer at Rolls-Royce. He holds an MBA with Distinction from the London Business School and a First Class Engineering degree from Cambridge University, where he was elected to the Sir Henry Royce scholarship. Jonas Murby: Principal ICF SH&E Jonas Murby is a Principal based in ICF SH&E's office in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has eleven years of experience in the aerospace industry, with five years of consulting experience at ICF SH&E. His areas of expertise include component asset management, airline purchasing behavior, customer segmentation and market analysis. Prior to joining ICF SH&E, he most recently served as Industrial Marketing Director at SAS Component where he focused on strategic sales, business development and the negotiation of major partnership agreements. Previous roles at SAS included building the market analysis function and managing the implementation of SAS Component's Material Supply Program. Mr. Murby holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. Prior to joining AirBusiness Academy, Mr. Gibson worked in financial analysis and risk management with Citibank, where he was responsible for portfolio forecasting and risk analysis, management control, capacity planning and budgeting. He also founded management consulting firms in San Francisco and France. Mr. Gibson is a guest lecturer at the HEC Paris and Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Toulouse Aviation MBA programs. 8 Joanna Speed: Managing Director-Conferences SpeedNews When Gil and Ann Speed launched the aviation industry s most innovative newsletter in 1979, they recruited their two young daughters for the production staff. Like many children of company founders, Ms. Speed delayed joining the family business. However, a few years after college, she acquiesced, putting to use her degree from Cal Poly State University and her acumen for business and marketing.
