1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ford's approval ratings unshaken by international ridicule Majority agree with decision to strip his powers, NOVEMBER 20 th, 2013 In a random sampling of public opinion taken among 1049 Toronto voters after the week when he was featured on all the late night talk shows and a day after his duties were curtailed by council, just more than 4 in 10 approve of the job Rob Ford is doing as mayor (42%), and this is essentially unchanged from two weeks ago, after an equally controversial week capped by an admission he had smoked crack cocaine (44%). Ford's popularity is especially high among the least wealthy (less than $20K 49%, $20K to $40K 52%), males (49%), in York/Etobicoke (57%), the least educated (55%), Catholics (54%), those with children (49%) and those whose ethnic background is from somewhere other than the British Isles. Six in ten approve of decision to strip mayor of power Close to two thirds approve council's decision to strip Mayor Ford of most of his budget, staff and authority and give it to Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly (60%). One third disapprove (34%) and one twentieth have no opinion (5%). Those who don't approve are typical Ford supporters, (young, male, low income, less educated, suburbs) described in more detail below. Approval high for Deputy Mayor, also Olivia Chow Two thirds approve of the job Norm Kelly is doing as Deputy Mayor (65%), 6 in 10 approve of Olivia Chow (59%), about one half approve of John Tory (52%) and Karen Stintz (47%) while just one third approve of Doug Ford (36%). Minority want a civic election now Just fewer than one half think a municipal election should be held now (44%), and this is especially the case among the youngest (53%), mid income groups ($40K to $60K 53%) in the downtown and North York (47% each). Rob Ford supporters are less likely to support an election (39%) than are those who disapprove of the mayor (47%). One half want referendum on Rob Ford One half of Torontonians (49%) want a referendum on whether Rob Ford should remain in office (49%) while just fewer do not think this (47%). Rob Ford supporters are less likely to want a referendum (37%) than are those who disapprove of the mayor (59%). 1 MEDIA INQUIRIES: HIGHLIGHTS: Just more than 4 in 10 approve of the job Rob Ford is doing as mayor (42%), and this is essentially unchanged from two weeks ago. 2 Ford seen best for budget, Chow best for vision In a rating of candidate attributes, Rob Ford is seen to best able to handle the city budget (34%), compared to Olivia Chow (28%), John Tory (22%) or Karen Stintz (8%). Chow is seen to have the best vision for the city (34% to 30% for Rob Ford, 21% for John Tory and 9% for Karen Stintz). Despite his success in uniting council against him, Olivia Chow is seen to be better able to make councillors work together (33%) than Rob Ford (20%). John Tory is seen to be best at this by a quarter (26%), while a tenth choose Stintz (8%). Olivia Chow is seen as the candidate most likely to leave the city better than she found it (34%), followed by Rob Ford (31%), John Tory (21%) and Karen Stintz (8%). Six in ten still want Ford to resign Six in ten Toronto voters want Rob Ford to resign (60%) and this hasn't changed in two weeks (61%). More than a quarter of those who voted for him think resignation is a good idea (28%). Sharp increase in those who think mayor has substance abuse problem Close to 7 in 10 believe Mayor Ford has a substance abuse problem (69%), well up from just more than half two weeks ago (54%). Just fewer think he should take a leave of absence to deal with substance abuse problems (64%). Of note, more than a third of those who support Rob Ford agree he has a problem (36%) and should deal with it (37%). One third will vote for Ford in 2014 One third of Toronto voters say they will vote for Rob Ford in 2014 (33%), and this percentage barely increases if it is posited that the mayor goes to rehab first (34%). This group may be considered to be the bedrock of Ford Nation, and they are characteristically mid aged (45 to 54 40%), male (43%), in mid to higher income groups ($80K to $100K 46%), in Etobicoke/York (46%), drivers (41%), those with some college or university (45%), Catholics (45%), non British Europeans (46%) and non Europeans (44%) and those with children (42%). Of note, one tenth of Rob Ford's supporters will not vote for him next year (10%). One third think Rob Ford is good for Toronto One third of Torontonians think Rob Ford is good for Toronto (35%), and this group is essentially the same as the core supporters described previously. Six in ten think he is bad for Toronto (61%) and very few don't have an opinion (4%). 3 Just one fifth support Ford for PM One fifth of Torontonians say they would support Rob Ford for Prime Minister, an ambition he has espoused (19%). Three quarters would not (75%) and one twentieth have no opinion (5%). Those who support this ambition are young (29%), male (23%), low income (32%), in Etobicoke/York (30%), non Christians (28%), non Europeans (29%) and Ford supporters (43%). Of note, most Ford supporters would not support him for Prime Minister (45%). What we can see from this is that, to his core supporters, the true citizens of Ford Nation, who comprise about one third of the voters in Toronto, Rob Ford is a viable candidate for mayor. Nothing more he can do will surprise them or put them off. They've seen the worst there is, and they still stand by their man," said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff.
