1 In the name of God Course plan Iran University of medical Sciences Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Developing and revising by Dr. Alice Khachian Course title Department Degree Credits Contact time Course Faculty Fundamental nursing (theory and practical Syllabus) Medical surgical nursing Bachelor of Nursing 4 points 51 hours theory 34 hours laboratory Course Description Fundamental nursing is a basic course in nursing and its aim is to prepare nursing students for caring patients with health problems, to introduce basic concepts related to nursing care, to practice skills for patients caring (technical and non-technical, with mannequins and roleplaying) and to learn using critical thinking and nursing process for providing care and promoting health. Course detail This course contains two parts: theory and practice. Main Aim To familiarize nursing students with basic concepts related to patient care according to nursing process and to acquire essential competencies for implementing nursing procedures with an emphasize on professional rules and ethical considerations 1
2 Objectives for theory syllabus Knowledge domain 1- explain health and disease concepts and to describe activities for health promotion and disease prevention. 2- explain basic human needs (safety, nutrition, elimination, sleep, rest and pain relief). 3- illustrate nursing profession and its activities. 4- explain nursing process (assessment, goals, ND s ). 5- describe essential activities for infection control. 6- explain fluid and electrolytes balance. 7- illustrate personal hygiene needs of patients. 8- explain motion and side effects of immobilization. 9- identify solutions, drugs and correct medication administration principles. 10- describe perioperative care. 11- explain principles for patients' admission, transfer and discharge. 12- illustrate correct principles for nursing notes documentation. 13- describe patient education methods and its general rules. 14- familiarize with some nursing regulations and ethics. Psychomotor domain 1- develop nursing care plan according to nursing process (assessment, goals, ND s ) for a patient. 2- practice correct principles for nursing notes documentation. 2
3 3- exemplify the concepts of fluid and electrolyte balance calculations. 4- conduct medical calculations correctly. 5- distinguish drug classes. 6- identify hospitalized patients' basic needs. 7- identify differences in pre- and post-operative care. Affective domain 1- study about represented patient histories. 2- provide her/his recommendation about patient care. 3- consider patient as a human with legal and ethical rights. 4- provide patient care honestly. 5- follow patients' care and treatment plans. Objectives for laboratory syllabus Psychomotor domain 1- perform infection prevention techniques (hand hygiene, gloving ) and to take care from isolated patients. 2- change patient position and to transfer them correctly. 3- demonstrate personal hygiene skills (bath, oral and dental care ). 4- control and document vital signs. 5- demonstrate cold and heat therapy. 6- meet patients nutritional needs. 3
4 7- demonstrate ways for meeting patients' elimination needs, and changing, irrigating and attaching colostomy bag. 8- demonstrate ways for meeting patients' urinary excretion needs and urinary catheterization. 9- perform techniques for opening sterile packs and maintaining sterile field. 10- show principles and procedures for oxygen therapy. 11- perform nose, mouth and tracheostomy suction. 12- demonstrate wound care procedures (changing wound dress, removing sutures). 13- do several types of bandages. 14- implement several types of drugs administration (oral; ointment; suppository; eye, ear and nose drops; and intramuscular, intravenous, sub dermal and intradermal injection) 15- calculate medications for administration. 16- show ways for taking care of corpse. 17- practice to write nursing notes. Instructional strategies For achieving educational aims, following methods will be used: Class discussion, lecture, multimedia, demonstration, role-playing, collaborative group work and laboratory practice (practice on mannequins) Teaching equipment For teaching computer, overhead, video projector, model, mannequins, supplies for demonstrating procedures and white board will be used. Students activities It is expected that students: 1- acquire basic scientific knowledge necessary for learning desired content. 2- develop his/her knowledge through library resources and use research findings for improving quality of patient education. 4
5 3- prepare assignments by using recent scientific resources. 4- take their own learning responsibilities and pursue educational plans according to faculties' guidance. 5- take apart in classes and nursing skills lab regularly and participate in class discussions actively. 6- present their theoretical and practical assignments on due dates. 7- study terms in reference books prior to each session. 8- should participate in midterm exams. If a student has an unauthorized absence, zero will be considered and if he/she has excused absence, he/she should inform faculty in a week for repeating exam, otherwise zero will be considered. 9- should not absence more than 4/17 hours of the course. If absence is more than permissible level: A) in unauthorized absence, zero will be considered. B) in excused absence the course will be deleted. Assignment It is expected that students: 1- for theoretical assignment: to prepare a paper about one of the theoretical concepts in fundamental nursing course (less than 2 pages) 2- for practical assignment: to complete vital sign chart and intake-output form.
