3 MEDIA GUIDE - TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS DR PARIS SG VS GIRONDINS, THE SUMMIT IN LIBREVILLE The 18 th Trophée des Champions will pit the French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain against reigning Coupe de France winners FC Girondins de Bordeaux in Libreville on 3 August. This official match will not only award the first silverware of the new French season, but also pay homage to the inexhaustible well of international talent that is African football. The 2013/14 French football season will begin in Gabon! For the fifth consecutive year, the Trophée des Champions is heading overseas. After Montreal, Tunis, Tangiers and New York, the first official match of the season between the defending French Ligue 1 champion and the winner of the Coupe de France will be held on 3 August at the Friendship Stadium in Libreville. More than just a prestigious match of football, this match sees the winner awarded with one of the four domestic trophies on offer in France each season. With two wins each in this competition's rich history, both Paris SG and Les Girondins de Bordeaux will be looking for a third triumph to start the new campaign in the best possible way. Inaugurated in November 2011 and boasting a maximum capacity of 40,000, Libreville's Friendship Stadium played host to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations that was co-hosted between Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. During the tournament, the Friendship Stadium hosted matches from Group C, a quarter-final, a semi-final and the final. As well as the AFCON, the Gabon national team has also played friendly matches against Brazil and Portugal in the stadium. Since 2009, when FC Girondins de Bordeaux played EA Guingamp in Montreal, the exportation of the Trophée des Champions has played a major role in the international development of the Ligue 1. Now, for the first time, the LFP's Administrative Council, has chosen to organise the match in sub- Saharan Africa, a region that has seen Ligue 1's notoriety grow rapidly in recent seasons. The choice of venue is also a tribute to a region that has been a rich and constant source of incredible footballing talents that have entertained, thrilled and inspired with French clubs. The Ligue 1 was the best represented championship at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2010, 2012 and 2013, and it boasts a long history with Africa. From Salif Keita to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, via Roger Milla, George Weah and Didier Drogba, the French Ligue 1 has provided the setting for so many players from Africa to display the full potential of their talents. During the 2012/13 season, the Ligue 1 had no less than 111 African players. UNICEF HONOURED For the fourth consecutive year, the Trophée des Champions will be played under the UNICEF banner. To celebrate the occasion, the Paris Saint-Germain and FC Girondins de Bordeaux players will enter the field of play holding the hands of African children selected by UNICEF and wearing the UNICEF colours, which will be visible around the ground. Part of the profits from the match will be donated to the charity that works to help children in need across the African continent.

4 LIGUE 1 AND THE GABON CONNECTION From Daniel Cousin to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, there have always existed strong links between the Ligue 1 and Gabonese football. Let's take a closer look at the ties that bind ahead of the 2013 Trophée des Champions to take place in Libreville on 3 August. The 18 th edition of the Trophée des Champions will take place on Saturday 3 August in Libreville, Gabon, at the Friendship Stadium that hosted the final of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Since 2009, the match that pits the Ligue 1 champions against the winner of the Coupe de France has been played overseas. This is the third time, after Tunis in 2010 and Tangiers in 2011, that it will be played in Africa, but the first time in sub-saharan Africa, where the Ligue 1 enjoys a large and passionate following. SEVEN GABONESE PLAYERS IN LIGUE 1 IN 2012/2013 Ligue 1 was the best represented championship at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and boasts a long and rich history with Africa. Since 1970, from Salif Keita to El Hadji Diouf, passing by George Weah, Abedi Pelé and Victor Ikpeba, no less than 12 African Players of the Year won their awards while plying their trade in France. During the 2012/13 campaign, no less than 111 Africans played in Ligue 1, including seven from Gabon. The second top scorer in the competition, with 19 goals and fourth on the assists charts with eight offerings, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shone in the green shirt of AS Saint- Etienne. With FC Girondins de Bordeaux, André Biyogo Poko won the Coupe de France. On the Côte d Azur, Lloyd Palun qualified for the Europa League with the OGC Nice. In Brittany, Bruno Ecuele Manga and Mario Lemina played together at FC Lorient while Didier Ovono defended the colours of FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. Gabon was also well represented in Ligue 2, by Fabrice Do Marcolino (Stade Lavallois), Rémy Ebanega and Henry Ndong (AJ Auxerre), Johan Obiang (LB Châteauroux) and Yrondu Musavu-King (SM Caen). SHIVA N ZIGOU : YOUNGEST GOAL SCORER IN AFCON HISTORY All these players form part of a long and illustrious tradition. Since the 1990s, 17 Gabonese players have graced Ligue 1 or Ligue 2. From cycling to athletics and taekwondo, the country is hosting a series of international events in With a surface area of 267,667km², Gabon has a population of 1.6 million, more than a third of which reside in Libreville, the country's leading city ahead of Port-Gentil, Franceville and Oyem. With tropical rainforest covering 88% of the country and boasting 800 kilometres of Atlantic Ocean coastline, Gabon has been hosting more and more international sporting events in recent years. In 2006, the African Football Confederation named Gabon as co-host of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) along with Equatorial Guinea, one of three neighbouring countries along with Cameroun and the DR Congo. The 28th edition of the tournament featured the remarkable triumph of Zambia, while Gabon, led by coach Gernot Rohr, made it all the way to the quarter-finals of the competition. The competition's organisation was an overwhelming success, lauded by the sport's governing bodies and world media alike. Since 2006, Gabon hosts the annual Tropicale Amissa Bongo, the continents premier cycling race. It is the only African cycling event with a 2.1 class ranking and is recognised on the UCI calendar. Each year the event attracts top class professional teams from around the globe that race against national teams from across the African continent, under the watchful eye of event patron Bernard Hinault. In January, Frenchman Yohann Gène won the event riding for the Europcar team alongside Pierre Rolland. The fact that professionals and amateurs race side by side also opened a pathway for African cyclists to go on and join professional outfits. The story of sport in Gabon is a labour of love, reinforced by the growing number of Gabonese athletes that now ply their trade overseas. At the London Olympic Games in 2012 the Gabon team featured 23 athletes in five disciplines (athletics, judo, taekwondo, boxing and football). Gabon won their first ever Olympic medal when Anthony Obame picked up silver in Taekwondo. Another athlete in the team, sprinter Ruddy Zang-Milama, African 100m champion in 2012 and third at the World Indoors in 2010, proudly carried the flag at the opening ceremony. African U23 champions in 2011, it was a first Olympics appearance for the country's footballers. Led by Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon finished third in their group with a loss (2-0 to Mexico) and two draws (1-1 with Switzerland with a goal to Aubameyang and a scoreless draw with Korea Republic). Gabon has developed a professional football championship and also boasts a youth academy in Libreville, opened by the Samuel Eto o Foundation. From the age of 11, the best young Gabonese players receive free schooling and football training. Libreville will also soon play host to the inaugural Gabon International Marathon from 30 November to 1 December. To be held in the centre of Libreville, the meeting will conduct a marathon, a half marathon, and 10,000m race as well as races for children. This first edition will raise awareness for the environment with all participants and organisers signing an ecological charter to respect their natural surroundings. It's the chance to remember that with 5.2 million hectares of rich and unexploited land, Gabon boasts a biodiversity unique in Africa as well as 50,000 forest elephants (around half the world's population of the species).
