(2011): Natural Resource and Environmental Economics, 4 th ed., Harlow (Pearson) Course Organization The course follows a three-tier structure, combing highly interactive lectures with seminarstyle presentations and a final discussion with a CSR representative of a major TNC: During the first weeks of the semester until November 5, we will work intensively in the class on foundational inputs and in-class case discussions. This part follows primarily a highly interactive lecture-style approach. Based on the recommended readings and preparation of case studies, continuing active class participation throughout the term is expected. The second element of the course is an assignment: Students work in teams of four team members to learn, analyze and understand how the challenges of corporate responsibility and sustainability management are addressed in real-world settings. Each team has to prepare a presentation of max. 20 minutes (5 minutes per student) and a corresponding handout (executive summary) for the fellow students of max. 12 pages (3 pages per team member). We then have time for discussion. Introduction and assignment of topics will take place on Sept 30 (first lecture). Deadline for delivery of the papers (executive summary) and of presentations to juergen.volkert@hspforzheim.de is November 26, The third element is a discussion with Dr. Michael Fürst, Senior Manager of CR Strategy and Innovation at Novartis AG. Groups of four students will prepare for the discussion with Dr. Michael Fürst (Novartis) and establish a Twopager summary of their analysis and questions. Deadline for 2pagers as preparation for the discussion is January 2, Grading Paper (executive summary) (25 %) Presentation and activity in class discussions (15 %) Preparation of and engagement in TNC s CSR senior manager workshop (20 %) Oral exam (40 %) 2
3 Course Contributions to the MBA Program Goals / Learning Outcomes Program Goal /Learning Outcome 1. Knowledge of business functions and processes as well as methods and models Through their master thesis, students demonstrate their well-founded knowledge of business functions and processes as well as of the relevant tools. 2. Analytical competence, critical thinking and creative problem solving Students demonstrate analytical competence and problem solving skills. Leadership and team competence Students demonstrate social competence of being able to co-operate effectively in a team in order to achieve their aims. 3.2 Students demonstrate that they possess leadership competencies required for leading complex projects. 4. Mastery of challenges of global and European integration Students demonstrate that they are able to examine and assess the challenges of European and global integration. They also demonstrate that they are able to recognize and assess intercultural challenges and make suggestions how to deal with them effectively. 5. Mastery of the challenges of global sustainability Students have basic knowledge of sustainability and are able to examine issues of global sustainability and their causes as well as develop strategies for sustainability. 6. Innovation management 7.1 Students are able to identify innovation potential for a given case and develop complex technological strategies. Communication skills Students demonstrate that they are able to express complex matters on scientific basis. 7.2 Students demonstrate their oral communication skills. 8. Ethical awareness Students are able to develop strategies for solutions and communication based on company ethics and are able to apply them to typical decision making problems Course Contributions to Learning Outcome Challenges of sustainability problems for business and management, responsibilities of government and business, sustainable business strategies. Corporate ethics and sustainability tools and techniques concerning major potentials and challenges. Analysis and Assessment of the challenges of ethical conflicts, social and environmental sustainability and of appropriate strategies of government, companies and stakeholder groups. Organize work of project team (agree on contents and structure, allocate jobs, timemanagement). Define roles in presenting results. Ability to analyze the causes and consequences of sustainable development problems and value conflicts in the global integration process (global public goods, e.g. climate). Global governance approaches, contribution and limits of corporate sustainability strategies. Students understand the inter-generational and intra-generational dimensions of sustainable development. Students know and are able to evaluate government policy options for sustainable development and their implications for business. Analysis of global value conflicts, conceptualization and discussion of effective solutions and strategies of diverse actors. Understanding of the importance of innovation and technological progress as a key element of sustainability strategies (efficient use of resources & social innovations) for which the ability to implement new solutions play a vital role. Reflection and discussion of ethical concepts and sustsinability issues as well as their relation and application to CSR, sustainability and business issues. Knowledge and understanding of ethical foundations related to resulting potentials and conflicts of sustainable development in a global context. Awareness of responsibility of government as well as of companies and management. Assessment Assignment: Students apply their knowledge to assess CR and sustainable business strategies of specific industries and companies. Students work in teams and present their results in the final sessions of the course. Discussion with corporate CSR manager and Interactive analysis of developments and challenges in class; in-depth analysis, selected cases, including a written assignment.
