1 1 Information Technology Management Fall 2015 Instructor: Dr. Nancy Zeliff Professor Office: CH Phone: Office hours: M 11 am-3 pm; TR 9:30-10:30 am; W 11 am-12 pm; others by appointment CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course provides an overview of contemporary information system components and their uses in modern organizations. It is presented from a management perspective that includes technology, people, and processes. The course examines the evolution of information and how it is managed to add value to organizations. The modern information systems leader is viewed as a change agent who facilitates the creation of relationships, processes, products, and services to achieve organizational goals. Bring your text and laptop to each class. OBJECTIVES: Understand the role of information technology in optimizing performance. (1) Describe the various types of information systems and how they interact, process data, and add value to organizations. (2, 9) Evaluate the attributes, benefits, and risks of service-based and cloud computing infrastructures. (2, 12) Explain an organizations need for business intelligence and the value of data, text, and web mining and DSSs. (3) Recognize IS vulnerabilities and key methods of defending information systems including business continuity and disaster recovery methods. (5) Describe the growing role of e-commerce, mobile computing, mobile intelligence, social media, sustainability, collaboration, and business process management in today s business organizations. (1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 13) Describe enterprise information systems including SCM, ERP, knowledge management, and CRM. (10) Explain the value of aligning IT and business strategy and the complexities and choices of information systems acquisition. (12) Describe IT-business trends. (14) Generate data visualizations to analyze a data set (11) Use presentation software and online collaborative tools to understand the value of successful synchronous and asynchronous communications between business professionals.

2 2 DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS: Students in this course who need disability accommodations/modifications should present a copy of their official Northwest accommodation letter from the LAP/S Committee to the instructor during private office hours as early in the term as possible. Additional information can be found online at ATTENDANCE POLICY Daily attendance is required. Roll will be taken each class period and attendance granted when you stay for the entire class period. If you must miss class because of any reason, absences are excused only when the instructor is contacted BEFORE class begins. Exams and assignments can be made up ONLY with an excused absence. Written documentation for absences due to University-sponsored events and other excused absences must be provided upon instructor s request and discretion. Make-up assessments and assignments must be completed by deadlines set by the instructor. PARTICIPATION Class start promptly at 8 am. Classes will consist of a lecture/discussion format for the introduction of the terms and concepts. The class time will also be used to reinforce learning and to demonstrate that knowledge through activities, discussion, case studies and outside articles. Throughout the course, students are expected to participate in class with a professional demeanor. A professional demeanor for a graduate student should include a positive attitude toward learning and each other, a genuine desire to learn the subject matter and obvious efforts in that direction, punctuality, dependability, and responsibility in individual and group work, contributions and leadership as needed and appropriate. All team members will assess team and group participation and their assessment will be taken into consideration when individual grades are posted for any group projects. DIGITAL DEVICE POLICY Cell phones, ipods, tablets, and other digital devices are to be turned off and put away during class. There will be exceptions to this when a mobile device can be used to aid instruction and research. As graduate students, I respect your ability to know when it's appropriate and when it's not. However, having a digital device visible during an exam will result in a 0 for the exam. Use of a digital device during an exam will result in a charge of Academic Dishonesty. TOBACCO-FREE CAMPUS Northwest is a tobacco-free campus. Chewing tobacco is not allowed in classrooms. Students using tobacco of any type during class will be asked to stop and leave class to discard of the product and cups, bottles, etc. Use a professional demeanor in your messages to me, addressing me as Dr. Zeliff, which is my preference. Include 623 in your subject line.

3 3 EVALUATION & GRADING: Quizzes (5 over text; 1 over ethical research practices) pts. Class activities, individual/group pts. Exam pts. Individual Data Viz pts. Group case presentations pts. Estimated Total Points pts. Final grades will be based on overall percentages with 90% for an A, 80% for a B, 70% for a C, 60% for a D, and below 60% for a F. Exam A comprehensive final exam will be given during the regularly scheduled final exam time. The exam will have essay questions. A study guide to facilitate your preparation for this exam will be provided during the last week of classes. Class Activities Class activities will take place during class as students/groups will take turns presenting current information, create spreadsheets for decision analysis, work together in teaming activities and take pop quizzes. Students must be in class to earn points for these activities. Individual Data Viz Assignments There will be one individual data visualization assignment. Details on this assignment will be provided in the course web site. Group Case Presentations Each student will be assigned to a group and the group will be assigned three business cases to study, research, and present to the rest of the class. Tests and Assignments: Exams and assignments can be made up ONLY with an excused absence. Written documentation for absences due to University-sponsored events and other excused absences must be provided upon instructor s request and discretion. Make-up assessments and assignments must be completed by deadlines set by the instructor. Any other absence will be considered unexcused. You must arrive on time in order to take quizzes at the beginning of class. Once the password for the quiz or exam is written on the board, time begins for the quiz. If you arrive late and begin the assessment late, you will have an abbreviated time to take the assessment. Assignments are due on the date shown on the class website. No exceptions or negotiations will be made. Late submission of assignments is not acceptable and will receive zero (0) points. Students who miss class with an unexcused absence may not earn points for inclass assignments.

4 4 Academic Honesty: Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity free from fraud and deception and is an educational objective of this institution. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: cheating, plagiarizing, fabricating of information or citations, facilitating acts of academic dishonesty by others, having unauthorized possession of examinations, submitting work of another person or work previously used without informing the instructor, or tampering with the academic work of other students. Further clarifications and details may be provided at the beginning of each course if the instructor chooses. For current rules and clarifications refer to the current catalog for the University policy, which will be strictly enforced in this class.
