3 Understanding the Engineering Labour Market Numerous organizations and researchers are reporting that over the next several years, there will be skill shortage of engineers. Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME): 26% of their members reported current shortages in engineers and R&D technicians 35% expect to face shortages over next five years Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, Management Issues Survey May 12, 2014

5 What is the nature of the skills shortage? Supply-Demand Gaps Chronic shortfall between the demand for experienced engineers and the current and projected supply. What is causing this chronic imbalance between demand and supply for experienced engineers? Four demand drivers: 1. Increasing technology intensiveness of the economy. 2. Increase in capital spending. 3. Globalization: export demand for Canadian engineering 4. Replacement demand Supply side: Systemic shortage of opportunities for Junior Engineers leads to a long-term and persistent under-supply of experienced engineers. 94 % engineering grads find work within 2 years but only % go into engineering specific jobs.

6 The 3 Step Process to Finding a Job 1. Getting your application through the screening process Researching the Company and industry Sector Decoding the Job Ad 2. Getting the Interview Tailoring your Cover Letter and Resume 3. Getting the Job offer Being prepared for the Interview

7 Researching the Company and Industry Sector Conducting background research on a company and industry sector are critical. Review the company website and websites of organizations affiliated to the industry sector in order to: o Familiarize yourself with common industry terminology o Understand the clientele of the company you wish to pursue o Identify projects the company is or has been involved in o Note technologies, software applications, and regulations that are commonly used by the company/industry sector Connect with your network in order to : o Build potential relationships with people already in the profession o Obtain guidance from subject matter experts in the industry o Understand the nature of roles and responsibilities in the industry Read articles and blogs on topics related to the company and/or sector to be aware of any shifting trends or developments in the industry

8 Decoding the Job Ad A job advertisement provides a great deal of upfront information but understanding how to apply the information is key. When reviewing a job advertisement, take note of any key words or phrases being used in the posting. How does your personal, professional and/or educational experience relate to these key phrases? What adjectives are being used to describe the skill set they are looking for? How will you utilize these adjectives in your CV? What does the language say about the organization s structure? Is the organization team oriented, hierarchical or a mix of these structures and how does this impact the way you present yourself?

9 Tailoring Your Cover Letter and Resume When asked how important it is for candidates to customize their applications for each job, engineering employers across Ontario rated this as very important (4.4 out of 5). Analyze the posting to determine what percentage of the posting you are qualified for Your cover letter and resume should account for every skill set and qualification listed in the job posting Reflect the language of the posting in your CV and provide evidence to support how you have demonstrated these skills in the past Utilize the cover letter to focus on your strongest assets and to outline areas where you have the potential to grow

10 What Employers are Seeking Technical Skills When asked about the importance of certain technical skills when hiring for an engineering or technology position, engineering employers responded in the following way: 69% rated the knowledge of Canadian codes, standards, regulations, etc. as very important 52% rated the knowledge of technologies used by the company as very important 50% rated the knowledge of technical software applications as very important

11 What Employers are Seeking Soft Skills Soft skills are key, especially team working skills and the ability to relate to customers and clients. Percent ranking specific soft skills as important or very important on a 1-5 scale. Spoken communication skills 98% Written communication skills 95% Ability to work in a team 97% Ability to work with opposite gender 95% Ability to work with diverse groups of people 97% Ability to relate to customers or clients 98% Knowledge of Canadian business practices 78% Understanding employer and industry needs will help you to establish a more robust CV by better aligning your skills to their requirements.

12 Being Prepared for the Interview Be prepared to describe and share specific examples of your experience as it relates to the requirements and skills outlined in the job posting Bring a portfolio with relevant examples of your work (drawings, technical reports, etc.) Dress to impress Be on time! In fact, get there early! Take note of the office environment and observe the corporate culture. How do the staff interact? Would you want to work here? Humble brag be confident, not cocky Research the company and prepare questions in advance
