2 Chairman s Note The Olympic Games in London 2012 have given Handball the opportunity to introduce thousands and thousands of children in England to this hugely popular world sport. In Europe, Handball is already the biggest participation sport for women and is second only to football for men. The game offers every athletic discipline running, jumping, throwing, catching and diving in a structured and controlled team environment which youngsters thoroughly enjoy. Having played, taught and coached this marvellous game, I would recommend all teachers introduce it to their pupils, girls and boys. I am sure you will find this splendid Toolkit booklet which my colleagues have produced a vital and most informative resource. The schools are central to our development strategy and your pupils will love the speed and excitement of the game. I am sure teachers and other professionals will certainly feel inspired and justified in teaching it. Please help us to fulfil our Olympic Legacy. Remember, Handball is catching pass it on! Michael J Briers Chairman England Handball Association

3 Forward England Handball Association has two stated objectives: To embed Handball in the PE curriculum Handball To make Handball the No.1 Legacy Sport of the 2012 Olympic Games Handball is the simplest, and cheapest, invasion game to introduce onto the PE curriculum Rick Ridings PLT Newchurch Primary School All you need is a ball which children can hold in one hand, rounders posts for goals and a netball court. Every PE cupboard has the equipment needed. Two teams of seven players each (six players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball between each other to throw it into the goal of the opposing team. The team with the most goals at the end of play, wins. // Embedding handball into the PE curriculum will underpin and improve the concepts and skills of all our major games Bruce Welsford, Head of PE Culcheth High School The basic skills of running, jumping, throwing and catching, the concepts of team and individual attack and defence and the objective of scoring a goal occur with great frequency, for ALL participants on court. These are transferable to all our traditional invasion games. // All UK schoolchildren play handball! Andy Roberts, Senior Community Sports Coach, Lymm SSP Many adapted games used as a lead up to introduce major sports are a form of handball. Benchball, Endball, Castleball, et al are only one short step from handball. // Handball is a worldwide, professional, Olympic Sport, for both men and women. Across Europe, Handball is the biggest participant sport for women and second only to soccer for men. In 2007, the International Handball Federation listed 159 member federations - approximately 1,130,000 teams and 31 million players, trainers, officials and referees. It is over 100 years old and predates soccer in many European Countries. GB Men and Women are currently in preparation for Many of these players, having learned the game in English Schools, are now playing professionally in top European clubs. // We hope you join us on our journey. Mick Hegarty EHA Director of Performance Louaz Hofton EHA Director of Development

10 Section 1 Part 3b Handball in the School Sports Partnership 10 Case Study Sustainability Using Sport Unlimited Warrington Wolves Foundation Sport Unlimited Case Study: Handball Young People Handed an Opportunity CSP Cheshire & Warrington Sports Partnership Activity Handball Location Warrington Critical Success Factors Sustainability Date April 2009 Partnership and Planning In September 2007, Warrington School Sports Partnership (WASSP) introduced the Olympic Sport of Handball into its sports delivery programme. The WASSP Handball Strategy targeted four areas: // Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for staff through the England Handball Association (EHA) introduction to Handball. // Volunteering and leadership via the EHA // Competition at KS2 to 5 // Placing handball on the school curriculum. After a period of consultation and planning with the EHA, WASSP was awarded EHA Flagship Partnership Status. This recognised the WASSP Handball Development Strategy as a model of good practice which was to be rolled out nationally as the EHA World Class Initiative. As the strategy progressed, it was further enhanced by developing links between Warrington Wolves Foundation (WWF) and Liverpool Handball Club (LHC), one of the country s leading 1st Division National League teams. The evolving relationship between the four partners (WASSP, WWF, EHA and LHC) lead to a more clearly defined objective of developing eight community handball clubs. The WWF has pledged to recruit volunteer co-ordinators to form support committees for each club. These committees will be tasked with addressing funding and sustainability issues. In the future, the clubs will feed a WWF Handball Academy system and eventually National League Men s and Women s teams.

11 Section 1 Part 3b Handball in the School Sports Partnership Case Study Sustainability Objectives Term 1 objectives included targeting young people from KS3, and following consultation creating four new Out of School Hours Learning (OSHL) clubs around four High School clusters. The clubs aimed to recruit and retain a minimum of eight male and eight female players from KS3, and at the end of the term hold a Warrington Handball KS3 Winter Cup. Coaching, Volunteering and Leadership The handball coaching has been delivered by qualified handball coaches. Some of the coaching posts were advertised, but for most positions individuals were recruited via CPD of existing staff, volunteers within the WASSP network and through partnership with the England Handball Association. Coaches have been provided with further support and assistance in the form of Junior Sports Leaders (JSL s) who have completed their Junior Handball Leaders Award (JHLA) during These young individuals will also use the time towards building their hours for Step into Sport (SIS). The JSL s have had a huge role to play as they also officiated at all competitions, including the Winter Cup. Competition The Warrington Handball KS3 Winter cup in December 2008 was held at Bridgewater High School. There was 100% participation by the four High School clusters involving four boys and four girls teams, eighty players, six coaches, four leaders and five volunteers. to help commemorate the occasion, at the end of the competition the trophies were presented by one of the Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club 1st team players. The Future The objective in terms 2 and 3 is to target groups KS4/KS5 and then KS2 respectively, and to reinforce the OSHL clubs. A further four EHA Junior Handball leaders and referees award courses will be delivered to KS4/5 pupils, followed by end of term Warrington Handball competitions. The Warrington Handball KS2 Summer Cup will be a highlight and will help to synchronise competition across Warrington. 15 Section 2 Part 5 Handball on the Curriculum Handball rules - Short version 15 Keystage 3 and above The Basic Principles of Handball // Handball is a team sport based on fair play principles. // On court there are two male or female teams playing against each other, both trying to score goals with a handball. // The team that has scored the most goals when playing time is over is the winner. // The winning team is given 2 points. If there is a draw, the two teams are awarded 1 point each. Fair Play and Officiating // The beauty of handball is fair play. // It is the two referees who are in charge of leading the game. Their task is to maintain the fair play principle. // Progressive punishment is given to the players who do not follow the rules of fair play or violate the rules in any other way. Progressive punishment Adapting Resources // Sizes 1, 2 and 3 are used for different age groups/genders. Very important - players must be able to grip the ball in one hand. // The goal height is 2 metres, the goal width is 3 metres. // The playing time can be varied and is up to 2 x 30 minutes in official games. Teams / Players / Team Officials / Referees // Each squad consists of up to 14 players. On court a team has 6 field players and 1 goalkeeper. // Within each team the players are interchangable during the game. // All field players of a team wear identical, coloured uniforms. Goalkeepers wear uniforms that differ from those of the field players. // Players are NOT permitted to wear objects that could be dangerous (watches, rings, earrings, necklaces, etc.). // Up to 4 team officials are responsible for coaching their team. // 2 referees officiate the game on court in co-operation with the judges table (timekeeper, scorekeeper). Warning 2 minute Disqualification suspension Throws to (re)start the Game // In handball there are five different throws defined by the rules to (re)start the game, which are the throw-off, free throw, goalkeeper throw and 7 metre throw. // A 7 metre throw is given when a clear strong chance is destroyed. // At the beginning of the first and second half time as well as after a goal has been scored a throw-off is taken. 23 Section 2 Part 8 Handball on the Curriculum Handball KS3 Module Guide 23 Year Seven Area of Learning Learning to OUTWIT (Invasion) Venue INDOOR/OUTDOOR (space as appropriate) Module Objectives Pupils should learn: // to perform and combine skills more fluently, consistently and with increasing accuracy and quality // to organise themselves as a team and select and apply strategies consistently and effectively; to adapt strategies and tactics used in one game and apply them to a different one // to prepare for and recover from exercise safely and effectively and to know the principles used; to recognise the benefits to their health of regular exercise and good hygiene and the benefits of being active in games // to make effective evaluations of strengths and weaknesses in their own and others performance; to make suggestions to improve play, eg. on attack and defence tactics. Expectations // Most pupils will make good progress, developing group responses to TASKs A & B // Some will be making more rapid progress and develop responses to TASK C // Some will not make as much progress and need additional support in developing their response to TASK A. Resources Games category cards (wk1), Handball video (wk1), mini whiteboards (wk1-5), small games task cards (wups wks 1-4), handball strategy task cards (wk4), handball technique task cards (wk3), inv game phase descriptor cards (wk2) digital camera (still & video) (wk3-6). Handball Equipment balls, bibs, hockey goals. Success Criteria // Demonstrate consistency and accuracy in the application of attacking and defending techniques in handball // Be able to select and employ strategy and technique to outwit opponents, gain and retain possession, dominate the territory, score goals and prevent opponents from scoring // Describe the cognitive and physical demands of developing, rehearsing and playing invasion games // Be able to observe, analyse and assess the effectiveness of selected strategies. Teaching Strategies Teacher directed learning Self check - independent learning Deploy games for understanding methodology throughout. Vocabulary & Key Concepts Concepts: phases of play, organised attack, moving up/down court, organised defence, set play Positions: ball handler, flanker, line player, driver / half court player, GK Strategies: fast breaking, flat (6-0), staggered (5-1) defence systems. Techniques: trail, jump shot, wing shot, sidearm. Target Tasks In consultation with teachers and their peers, pupils work towards the performance of: TASK A (Adapted from QCA link Unit Yr 6/7) The aim of the game is to plan and organise an attack, and to shoot or score without the defenders touching the ball. Play the game 4v2 or 5v3, on a pitch divided into three sections. The larger team (attackers) starts with the ball in one end section, and tries to score a goal in the other end section. The smaller team (defenders) are allowed in the middle section of the pitch only, and have to try to stop the opposition from scoring or keeping possession. The smaller team scores when it gets the ball in one of two goals in the larger team s starting section. Then: TASK B (Adapted from QCA development unit) In a small even-sided version of handball (4 v 4, 5 v 5), using adapted rule structure, pupils plan for effective team play, applying tactics (eg. fast break, flat defence / staggered defence, line play) applying an understanding of the principles of attack, defence and the phases of play. Each task will be adapted and personalised by each group of pupils TASK C (Extension task adapted from QCA Development Unit) Pupils play nearly full-sided games (5v5) applying formal rule structure, conventions and structures. They devise plans, strategies and team plays to ensure effective teamwork. Pupils work in groups of five or six, design and implement set plays from starts and restarts, eg free throws; corners; centres; penalties. They put them into operation, analyse their effectiveness, and adapt them as needed.
