4 Collabora5on with PGCPS COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS College Completion and Readiness Act of 2013: The Act establishes a number of requirements designed at increasing college readiness and degree completion in the State. The bill includes a number of specific higher education initiatives from across the nation into a streamlined legislative act. Prince George's Community College is creating and implementing a variety of programing to enhance our commitment to student success, including but not limited to addressing college readiness, offering dual enrollment opportunities, and providing incentives for students to complete their degrees. Dual Enrollment: Prince George's Community College has partnered with Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) to offer PGCPS students the opportunity to take courses at PGCC while enrolled in PGCPS at a free or reduced tuition rate. This will allow students to experience college-level course work, earn dual credit towards their high school requirements and a college degree and provide a seamless transition to PGCC when they graduate high school.
5 College and Career Readiness and College Comple5on Act of 2013 Dual Enrollment Dually enrolled means a student is enrolled in A secondary school in the State; and An institution of higher education in the State Does not address dual credit, just dual enrollment Expect up to 2000 PGCPS students to take advantage of this annually A public institution of higher education may not charge tuition to a dually enrolled student.
6 College and Career Readiness and College Comple5on Act of 2013 The LEA shall pay the tuition costs for dually enrolled students. PGCC will charge PGCPS 50% of published tuition costs for both credit and noncredit courses PGCPS will not back bill non-farms students who complete courses satisfactorily (not allowed to back bill FARMS students at all) Bill is silent on fees PGCC will charge PGCPS 100% of published fees for credit and noncredit courses for FARMS students PGCC will charge non-farms students 100% of fees directly PGCPS will pay for books for FARMS students; non-farms students will pay for own books
7 College and Career Readiness and College Comple5on Act of 2013 Eligibility Criteria 16 Years of age on first day of semester in which course is offered (Juniors and Seniors) 2.5 High School GPA College-ready in English, Reading and/or Mathematics May take only courses for which college-ready, based on Accuplacer, Compass, ACT, SAT scores for PGCC» PGCPS will offer Accuplacer each semester for following semester» No limit on re-takes May not take any developmental courses Need permission of school principal /counselor
8 College and Career Readiness and College Comple5on Act of 2013 Available courses Face to face 5 weeks or more in length; hybrid; on-line if successfully completed 6 credits with GPA of 2.5 in those courses; NO WEEKENDER COURSES Number of dual enrollment courses students may take No limit at present Special Orientation being developed by PGCC for students and parents Shared communication plan for PGCC and PGCPS Will be reaching out to private schools over the summer to establish similar agreements
9 Collabora5on with PGCPS Adopt A School Mentoring Program: The Adopt-A-School program is designed to work in the Prince George's County Public Middle Schools. The primary goal of the Adopt-ASchool program is for the PGCC Student Ambassadors and the college to support and mentor middle school students in their quest to learn more about the high school and the college transition process. The Adopt-A-School program allows the student ambassadors to mentor middle school students as well as provide early college exposure through college and career readiness activities for PGCPS middle school students..
10 CPIP Grant #2: CASPAR College and STEM Preparation and Readiness (CASPAR) Funding Agency: MHEC Purpose: Provide interventions to increase college readiness and preparation for students and parents with a focus on STEM. Initial Cohort in Program: Spring 2014 Amount: $148, Writers/PI: Christine Barrow, Carolyn Hoffman, and Terry Bridger (PI)
11 Collabora5on with PGCPS Early Exposure Elementary School Assemblies and Campus Tours: These early exposure programs provide an opportunity for students of a very young age to begin seeing college as a natural next step to high school graduation. They get to explore different career fields and understand the 2+2 concept of community college to early engrain community college as a great first option. Junior Parent Nights: This program focuses on visiting Prince George's county high schools during Junior parent information nights to discuss dual enrollment options, college awareness, preparation for college and the financial aid process. Academic Days: Academic days are designed to introduce prospective students to specific academic programs, services and the role of faculty, staff and students on campus. The program offers a one on one campus experience for the prospective students to gain knowledge of the college and the target program. Each recruitment year we select four specific academic programs and bring in prospective high school students who are interested in the identified area of interest. The students speak with recruitment coordinators regarding enrollment, as well as, faculty and students from the area of interest.
12 Tech- Prep/Career- Technical Educa5on Ar5cula5on Agreements Tech Prep Agreements with the following Academies that articulate to specific PGCC programs Academy of Finance ACF Culinary Arts Nursing/Medical Careers Food and Beverage Management Carpentry, Electrical, HVAC, Masonry or Plumbing Business Management and Finance Accounting Computer Networking Child Growth and Development Teacher Academy
13 Tech- Prep (CTE) Ar5cula5ons General Requirements and Condition PGCPS student must: be accepted to PGCC; complete an approved program of study at PGCPS; enroll in and register at PGCC in the program covered by specific articulation agreements; apply for articulated credit within two years of high school graduation; have a minimum GPA of 2.5, as well as a grade of C or better in the articulated course(s). Higher GPA scores are required for Accounting Professional, Business Management, Business Administration; Teacher Education Program; Early Childhood Education. Usually receive between 3 and 6 college credits, depending on program and agreement
14 Collabora5on with PGCPS ESOL Campus visitation program: The ESOL Campus Visitation Program will expose international public school students to the many opportunities especially tailored for the international student at Prince George's Community College. This program targets the ten schools in Prince George's County with ESOL programs. The students are brought to campus for a one day campus open house where they receive an interactive campus tour with specified stops at the language learning labs and the International Education Center. Students receive a presentation from Financial Aid, the international student academic advisors as well as current international students attending Prince George's Community College.
15 Collabora5on with other Educa5onal Ins5tu5ons Reverse Transfer: Prince George's Community College has established four partnerships with Towson University, Bowie State University, University of Maryland University College and the University of Maryland College Park to offer students the opportunity to retroactively earn an Associates degree from PGCC using credits earned from one of the partnership schools. Will award first group of reverse transfer degrees in Transfer Day: Prince George s Community College students meet with PGCC advisors and more than two dozen universities and private colleges in Maryland and the Washington metropolitan area. Students can ask college representatives questions about individual scholarships and the application process while comparing their transfer options. Maryland has an advanced articulation system to assist students in a seamless transfer from community colleges to state colleges and universities.
16 Collabora5on with other Educa5onal Ins5tu5ons College Goal Sunday: College Goal Maryland is a statewide volunteer program that provides free information and assistance to students and families who are applying for financial aid for post secondary education. College Goal Maryland brings together financial aid professionals from colleges and universities along with other volunteers to help college-bound students and their families complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). PGCC has hosted a site for this event for the past several years. Most recently, this event was held on February 1, UMCP Masters class visit: Annually in the spring, Prince George s Community College hosts a cohort of graduate students for a day-long discussion in support of the focus on Student Affairs.
17 Collabora5on with other Educa5onal Ins5tu5ons PGCC Partners Program: The PGCC Partners Program opens doors for collaboration between Prince George's Community College and established educational programs in the community. Students receive assistance with the college enrollment process. This program not exposes students to the different opportunities at Prince George's Community. Each partner has a individualized plan of services provided to meet their student population and needs. We currently have established partnerships with the following programs: UMEOC University of Maryland Educational Opportunity Center Year-Up Gear-Up First Generation College Bound Edgewood Properties Kasey Foundation Maryland Foster Youth Program Prince George's County Library System Latin American Youth Center Maryland Multicultural Youth Center Patriots Technology Center Foundations First Home Care The Lovely Ladies of Laurel DSS Foster Care Action Langley Park The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission Even Start at Bladensburg HS Butterflies Inc InReach Inc 4-H Prince George's County Extension office and homeschool branches
18 Collabora5on with other Educa5onal Ins5tu5ons Maryland Veterans Resilience Initiative (MaVRI): Participate in a partnership with Maryland Veterans Resilience Initiative (MaVRI) headed by UMCP. PGCC Veterans Services has been working together through the Peer Facilitators program, which has provided ideas on ways to improve our veterans club and services on campus.
