2 One cost-saving option is to attend a community college. Studies indicate that students who spend their first two years at a community college & then go on to graduate from 4-year colleges are as well prepared academically as those who go directly to 4-year colleges.

3 Why do students choose community colleges? Academic Reasons Social Reasons Undecided about a major or a transfer destination Economic reasons

4 Academic Reasons Community colleges, with open admissions, accept all students regardless of high school record & SAT/ACT scores.

5 However community colleges also have rigorous assessment testing to determine course placement. Developmental courses, when necessary, provide many students with a second chance to move to college-level courses.

6 Students who were on the edge of getting into competitive four-year schools as high school seniors can be assured of acceptance to many dream schools as transfer students by earning excellent grades at the community college.

7 Admission for transfer students at many schools is based primarily on performance in college-level courses. The high school record and SAT/ACT scores are usually not required if the student has completed credits at the community college.

8 Why else do students attend community colleges? Many aren t socially ready to balance the freedom (and stress) of living away from home with the challenges of the classroom.

9 Another reason students attend community colleges is their uncertainty about goals Students can complete general courses to explore options as well as take more time to investigate transfer schools.

10 These days, an increasingly obvious reason to attend a community college is COST.

12 MANY Institutions Offer Transfer Scholarships Here are two examples: Phi Theta Kappa Awards. All transfer students who enter St. Mary's with an A.A. or A.S. degree, a GPA of 3.5 or better, and who are members in good standing of Phi Theta Kappa receive this award in the amount of $1,000 to $4,000. Transfer Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to transfer students with outstanding academic records at another college. Academic excellence can be demonstrated by a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in academic courses and a rigorous course of study. Awards range from $500 to $4,000 per year.

13 A Few Myths about Community Colleges 1) Courses are easier at the community college.

14 Reality this may be true BECAUSE: Small class sizes at the community college create an atmosphere to succeed. Professors have a sole responsibility to teach there are no graduate assistants, and the pressure of publish or perish doesn t exist.

16 Another Myth: 2) The only students at community colleges are those who didn t get in anywhere else

17 The Reality Great students have always, and will increasingly, attend community colleges for reasons other than academic issues. Look at the services in place for excellent students: Challenging honors courses Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for students who maintain a 3.5 GPA many generous PTK scholarships Transfer services and advising

18 Myth # 3 The community college is Grade 13

19 Reality: Students have to take their own responsibility for this one. Those who seek new friendships and get involved in student activities can break away from a Grade 13 frame of mind. It also helps when high school counselors and teachers react positively to a student s decision to attend a community college!

20 Transfer Resources at the CC 1) Transfer Workshops 2) A Transfer Day each semester 3) Counselors/Advisers who specialize in transfer information 4) A Transfer Advising Page on the Web maintained by the CC

21 5) Articulation Agreements Many institutions offer guaranteed admission to community college students who earn certain GPA s. Students can enroll at the community college knowing that all of their courses will transfer to the school or schools of interest through these agreements.

22 Transfer Resource #6, Our Secret Weapon ARTSYS The State of Maryland s computerized articulation database, ARTSYS ( Lists transfer information for Maryland colleges and universities, both public and private.

26 The Role of the High School Counselor Stay updated on programs/services at the CC Become adept at using ARTSYS, the State of Maryland s Transfer Articulation System (invite a CC representative to a department meeting to demonstrate ARTSYS) Encourage students to prepare for assessment testing Respect the student s decision to attend a Community college

27 For many students, the path to a student s choice institution starts at a community college. Students can complete one or two years of a four-year degree Save money and get a quality education Then transfer to a four year college for their junior and senior years.
