Founded in 1936 by the Congregation of Sisters of Saint Agnes, Marian University is a community committed to learning, dedicated to service and social justice, and joined together by spiritual traditions. Located in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the University inspires personal and professional success through an engaging, valuesbased education. 3 MISSION STATEMENT OF MARIAN UNIVERSITY EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE Marian University is a Catholic applied liberal arts community that welcomes diverse spiritual traditions. Sponsored by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes, Marian University engages students in the education of the whole person. We embrace justice and compassion and transform lives for professional service and leadership in the global community. HISTORY Marian University opened as Marian College on September 8, 1936, with eight faculty and 17 full-time and 25 part-time students. The Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes (CSA), founded as a teaching order by pioneer Father Caspar Rehrl, sponsored and staffed the fledgling institution. When the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) barred the Sisters from student-teaching in public schools while wearing religious habits, Sisters Aloysia Leickem and Vera Naber petitioned the DPI to create their own college. Sister Aloysia became Marian s first president, and Sister Vera was Marian s first academic dean. In 1941, Marian received accreditation to grant a bachelor s degree in elementary education, and Marian s first eight CSA graduates graduated in August The first lay graduates received their degrees in Although Marian was founded as a women s university, the institution officially became coeducational in Current enrollment is over 30% male. When the St. Agnes School of Nursing program closed in 1967, Marian absorbed that program into its Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum, which began in The nursing program, ranked #10 in Wisconsin by Best-Nursing-Colleges. com, celebrated its 50th anniversary in Increasing numbers of students and faculty necessitated a move in the mid-1960 s to the current 78-acre campus, bounded by South National Avenue and East Division Street. Regional and national accreditation has expanded throughout the University s history. In 1949, Marian began its long affiliation with Catholic University of America, and was recognized by the National Catholic Educational Association. When the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredited Marian for teacher education in 1960, North Central encouraged Marian s administration to strengthen the liberal arts and add more academic majors. The University s commitment to the liberal arts has continued since then. In 1987, the North Central Association approved Marian s Master of Arts degree in Education. The original Master of Science program in Quality, Values and Leadership graduated its first class in The program was altered in 2015 to grant a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership. The Master of Science in Nursing program began in 2002 and a Master of Science in Thanatology (formerly a concentration titled Grief and Bereavement) began in Marian s first doctorate program, in Educational Administration and Leadership, began in On May 1, 2008, Marian College was officially recognized by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools as Marian University. 3

The University offers an honors program to provide advanced-level programming in the liberal arts for students with high academic potential and a Federal TRiO Student Support Services program, which identifies, mentors and prepares eligible students for success in achieving their undergraduate degrees. Marian also prides itself on a commitment to the holistic growth and education of its students, particularly the significant number of first-generation and underserved learners. The University has several unique programs to support and celebrate these students. Amongst these is a donor-funded program designed to help break the cycle of poverty for single parents by removing the barriers to their educational success through financial support, counseling and other services. This unique program consistently achieves a 90% graduation rate.
