4 What is? More and more children in the United States and in Georgia are cared for every day in outof home early care and education settings. A growing body of research supports the notion that the quality of care children receive in their child care settings dramatically affects their physical, mental, and academic development. Consequently, the emphasis on improving the quality of early care and education services has increased. is a systemic approach to assess, improve, and communicate the level of quality in early learning programs. Similar to rating systems for other service related industries, assigns a quality rating to early learning programs that meet a set of defined program standards. By participating in, early learning programs embark on a path of continuous quality improvement. is intended to improve the quality of early learning programs through aligning and coordinating system wide initiatives. This improvement will have lasting effects for Georgia s children, families, and economy. : Identifies indicators that enhance children s development and promote school readiness. Increases quality of early learning services. Increases families understanding and demand for higher quality early learning. Increases professional development opportunities, benchmarks, and rewards for a range of early learning practitioners and providers. Creates a cross sector framework that can link standards, technical assistance, monitoring, finance, and consumer engagement for a range of programs: family day care homes, group day care homes, child care centers, school based programs, Head Start programs, and others. Orientation and ERS Overview are available free of charge to all early learning programs. All Directors and/or Owners of early learning programs participating in Georgia s must complete these two training sessions before the final portfolio is submitted. There are many other training sessions available that will assist you in your quality journey, as well as help you achieve higher point levels in the portfolio. A benefit of participating in is free training on a variety of topics. Registration will be limited based on program type and provider role. For example, family child care providers will receive top priority for FCCERS classes; preschool staff will receive top priority for ECERS In Depth; infant toddler teachers will receive top priority for ITERS In Depth; and administrators will receive top priority registration for Orientation and ERS Overview. 5 Stewards of Children From the Darkness to Light website ( Child sexual abuse is likely the most prevalent health problem children face, with the most serious array of consequences. In fact, 1 in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. This means that whether you work with youth, are a parent, or are simply a member of a community, it is highly likely that someone you know and care for has experienced, or is currently experiencing, child sexual abuse. It's going to happen whether you are prepared to deal with it or not unless you stop it from happening. And the good news is, it can be stopped. In order to equip early learning programs to prevent, recognize and respond to sexual abuse, Stewards of Children training is being made available free of charge throughout the state. In this training, The Five Steps to Protecting Children TM will be introduced. They include: 1. Learn the Facts 2. Minimize Opportunity 3. Talk About It 4. Recognize the Signs 5. React Responsibly While it is our hope that no child would ever be subjected to sexual abuse and no early learning professional would ever have to encounter another victim, the current trends show us that this is a risk worthy of attention and preparation. You will begin seeing these trainings advertised on our calendars. There is one training listed on this current calendar for the month of October. Additional trainings are being scheduled will be available in the near future. We are happy to assist you in finding the training you need to serve the children and families for whom you care. Evaluating Training Early learning professionals need the knowledge, skill, and disposition to succeed. This means that every professional development plan and experience should aim to help teachers develop in one, two or all three of these areas. What should teachers know? Some examples follow. What else do you need to know? need the knowledge that helps them do their specific job. They should know workplace and regulation expectations. They should know their children and families. They should know themselves and their own strengths and weaknesses. They should know child development. What skills should teachers have? These take guidance, time and opportunity to develop. Some examples follow. What skills do you need to sharpen? can plan. They can assess. They can interact effectively with children and families. They can manage the classroom. What kind of disposition should teachers have? These are often known as soft skills, and they have roots in temperament and early life experiences, but they can be developed in adulthood with positive support and feedback from others. Some examples follow. What traits do you need to work on? are flexible and creative problem solvers. They are emotionally healthy professionals who handle conflict without negativity or overreaction. They have and express genuine care and concern for others. They can function positively and productively in a team environment.

7 TRAINING POLICIES REGISTRATION All participants must pre register and pay any applicable fees in order to attend the class of choice. Enrollment is on a first come first served basis. This includes all courses offered. o Your enrollment will NOT be processed until payment is received. o We will NOT collect fees at the time of the class. o Enrollment will be closed and registration fee returned when class limit is reached. Registration should include name of person attending, date and training desired, county of employment, and a phone number. An address and license/registration number would also be helpful, but is not required. Participants that register through e mail or fax submission will receive confirmation from CCR&R notifying their registration has been processed and confirmed. Until you receive this e mail your registration is not confirmed. FEES CEU S Training fees must be received before the training date noted on the calendar in order to be registered. Fees received in our office after the training date will be returned, or a credit will be given towards another class. Fees may be mailed, with registration form, to the following address: GRU CCR&R 277 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Suite 104 Macon, GA o We currently accept payment in the form of credit cards (by phone), checks, money orders, and cash. o Cash fees may be dropped off during our normal business hours: Monday Friday 8:30 am 5:00 pm o Checks and money orders should be made payable to: GRU CCR&R. o There will be a 30 fee for any returned checks. Multiple returned checks will result in a requirement for alternate payment methods for future training sessions. If a check is received for a class for which GRU CCR&R is not receiving payment, attempts to contact the participant will be made in order to return the payment. We cannot forward payment on to any other agency or person. We offer CEU s for every state approved training on our calendar. These are necessary for CDA renewal and are also required by certain agencies. To receive CEU credit for training, check the box on the registration form. You can include payment for the CEU (3 per credit hour) with your training registration fee, if applicable. You will also need to complete a CEU application and return it to our office. CANCELLATIONS Classes are subject to cancelation if there is not an adequate enrollment. o Class cancelation is determined at least three (3) days BEFORE the class is scheduled to be held and all participants will be notified via phone and/or e mail of any cancelations. If weather conditions may create unsafe travel conditions, it is recommended that you contact the main CCR&R office to confirm the status of the class. If a class is canceled due to weather, we will make every attempt possible to contact all registered participants and reschedule the class. If you pay for a training and are unable to attend, a credit will be given only if we have received advanced notice. If you register for a training and do not give advanced notice of cancelation, you may not be permitted to register for another training for one year. PROFESSIONAL ETIQUETTE All participants are required to participate for the full training time allotted. o Participants will not be allowed to enter if arrival is fifteen minutes after the scheduled start time. o Class credit will not be given for late arrival. o Leaving during a training session, extended absence during a training and/or participating in phone calls or text messaging will result in a loss of training credit. In order to ensure a quality training experience for everyone, children are not permitted in trainings.
