1 VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME FAQs What is the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015? The FIFA U-20 World Cup is the Federation Internationale de Football Associations second largest tournament. The world s top 24 U- 20 teams from Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, Central and North America and Oceania compete for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Winners Trophy. The tournament hosts some of the best up and coming players, some of whom go on to compete in the FIFA World Cup. How do I apply to become a volunteer for the FIFA U20 World Cup 2015? You can apply to become a volunteer by going to the FIFA U-20 Volunteers Page and clicking on the link Apply Now. You can find this by clicking on this link fifa.com/u20worldcup/organisation/volunteers What are the minimum requirements to become a volunteer? Volunteers must be 17 years of age on or before the 17 th October This is due to the age requirement that security checks can be processed in New Zealand. Be available to work a minimum of 6-9 days depending on region. Match days may be up to 8 hours long, including breaks. Be available for each step of the volunteer process and undergo any training sessions as required. Undertake and successfully complete a police vetting check Have read and agreed to the Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Statement. Where do we need volunteers? We seek volunteers in the seven host cities across New Zealand, Auckland, Whangarei, Hamilton, Christchurch, Dunedin, New Plymouth and Wellington. Due to the tight tournament schedule, you can only apply to work in one host city. I would like a leadership role. How do I go about this? There are some leadership roles available during the tournament. These roles will be selected during the interview stage. What do I receive as a volunteer? New friends and contacts Personal development A full uniform to keep after the tournament. To be worn on all match days. Exclusive training Experience of a lifetime at one of the biggest events ever held in New Zealand. Food and refreshments when working on match days. Certificate of participation 1
2 Will accommodation and transport be given to volunteers? Sorry, but unfortunately accommodation and transport will not be provided for the volunteers so arrangements will be up to you if you live outside of the venue area. Parking will also not be available at the venue itself and arrangements to secure parking should be made prior. When do I receive my accreditation and uniform? Uniforms and accreditation will be handed out in May, prior to the tournament. An notifying you of the location and dates will be sent out close to the time. I have no previous volunteer experience, can I still apply? Absolutely! Previous volunteer experience is not essential in applying to be part of this tournament. Full training will be given in all areas, regardless on experience. Some roles however will be for those with particular skills and experience, so roles will be selected for individuals based on skills and preference. I am not available for all match days at my venue. Can I still volunteer? It is not essential that you are available to attend all the match times at you venue, however preference in roles will go to those who are available to do so. Will I be able to watch any matches? You may be able to view some matches during work breaks, however it is important to remember that as a volunteer you are there to help, not to watch. You will have the opportunity to experience the atmosphere that comes with such an amazing event and be part of the biggest celebration in global football ever seen in New Zealand whilst working in your role. Do I get to choose the area that I wish to work in? You will be able to apply for your top three preferred functional area choices, however we cannot guarantee any role. It is important to remember that each role requires specific skills and volunteers may be suited to certain areas. Can I volunteer in more than one host city? Due to the tight match schedule and the requirement to be available for all match days and training you will be required to choose a preferred venue for volunteering. Can I apply with a friend or family member? Friends and family members can apply to volunteer, however we cannot guarantee that you will be working in the same area. 2
3 Can I volunteer if I live outside New Zealand? In order to become a volunteer you must be a resident in New Zealand and be able to attend an interview. This is due to the requirement for a Police check, which cannot be done for non-residents. Can I volunteer if I have a disability? Yes. The National Volunteer program of the FIFA U-20 World Cup is dedicated to making the event accessible for all volunteers. You may let us know in confidence about any needs during the application and interview process. My child/ren is interested in being part of the Youth Programme (ball kids, player escorts, flag bearers), how do they get involved? The FIFA Youth Programme has been running since the 1998 FIFA World Cup and underscores the importance FIFA places on enabling children to connect with football, from an early age and regardless of gender. The official FIFA Partners play a key role in selecting participants for the Youth Programme and further information will be made available closer to the tournament. What process is involved? The following diagram demonstrates your volunteer journey. Each step in the volunteer journey will vary in length of time between individuals. When will I know I have been selected in a role? You will know the outcome of your roles after the interview process and Police Vetting Checks have been carried out. Roles will begin to be offered in December In some cases it may be a while until you find out that you have been successful. We ask for 3
4 patience at this stage of the process, as some of these roles will not be confirmed until February. If you think that you should have received an offering you a role and have not by then, please contact the Volunteer Help Desk. When and what training is involved? Compulsory Training will be delivered to all volunteers, regardless of experience levels. The goal is to be fully prepared for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Training will vary in times according to the role that has been assigned to you. Training will be combined of online and face-to-face training and include: Orientation Training: In order to introduce and provide an overview for the tournament. Role Specific Training: This will cover specific duties and procedures in your allocated role giving you a how to. Venue Training: Covering the layout of the venue, functions preformed, policies and procedures including the health, safety and emergency specific procedures. Leadership Training: This training will be for candidates who are selected to be group leaders. Where can I find the Terms of Conditions and Privacy Statement for volunteers? Click on the links below: Terms and Conditions Privacy Statement Why do you require my personal information? We need to be able to contact you at any time during the tournament. It is also important that we can update you on interview and training times and contact you to share important information with you prior to the tournament. What is involved with the Police Vetting Checks? Police checks are a required part of applying to become a volunteer. Theses checks help to protect society s most vulnerable members, including children, older people and people with special needs. If you do not pass this check, you will no longer be considered for a volunteer role. What is the volunteer portal? Once you have registered to become a volunteer you have access to the Volunteer Portal on the Volunteers Page. The Portal contains all the information you need to know, including the Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Statement. 4
