Catalog Description Limits; continuity; concepts of the derivative; differentiation of algebraic and transcendental functions; applications of the derivative; antidifferentiation; the indefinite integral; the definite integral; the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; numerical integration; integration involving logarithmic functions; some applications of the integral. Some of the course concepts will be explored and/or enhanced with current technology. Textbook Calculus; Early Transcendental Functions, 5 th Edition, by Larson and Edwards Course Websites We will use Desire2Learn as a course website to post important information such as course announcements, copies of lecture notes, grades, etc. The Desire2Learn website is free and can be accessed via your online services account. We will also use WebAssign, a corresponding website hosted by the publisher of our textbook. You will be expected to do all of your graded homework online via WebAssign. The website will also be used to post important class information. To register for WebAssign, go to and follow the registration instructions. You will need the student code from your textbook and the course key: oaklandcc Calculator A TI-84 or TI-83 graphing calculator is required for this course. No calculator containing a Computer Algebra System (CAS) will be allowed on any exams (e.g. TI-nspire CAS, TI-92, or TI-89)

2 GE Outcomes: Critical Thinking, Quantitative Literacy Classroom Assessment A variety of Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) will be used to assess this class. These CATs will be random, non-graded assessments used to gain valuable feedback. I will use the feedback to try and improve my delivery of the subject matter wherever possible. It is important that you do not fall behind in math, as most of the material is comprehensive and makes it difficult to catch up. Homework: All homework assignments must be completed online via WebAssign. The assigned homework problems are intended to generate in-class discussion and prepare you for tests. Tests: Four tests will be given throughout the semester. Each test will be given on the dates listed in the course schedule. Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive final exam given on the last day of class (Monday, 12/17/12). If you score a higher percent on the final exam than your lowest test score, your lowest test score will be replaced with the final exam percentage. Make-up tests/exams will only be given in extreme circumstances. It is the student s responsibility to contact the instructor and make arrangements. All tests must be

3 made-up before the next class meeting after the scheduled test. Failure to do so will result in a 0 test grade. Withdraws The withdrawal deadline is Monday, 11/26/12. If you change your mind about the course, make sure you officially withdraw by the deadline to avoid receiving an F for the course. Incompletes An incomplete (I) grade may only be assigned if the following conditions are met: The situation which prevents the student from completing the course during the regular term must be outside the student s control. At least 75% of the course must already have been successfully completed by the student. The instructor must be informed of the circumstances prior to the end of the term, and must agree to award an I grade. The student and the instructor must complete the College Agreement Form for an I grade prior to the end of the term. The department chair must give prior approval. Classroom Notes Students must be respectful toward each other and the instructor during class. An example of being disrespectful would be talking during lectures or tests. Disrespectful students may be asked to leave the class. Cheating will not be tolerated. Cell phones must be turned off during class. No texting or calling will be allowed in the classroom. As stated above, class attendance and participation is extremely important. It is highly recommended that you do not miss any classes and complete all homework on time. Available Support The use of all support services is strongly recommended. AH-ASC Math/Science Lab: Free walk-in math tutoring is available in room G-150. Please refer to the Math Lab for hours of availability and more information. Office Hours: My office hours are listed above. Feel free to drop-in during any of these hours if you need help. If you have any questions regarding FERPA, please refer to page 17 in the current College Catalog. Safety Familiarize yourself with exits and evacuation routes. OCC has a public address system for specific instructions. In an emergency, follow instructions of an OCC Public Safety officer, your instructor, and/or college administrator.
