Office hours or are the best way to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Course Prerequisites: None Textbook: Cole, G.F., Smith, C.E., & DeJong, C. (2014). Criminal Justice in America (8 th ed.). Boston, MA: Cengage Learning. Course Description: This course is an introduction to the criminal justice system and is intended to give students an overview of the various levels of the criminal justice system, including how offenders are processed and the challenges faced within the system. More specifically, this course will cover theories of crime, policing, corrections, legal aspects of the system, and juvenile justice. Students will obtain the foundation for future criminal justice courses and potential employment opportunities. Student Learning Outcomes: There are a number of specific goals to be met at the end of this course. -Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System: Students will gain an overall understanding of the criminal justice system and the various components within it, focusing on the terminology, classifications, and trends related to the functions of the criminal justice system. -Communication: Students will focus more on articulating arguments and ideas through written communication. -Intercultural Knowledge: Students will learn about the challenges different groups face within the criminal justice system. Grading Policy: Total points: 365 Grades will be based on the following assignments: Three examinations (including your final) Exam 1 is worth 50 points, while Exams 2 and 3 are worth 75 points each. Two response papers, both of which are worth 50 points Attendance will comprise 38 points In-class activities are worth 10 points (5 points each) Other activities, including pop quizzes or other undetermined class activities are worth 17 points (2 of which are free points, because I am awesome).

2 Students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center on campus for assistance with their response. This is a great resource that is available to all students and should be utilized. Check out their website for more information. Final Exam: The final exam will be 30% old information and 70% new information, and information from any guest speakers will be on your exams. The format will be the same as the previous exams. 3 Attendance Policy: Students are permitted to miss 3 hours of class time, or three class sessions, before it impacts their grade. Any absences beyond these 3 hours will count against your attendance grade. Attendance will be taken regularly, and those students who will miss class due to sporting events, illness, or other activities will be expected to provide documentation in order for their absence to be excused. You will sign in every class period, and each class period will be the equivalent of 1 point. Points will be added up at the end of the semester, and students missing more than 3 hours of class time will lose one percentage point per absence for their final attendance grade. Make-up Policy: Make-ups are allowed only in the most extreme, excused circumstances. Exams will be entirely essay, and must be taken during the last week of classes. If you miss an assignment during class that is graded, you are NOT able to make that up. Most in-class assignments are designated in the syllabus, but there may be other assignments that are not previously scheduled. If you turn in a Response Paper late, you will lose 1 point per day, up until 3 days after the assignment is due. No papers will be accepted after the 3 day period. You are always more than welcome to turn in assignments early, and it is in your best interest to talk to me sooner rather than later regarding conflicts. Classroom Expectations: All students are expected to be courteous and attentive while in class. Students should feel free to ask questions at any time. Students are permitted to use laptops for note taking if necessary, but please refrain from surfing the web. If it appears that this cannot be followed, laptops will be banned. Please feel free to contact me at anytime through , but I will expect s to be written in complete and proper English. (I will NEVER TTYL). As the instructor, I reserve the right to modify the class schedule throughout the semester as necessary. Schedule conflicts with guest speakers or outside tours may arise, and I will work to alleviate any issues as they are brought to my attention and make any and all necessary adjustments. You are accountable for any information sent via , including assignment information, due date changes, or any other information I send in an . Academic Honesty: Academic integrity policy: Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. You are expected to have read and understood SUU Policy # 6.33 and the current issue of the student handbook regarding student responsibilities and rights.

No cell phones will be permitted during exams. Please keep them in your bags or pockets during exams. I reserve the right to ask anyone not following these rules to leave, thus losing attendance credit for that day as well. Miscellaneous Information: I expect you to put in the necessary effort to succeed in this class. There is the potential for differing opinions and viewpoints among students that may arise during class. I expect everyone to be courteous and attentive, and most importantly, respectful of each other. Some of the information covered may be offensive or graphic to some. It is not my intention to offend anyone, but please feel free to talk to me if you have any concerns. Work for this class must be for this class only. This means it must be original work that you created during the course of the class. Work from other classes will NOT be permitted. Finally, if you make an appointment with me during my office hours and fail to show up without at least one hour cancellation notice prior to the meeting time, you will NOT be able to make future appointments with me. You will be able to show up during scheduled office hours, but I will not arrange a special time to meet with you.
