Realization of an informative booklet by the Province of Potenza The Province of Potenza has just realized two products to spread the project: - a colored informative booklet, paper size A5, 16 pages (2000 copies printed), that you can download from the web site - a colored abstract of the booklet (80x200 cm), printed on roll-up support, available for the beneficiaries on the web site. These tools expand the information pack and could be useful to attend meeting, conferences, workshops and exhibitions. 2
Delivery of plates and participation certificates to the students who took part in the contest Ideas for creating a representative image of LIFE+ RI.CO.PR.I. On the 8 th of June were delivered plates and certificates of the contest Ideas for creating a representative image of LIFE+ RI.CO.PR.I. to the students of Cerreto Laziale and Castel San Pietro Romano primary schools, (Lazio Region, Rome). The delivery took place also at the Art Institute of Potenza, at Albano di Lucania Comprehensive Institute and at the middle school of Campomaggiore. Thanks to all headteachers, teachers and students. Congratulation to the winners. The first prize was for the drawing realized by the group Golden wings of Cerreto Laziale Comprehensive Institute. It shows a butterfly that through its wings represent the biodiversity. The second prize was for the drawing of the 4 th class of Castel San Pietro Romano Primary School Jacopone da Todi. It represents a wild orchid in the grassland habitat affected to the project. 3
Second executive committee and visit of the Project Monitor On the 17 th of May, there was the second executive committee meeting of LIFE+ RI.CO.PR.I. project and the visit of the external Project Monitor dr. Tiziana Nadalutti. She visited the Province of Potenza and the seat of the Park Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane. Meeting was attended by representatives of all partners: Maria Vinci, Project Manager, Alessandro Travaglini, Scientific Coordinator (University of Rome Tor Vergata ), Marco Delorenzo, Director of the Regional Park Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane, Rocco Luigi Lombardi, President of the Park, ing. Nicola Stolfi, President of CIA Basilicata and ing. Donato Vincenzo Pafundi, Director General of the Province of Potenza and Responsible for Communications. During the meeting, some experts explained the actions results scheduled after the improvement of grassland structure, soil bioengineering interventions and seeding of the species belonging to the two habitat. You can read the reports on the web site section Action to the following links: 4
Action C1 (Removal of shrubs) This action is about the removal of some kind of shrubs that are in two low grade areas of the SCI (Sites of Community Importance) Dolomiti di Pietrapertosa : the Spartium junceum, that covers more than 40% of the area, the Quercus Cerris and the Quercus Frainetti, that cover more than 30% of the area. Action C2 (Eradication of alien and ruderal nitrophilous species) This action is about the eradication of the alien species as the Ailanthus, in the whole area of the SCI Dolomiti di Pietrapertosa, and the ruderal nitrophilous species as the Onopordum acanthium, in the grazing paths. Action C3 (Improvement of grassland structure) This action is about the reinstatement of six springs in the SCI Dolomiti di Pietrapertosa : Fontana del Signore, Masseria Torraca, Monte dell Impiso (Alvanella), Fosso gretale, Masseria Nigro e Frusci. Action C5 (Application of grazing plans) This action expects to enclose the sites subjected to erosion with a wide mesh net of 150 cm, chestnut piles and mobile enclosures. Action C7 (Soil bioengineering interventions and seeding of the species belonging to the two habitat) This action is about two areas of the SCI Dolomiti di Pietrapertosa : Costa Cervitale, where is planning the building of a wooden and stone bridle and a wooden and stone raceway; Monte Impiso, where is planning the building of a 5
faggot to bed out the rooted plants. Action D4 (Realization and placement of informative posters) This action contemplates the realization of informative plates and their placement in the administrative office of the project beneficiaries and the realization and the placement of informative and didactic posters directly in the territories affected by the project, to build educational paths regarding the themes of the project. Scouting in the SCI Dolomiti di Pietrapertosa and meeting with the local farmers On the 18 th of May, after the scouting in the SCI Dolomiti di Pietrapertosa with the Project Manager Maria Vinci and the external Project Monitor Tiziana Nadalutti, there was a meeting with the local farmers at the municipal office of Pietrapertosa. Farmers asked questions about the local economy results of the project and explained some problems about the actual and future life of the grasslands. 6
The environmental education project Praticambiente Informative and educational activities were shared in several schools; the Park Redi Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane and the Province of Rome put in practice the project Praticambiente. In the Park the project, assigned to the C.E.A.S. Dolomiti Lucane, has involved, until now, 516 students of primary and secondary schools in Accettura, Calciano, Oliveto Lucano municipalities (Province of Matera), Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa municipalities (Province of Potenza). It is a two years program that affect the classes of the first and the second cycle of primary and secondary high schools. The Project s aim: communicate to the students the importance of the interaction between physical and psychical factors and other aspects that concern the presence and the activities of man. The project Praticambiente in the Park has been developed by three actions: 1. Didactic activities in the schools of the Park territory, divided in 3 parts: Which environment belong to?, for the first cycle of the primary school; Earth > Water > Ecosystems, for the junior high school; Discovering the grassland, for the second cycle of primary school. 2. Didactic workshop Praticambiente, for the junior high school, through the 4 phases: lesson with discussion, fieldwork, analysis of the collected data and collective discussion of the results. 3. Final event at the seat of the Park, a day in which take part the students, their parents and the school institutions, to see again, 7
through an exhibition, the activities developed and to verify the real acquisition of knowledge learned. The project is in a good state of advancement and the final event, foreseen for the first year, was on 4 th June at the Park. During the month of May, in the province of Rome, primary schools of Cerreto Laziale, Castel S. Pietro Romano, San Vito Romano, Ciciliano and Sambuci municipalities started with several environmental education activities of the project Praticambiente through the association Il Betilo. The project has involved 403 students. The activities will be developed in several actions during the next school year 2012/2013: 1. Didactic activities are divided in 3 steps: - Discovering the grassland, for infancy and primary school. Aim: using of a fairy-tale, a drawing and sensorial perceptions to arouse interest in a specific environment: the grassland. - The importance of biodiversity. Aim: showing how biodiversity could be so rich in a grassland environment. - The sustainable development: the farmers relate. Aim: learning how the wild grazing encourages the preservation of many kind of species. 2. Excursions in the SCI Monte Ruffi and in the SCI Monte Guadagnolo, to teach the importance of the grassland and the grazing. The farmers of this area will replay to the many answers of the students to explain the resources of the area and the difficulty of the management. 3. Final event, a day, during which students, parents, school and municipal institutions and farmers could evaluate what was realized during several project s steps. Thanks for attention and... to the next one! 8
