FRINGE 2005 Workshop ERS and ENVISAT missions status Wolfgang Lengert ERS Mission Manager
ERS-2 mission 14 years of ERS-1/2 data in the archive (suitable for applications requiring long term series products) ERS-2 achieved 10 years in orbit in April 2005 (was designed for 3 years nominal lifetime) Some problems with the platform (gyroscope in 2001, tape recorder in 2003) but all instruments still functioning well engineering solutions have been developed: - new 'gyro-less' working mode - set up of a station network for Low Bit Rate data recovery Operations funding expected until 2008
ERS-1 and ERS-2 missions phases summary Commissioning Ice Roll-tilt (experimental) Multi-disciplinary 2 nd ice Geodetic Shifted Geodetic 2 nd Multi-disciplinary More than 13 years 35 days repeat cycle With 4 years in relaxed attitude control Tandem Commissioning Back-up Tandem Multi-disciplinary
ERS satellite and payload status Mission elements Service Module Propulsion and Hydrazine Payload Equipment Bay SAR Image Mode SAR Wave Mode Expected evolution Good Fair Comments Relaxed attitude control +- 2deg, all other subsystems with full redundancy. SPOT-1 platform flown for 17 years before de-orbiting. Only 1/3 of hydrazine has been consumed within 10 years Tape Recorders Failed, Real time mission only with some 40% global coverage. Transmission Tube redundancy available. Scatterometer Fair Sub System on redundant side RA & MWR ATSR GOME PRARE Good Good Scan Mirror problem has been overcome by patches on ground Callibration lamp problem has been overcome by patches on ground Reduced surface transponders covering North & South Poles and Europe only; no redundancy
ENVISAT mission Largest European satellite & largest worldwide EO satellite: - unique combination of 9 instruments addressing land, ocean, ice and atmosphere studies, - instruments working nominally, except for MIPAS (discontinuous operations). Satellite OK with mid-term operations capabilities: - 65 % of hydrazine available, - the on-board hydrazine is the main limiting factor for the mission lifetime 78 different types of data products 250 Gigabytes of data products generated per day Operations funding expected until 2010
Envisat satellite and payload status Mission elements Service Module Propulsion and Hydrazine Payload Equipment Bay ASAR MERIS AATSR RA-2 MWR DORIS SCIAMACHY MIPAS GOMOS Expected evolution Fair Fair Good Good Fair Bad Fair Comments Main limiting factor of the mission Sub-system on redundant side Instrument on redundant side Progressive mechanical degradation in non redundant part Instrument on redundant side
Envisat hydrazine consumption Hydrazine consumption Preliminary prediction Based on current orbit control (+/- 1km), prediction with 3 scenarios: optimistic, typical, worse case 100% 90% Hydrazine available onboard 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% Performances better than expected so far today FRINGE 03 recommendation to decrease deadband to +/- 500 m cannot be implemented in order to preserve satellite lifetime optimistic 20% 10% typical worse case 0% Mar-2002 Jul-2003 Nov-2004 Apr-2006 Aug-2007 Jan-2009 May-2010
