3 Healthcare Challenges Clinical End User Adoption With the recent release of the final HITECH Meaningful Use criteria and the increase in health system adoption of new clinical systems and EHR capabilities, more nurses and physicians today are confronted with the challenge to effectively use clinical systems they perceive as difficult to use. Unnecessary delays in the care delivery process can be minimized so that the goals of improved quality of care through more effective application use are realized. Many studies have shown that provider adoption remains one of the greatest barriers to realizing the full benefits of mature clinical systems. Through easy to use applications and minimal administrative steps, physicians and nurses will be able to see more patients while becoming far more efficient and effective in treating their existing ones. Simplified use of CPOE for medications, Clinical Documentation, Results Inquiry along with Medication Administration and Medication Reconciliation programs at point of care can be implemented. These capabilities beg for easy to use end user devices, logon/logoff and quick access to only those applications required by a given provider. A quick scan of the recent client successes indicates the value of this approach: Chester County Hospital, West Chester, Pa. CCH recently went live on a deployment of UCare which began across the Maternity Child Care Departments. The project included a comprehensive clinical end user computing strategy, device selection and deployment process which resulted in in-room arms and devices being implemented within all patient rooms to provide ubiquitous access to patient records at the point of care. A server based desktop computing model was selected for the virtual desktop which supported all clinical applications across all clinical departments including Siemens Medication Administration Checking (MAK), Siemens Soarian EMR, Siemens EDM and other departmental clinical applications. All nursing station, COWs and in-room devices were implemented to support UCare RFID 4

5 authentication methods and each application was enabled for single sign-on providing an easy roaming desktop tap-in/tap-out experience for users across all UCare enabled devices. CCH quickly and effectively deployed UCare across all care settings, even into the Radiology department where tapin/tap-out technology is now universally in place. Community Medical Center, Scranton, PA UMS has provided strategic and technical consulting and managed services to CMC for many years and has been actively involved with the operational support and implementation of many critical IT infrastructure and end user computing technologies. CMC recently began to move towards the UCare solution in support of its imminent EHR selection and implementation initiative. CMC recognizes the need and value of the UCare solutions approach as a necessary step towards a successful EHR implementation and meeting meaningful use measures. UMS is currently engaged in the upgrade of the existing pervasive Citrix Presentation Server environment to XenApp6 and XenDesktop which will serve as the virtual desktop foundation for the full UCare solution. Pocono Health System, East Stroudsburg, PA PMC recently engaged UMS in a comprehensive UCare solution initiative for a new End User Computing architecture that began with a strategic assessment and a design. UMS is currently engaged in the pilot implementation phase of the project.
