2 How to change your password on Blackboard 6 LOGGING ON TO BLACKBOARD STEP 1: Begin by traveling to blackboard.uvi.edu,where you will see this page STEP 2: Click Login and you ll see this: STEP 3: Enter your username and password, which should be the same as your UVI address. If you know your UVI address and password, type it in, press login and then go to page 3 of this document. 2

3 If you do not know your UVI address, or you have forgotten your password, go to page 2. WHAT TO DO IF YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR UVI ADDRESS Follow the formula below to determine your UVI address. HOW A STUDENT S UVI ADDRESS IS INITIALLY ESTABLISHED The formula (for account IDs) is: 1. First 3 letters of student s LAST name 2. Last 4 digits of the student s Social Security Number. The formula for INITIAL passwords (must be changed on first use) is: 1. First 3 letters of LAST name. 2. Fifth, Sixth & Seventh digits of Social Security Number. Below is an example of how UVI initially translates a student s name into their ID, password and address: Russell, Leon SSN#: Account ID: rus3456 (last four digits of SSN) Password: rus234 (fifth, sixth, seventh digit) (6 characters total!) WHAT TO DO IF YOU KNOW YOUR UVI ADDRESS, BUT FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD To get your password re-set, you must call IT Help Desk directly at (340) ACCESSING THE TEMP USER ACCOUNT AS A TEMPORARY FIX To help students get on Blackboard immediately while they resolve UVI address problems, professors may provide students with a temporary user account for logging on to their class site. If you need to access the site as a temp user, talk with your professor. 3

4 Remember, the temp user account is temporary. You can utilize the temp user account to read Blackboard, but you cannot use it to post to class bulletin boards, take exams on Blackboard, see grades, join groups or send mail on the service. For these, you must have a valid UVI address and password. HOW TO FIND YOUR CLASSES ON BLACKBOARD STEP 1: Once you successfully log in, you should see a screen that looks like this (only with slightly different information): STEP 2: Your courses will appear under Courses: Quick View. Click the course you want to visit. STEP 3: You will find yourself at a class page that looks somewhat like this: 4

6 HOW TO NAVIGATE AROUND BLACKBOARD To navigate around Blackboard, it helps to understand the difference between site navigation and class navigation. Site navigation refers to the way you move around the Blackboard site as a whole, beginning with your login screen and proceeding to each of your classes. The site navigation menu can always be found near the top of your screen. If you look at the screen shot below, you ll see the navigation menu is the one reading Courses _ Speech 120: Public Speaking _ Assignments Class navigation refers to way you move through the internal menu choices of each individual class you re taking on Blackboard. The class navigation generally runs down left hand side of your screen. On the image below, it is the menu reading Assignments, Live Chat Area, Syllabus, etc. 6

7 CHANGING YOUR ADDRESS AND PASSWORD ON BLACKBOARD STEP 1: Once you successfully log in, you should see a screen that looks like this (only with slightly different information). To change your address on Blackboard, choose personal information. Choose personal information 2. The next screen you see will have the choices below. Pick Edit Personal Information to change your address in Blackboard. Pick Change Password to change your password in Blackboard. 7
