1 UNIVERSITY OF COLOMBO, SRI LANKA POST OF LECTURER(PROBATIONARY)/ SENI LECTURER GRADE II/I IN THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY (SINHALA MEDIUM) The University of Colombo will entertain applications from suitably qualified persons f the above posts upto 13 th February EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (A) Lecturer(Probationary) : (1) A Degree with specialisation in Geography with First Second Class (Upper Division) Honours; (2) A Degree with specialisation in Geography with Second Class (Lower Division) Honours; (3) (a) A Degree with specialisation Geography without honours any other Degree with at least Second Class honours, A Masters Degree in Geography obtained after a full-time course of study of at least two academic years ( an equivalent part-time course of study) with a research component by way of thesis/dissertation a Doctal Degree. substantial research component Masters degree with at least 60 credit units with not field/discipline a Doctal Degree. (4) Such academic professional qualifications professional experience as may be approved by the University Grants Commission upon the recommendation of the University of Colombo. (Cidates having qualifications in the fields of Bio-Geography Development Environmental Management will be preferred over the others) NOTES : (i) Cidates who are eligible under categy (A)(1) above will be interviewed evaluated first. Cidates who are eligible under categy (A)(2) (A)(3) above could be invited f an interview only if applicants qualified under categy (A)(1) above are either not available found to be 1 of 5

2 unsuitable by the Selection Committee after interview evaluation. Appointment of cidates under categies (A)(2) (A)(3) would require the approval of the University Grants Commission. (iii) Cidates eligible under categy (A)(4) above will be invited f an interview only if there are no suitable cidates under categies (A)(1), (A)(2) (A)(3). Appointment of a cidate under categy (1)(4) requires the approval of the University Grants Commission. (iv) All cidates required to make a presentation befe the Selection Committee in der to prove their teaching ability as Lecturer(Probationary). (B) Seni Lecturer Grade II : (1) (i) A Degree with specialisation in Geography with First Second Class (Upper Division) Honours; A Degree with specialisation in Geography with Second Class (Lower Division) Honours; (iii) (a) A Degree with specialisation in Geography without honours any other Degree with at least Second Class honours. (iv) A Masters Degree in Geography obtained after a full-time course of study of at least two academic years ( an equivalent part-time course of study) with a research component by way of thesis/dissertation a Doctal Degree. substantial research component Masters degree with at least 60 credit units with not less than 15 credit units of research by way of thesis/dissertation in the relevant field/discipline a Doctal Degree. (2) (i) A Masters Degree in Geography obtained after a full-time course of study of at least two academic years ( an equivalent part-time course of study) with a research component by way of thesis/dissertation a Doctal Degree. substantial research component Masters degree with at least 60 credit units with not field/discipline a Doctal Degree. Such professional qualifications experience as may be approved by the University Grants Commission upon the recommendation of the University of Colombo (3) At least six (06) years experience in one me of the following :- (i) Teaching at University Level, Professional experience, 2 of 5

3 (iii) Research in a recognized Institution, (iv) Postgraduate Studies to acquire the qualifications stipulated at (2) above. (Cidates having qualifications in the fields of Bio-Geography Development Environmental Management will be preferred over the others) Notes : (a) An applicant who qualifies only under (B)(1)(iii) above may be exempted from (B) (2) (i) above if he/she has a Doctal Degree in the relevant field. An applicant who qualifies only under (B) (1) (iii) above has a Masters Degree as specified under (B) (2) (i) above may be exempted from (B) (2) (i) if he/she has evaluated research dissemination of knowledge in confmity with current guidelines. (c) The current guidelines in regard to evaluated research dissemination is that a cidate should obtain a minimum total of 15 marks from Sections of the Marking Scheme f Posts of Associate Profess/Profess. (extract annexed) Special Notes: Cidates who shall possess the academic qualifications required f Lecturer (Probationary) Non- Medical/Dental in the Scheme of Recruitment who have obtained a Master s Doctal Degree but less than 06 years of experience as specified in the Scheme of Recruitment f Seni Lecturer by open advertisement may be considered f appointment of Lecturer (but Unconfirmed) at the initial step of U- AC3 (III) [then B-04(a)] subject to a three year period of probation. A Lecturer (Non-Medical/Dental) so recruited, who has completed the three year period of satisfacty service the induction training course within a period of one year from the date of appointment may be confirmed in the post of Lecturer, provided that such Lecturer has fulfilled all other requirements specified in the letter of appointment. A Seni Lecturer Grade II may be confirmed in the post on completion of 03 years of satisfacty service in the permanent cadre completion of an induction training course which includes (Teaching/Learning Methodologies) within a period of one year from the date of first appointment. (C) Seni Lecturer Grade I (1) (i) A Degree with specialisation in Geography with First Second Class (Upper Division) Honours; A Degree with specialisation in Geography with Second Class (Lower Division) Honours; (iii) (a) A Degree with specialisation in Geography without honours any other Degree with at least Second Class honours; A Masters Degree in Geography obtained after a full-time course of study of at least two academic years ( an equivalent part-time course of study) with a research component by way of thesis/dissertation a Doctal Degree; substantial research component Masters degree with at least 60 credit units with not less than 15 credit units of research by way of thesis/dissertation in the relevant field/discipline a Doctal Degree; 3 of 5

4 (iv) Such academic professional qualifications professional experience as may be approved by the University Grants Commission upon the recommendation of the University of Colombo. (2) (i) A Masters Degree in Geography obtained after a full-time course of study of at least two academic years ( an equivalent part-time course of study) with a research component by way of thesis/dissertation a Doctal Degree. substantial research component Masters degree with at least 60 credit units with not field/discipline a Doctal Degree. Such professional qualifications experience as may be approved by the University Grants Commission upon the recommendation of the University of Colombo. (3) At least twelve (12) years experience {of which not less than six (06) years should have been after obtaining qualifications stipulated in 2 above} in one me of the following : (i) Teaching at University level, Professional Experience, (iii) Research in a recognized Institution, (iv) Postgraduate Studies. (Cidates having qualifications in the fields of Bio-Geography Development Environmental Management will be preferred over the others) Notes : (a) An applicant who is recruited under (C) (1) (iii) above may be exempted from (C) (2) (i) above if he/she has a Doctal Degree in the relevant field. An applicant who is recruited under (C) (1) (iii) above with a Masters Degree as specified under (C) (2) (i) above may be exempted from (C) (2) (i) if he/she has evaluated research dissemination of knowledge in confmity with current guidelines.(see note (c) below) (c) The current guidelines f evaluated research recd is that a cidate should obtain a minimum of 15 marks. SALARY OTHER CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT : Salary Code: U-AC 3 (f Lecturer(Probationary )/Seni Lecturer Gr. 5 In addition the Government approved allowances applicable to the University system will be paid. The selected cidate will be a member of the Universities Provident Fund as well as of the University Pension Scheme. He/She will contribute 10% of his/her monthly salary to the Universities Provident Fund at the same time the employer will make a total contribution of 15% of his/her salary of which 8% will be credited to the Universities Pension Fund 7% to the Universities Provident Fund. Three percent (3%) of the salary will be contributed by the University to the Employees Trust Fund in terms of the provisions of the Employees Trust Fund Act, No. 46 of The other conditions of appointment will be in accdance with provisions of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978, Universities (Amendment) Act No. 7 of 1985 Universities (Amendment) Act No. 1 of 1995 Ordinances, Bylaws, Regulations Rules, etc. made thereunder.
