PhD in Economics The doctal degree programme is aimed at meeting the academic professional needs of those who are engaged in research consultancy, higher levels of teaching training, administration management, advocacy policy making. The initial registration is f the MPhil with the provision f upgrading to PhD studies on the basis of perfmance during the first year of studies. The research degrees shall be awarded on the basis of a thesis an al examination. The thesis will be prepared under the guidance of one me supervis/s appointed by the University, while the supervisy panel consists of experienced academics professionals from Sri Lanka abroad. The selected cidates shall be required to attend course wk on Economic Research Methods, scheduled f Saturdays during the first four months, simultaneously to develop their research. Admission requirements (i) First Second Class (upper) division in the Special Degree in Economics related field from a recognized university (ii) Master s Degree in Economics in a related field from a recognized university. (iii) Any other postgraduate qualifications recognized by the University asequivalent to (ii) above. 2 2. Master of Financial Economics (MFE): This programme aims to provide theetical analytical competence in Financial Economics. The course of study targets those who are already engaged in financial related fields wish to acquire a deeper understing practical competence in the subject of Financial Economics in a development context to meet ofprofessional dems academic careers. Duration: One Year by Course Wk only i. First Second Class Honours in the Special Degree in Economics a related field, from a recognized university ii. First Second Class in the General Degree Examination with Economics related field as a maj subject, from a recognized university equivalent qualifications two years wk experience in a related field iii. Any other Degree with Economics related field as a maj subject, from a recognized university equivalent qualifications recognized by the University of Colombo five years wk experience in a related field iv. Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Economics/Economic Development from the University of Colombo any other equivalent qualifications recognized by the University of Colombo. v. A professional qualification that will be recognized, on a case by case basis by the University of Colombo, as equivalent to any of the qualifications in (i) to (iv) above. vi. Good knowledge of English adequate computer literacy vii. 3 3. Masters in Economics (MEcon): This programme aims to provide an advanced theetical knowledge analytical skills in economics. The course targets those with an intermediate knowledge of economics who wish to deepen their conceptual analytical capabilities to meet professional dems academic careers. Duration: 2 years of study as follows: Year 1- Course wk modules. Year 2- Dissertation of 30,000 wds i. First Second Class Honours in the Special Degree in Economics a related field, from a recognized university ii. First Second Class in the General Degree Examination with Economics related field as a maj subject, from a recognized university equivalent qualifications two years wk experience in a related field iii. Any other Degree with Economics related field as a maj subject, from a recognized university equivalent qualification recognized by the University of Colombo five years wk experience in a related field iv. Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Economics/Economic Development from the University of Colombo any other equivalent qualification recognized by the University of Colombo. v. Postgraduate Diploma Leading to Masters in Tourism Economics Hotel Management: The programmes are especially designed to improve the knowledge skills essential f decision makers, policy designers, planners, researchers, hotel managers marketers of the tourism industry. It aims to provide advanced theetical & conceptual knowledge with analytical skills that are essential f practical applications. Interactive application iented study methods are employed in thisprogramme with case studies field visits. Duration of the programme will be two years (part-time), in which First Year will be devoted to the Postgraduate Diploma the Second Year will be devoted f Masters. The entire programme consists of two academic years with four (4) semesters. Duration: Post Graduate Diploma (Pg. DTEHM): One (01) year Master Degree (MTEHM): Pg.DTEHM + One (01) year i. The minimum academic entry qualification is a general degree from a recognized University in Sri Lanka. ii. A Postgraduate Diploma a professional qualification recognized by the University of Colombo as equivalent to a degree iii. Three Year Management Diploma from the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism Hotel Management (SLITHM) with Two Years Industry Experience iv. Four Year Management Diploma from the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism Hotel Management (SLITHM) with One-Year Diploma Programme (non-graduate) in Travel Tourism Economics Hotel Management Two Years Industry Experience v. Any other qualifications experience which demonstrates that a cidate possesses appropriate knowledge skills at degree level. And vi. Postgraduate Diploma in Economic Development (Pg.DED): The revised DED programme aims to provide specialized skills training in a number of branches in economics to meet the challenges of current local global economic trends. The course targets those who are interested in the fields related to Finance Banking, Development Studies, Transpt Logistic Applied data analysis. Duration: One Year (Coursewk min dissertation) i. A Degree from a recognized University with Economics as a subject ii. A Degree from a recognized University one year wk experience in a related field iii. A Professional qualification that will be recognised on a case by case basis, by the University of Colombo as equivalent to qualification at (i) (ii) above iv. Any other Diploma from a recognized University/ Institution an equivalent qualification recognized by the university with three years wk experience relevant to the subject areasof the Postgraduate Diploma. v. Diploma in Travel &Tourism Economics Hotel Management(DTTEHM): A multi-disciplinary diploma designed to meet the increasing dem f multi-skilled travel tourism professionals who are able to take responsibility f a wide range of complex industry processes by improving their knowledge through an interactive application-iented approachto face the challenges of the dynamic industry. The diploma provides practical analytical competence in socio-economic, ecological, marketing, managerial, accounting, infmation technological legal aspects of travel tourism industry.the course targets those who are already engaged in the travel tourism fields at different professional levels also those who aspire careers in the industry. Duration: One-year i. Three passes at the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examinations its equivalent. (Preference will be given to persons who possess adequate wk experience). ii. Three passes at the G.C.E. (dinary Level) Examination its equivalent have sufficient practical experience in the industry. iii. 7 8.Diploma in Microfinance (DMF) Microfinance is particularly imptant in promoting micro enterprises in developing countries like Sri Lanka where the mainstream financial institutions hesitate to provide financial facilities to many low income small entrepreneurs. Small enterprises have a critical role to play in transfming Sri Lanka into high/middle income country. The course targets those with an intermediate knowledge of microfinance who wish to deepen their conceptual analytical capabilities to meet career dems. Duration: One year, commencing in January, 2015 (classes will be conducted on Saturdays Sundays) Medium: Sinhala/English i. Three passes at the G.C.E (A/L) Examination its equivalent; (preference will be given to persons who possess relevant wk experience) OR ii. Professional qualification acceptable to the university as equivalent to (i) above. Course fee: Rs. 55, (Payment in two instalments) under the Ref. No Codinat: Dr. S. P.
