5 Windows Updates It is absolutely essential to make sure that Windows on your home computer is up to date

6 Setup Windows Updates By setting up Windows Updates to happen automatically you ensure that your home computer is completely up to date

7 Turn on Windows Firewall Windows Firewall is an important tool to block intruders from accessing your home computer

8 Safe Surfing Be sure never to input any personal information via the web unless the server is secure Avoid listing your for web registrations, as it could be triggered with spam Have a separate account Always close popups from the X in the top right corner Do not store your password! Always enter your username and password

9 Safe Surfing Before you post your own website, ask yourself, Do I need to provide all this information about myself and my family? Monitor your kids activity If there is any doubt.. Do not click!

10 Anti-Virus It is essential to have a virus protection program running on your home computer Symantec (Norton) Anti-Virus is available from the CHIP as part of their Home Security CD

11 Anti-Virus Make sure that you configure your anti-virus to download updates automatically

12 I have a virus!?!?! Check a reputable authority such as Symantec to find out what the virus does Google is an excellent resource for the unknown

13 Beware of Spies!!! If you do any amount of surfing on the web, then you will encounter popups How do I avoid popups? Do not surf the internet Download the google toolbar Install XP SP2 Popups are still bound to happen Do not click on them Use the X in the top right corner to get rid of them

15 Remote Desktop The Remote Desktop client allows a user to connect directly to a Windows XP computer It is paramount that you keep your home pc safe and secure so that it does not compromise your office pc and others that are on the network

16 How does RDP work? It is like you are sitting at your office pc but you are at home Using Remote Desktop, you can run applications on a remote computer running Windows XP Professional from any other client running a Microsoft Windows operating system.

17 How to run Remote Desktop You need to have your office pc setup for this service, by default it is not turned on If you are running Windows XP at home, look for the remote desktop connection through the menus Start Programs Accessories Communication Remote Desktop Client OR, go to Run - mstsc

19 Where is Remote Desktop??? Go to - Run then type in mstsc mstsc is the acronym for MicroSoft Terminal Services Client This is the quickest way to start an RDP session without having to navigate through the menus

25 Knowing your IP Address Why is it important to know your IP address and your computer name??? Allows you the option of connecting in different ways

26 Ipconfig /all The results of running ipconfig /all How do we interpret this information? Why is this important? Example you might not know how to fix your car but you at lest know the make, model and mileage.

32 So Slow If the remote session is too slow, try disabling some features that you don't need. You can reduce the color depth to 256 colors and disable such features as window animations or sound mapping to reduce the amount of information sent between the remote and local computers and increase performance. We strongly recommend that you disable printer mapping and drive mapping, which require a lot of bandwidth.

35 Hints Reboot your office PC regularly to minimize issues when connecting from home Remember to keep your PC on but do a restart on a regular basis Do not attempt to run RDP over a dialup connection. Understand how to remotely shutdown/restart your office PC from home. Be prepared to do some trouble shooting.

36 Plan/Prepare Take your documents home on a CD or USB memory stick as a backup. A lack of preparation on your part does not constitute an emergency on ours! Everyone s files are important!
