Chapter 3 Examination and Exam Requirements Article 3.1 Participants Obligations Attendance requirements The participant, once enrolled in the MBA program, is obliged to participate in all MBA courses of the MBA program, according to the schedule provided. The assessment of an individual participant s performance in the MBA program requires class attendance and participation in all class activities throughout the MBA program. Presence at educational activities may be part of an examination when announced along with its assessment norms in the course outline. Class attendance is compulsory and any absence from the class requires permission granted by the Local Administrator. Any form of absenteeism from class is to be reported to the Local Administrator in writing (letter, fax or message) plus the supporting documents e.g. medical certificate, prior to the absence. A participant attending less than 80% of the classes will not be allowed to take the final exam, which will lead to a No Pass for the respective examination. The participant will be required to take the resit examination, implying that the final grade for the subject will not exceed 5,5. A participant attending less than 60% of the classes, without a compelling reason and approval by the Local Administrator, has to repeat the entire course and cannot obtain an overall grade of more than 5,5 for the course. A participant who arrives after commencement of classes, will be requested to join the class after the break. Frequent class absence without prior notification and approval will be considered as negligent and irresponsible behavior and may be reported in the final confidential reports about the participant s performance to the interested parties, including the sponsor or the employer Participation requirements A participant is required to attend all classes and is expected to come to class prepared to participate actively in discussions. Given the constraints of time during the course, a participant is urged to conduct their prescribed readings ahead of class, and to arrive on time. The participant is obliged to participate in the teams designated as part of the courses of the MBA program (team discussions, team presentations and team assignments) and to take part in works visits, guest lectures and the in- and outbound tests scheduled as part of the MBA program. Participation in educational activities may be part of an examination when announced along with its assessment norms in the course outline Course Evaluations At the conclusion of each course, the participant will be required to assess the course through completing an online or hardcopy evaluation form. The course evaluation is confidential and anonymous. Article 3.2 (Resit) Examinations The respective examiner is authorized to administer and conduct examinations and to assess and determine (final) examination results. Each examination will involve the examiner testing the knowledge, application (insight) and skills of the participant with respect to a particular component of the overall assessment, and an assessment thereof. 9
An academic member proposed by the MSM Examination Board may review the examiner s assessment by taking a random sample from the written and oral examinations and/or assignments. This may result in the re-assessment of the associated examinations. An academic member might be assigned by the MSM Examination Board to assess written and oral examinations and/or assignments in cases of grade objection, quality control, course replacement, discontinuation, or similar cases of absence Written and Oral Examinations (First attempt) Examinations will be conducted orally, in writing, or otherwise as announced in the course outline, without prejudice to the MSM Examination Board competence to determine otherwise in exceptional cases. Written examination: The subject matter of the written examination of the course is defined in detail in the course outline, which shows what material covered in lectures, self-study and other parts of the course form the object of examination as well as the design and nature of the examination and the level of knowledge the participant is required to possess when participating in the exam. The examiner will prepare a three (3) hour final written examination and model answers with grading guidelines. The duration of the examination will be such that participants can be reasonably expected to have sufficient time to answer the questions. Unless stated otherwise in the course outline of the subject, all examinations are closed book and notes examinations. Examination questions shall be clear and unambiguous and such that participants can correctly judge how extensive and detailed their answer should be. The subject of the questions shall be representative of the whole of the course content. Model answers with grading guidelines will either be distributed simultaneous after the examination or upon request of the participant or during the examination review, unless decided otherwise by the examiner. Model answers consist of sample answers to examination questions, the weighting of marks of each question with regard to the overall examination score and determine the cut-off mark. The invigilators appointed for each examination are responsible for supervising the examination and for ensuring the examination proceeds in good order. Each participant must comply with the regulations during examinations. Please refer to Appendix II, Part 1. Failure to do so will lead to failing the respective part of the course. The participant consequently loses any rights with respect to clauses on examination scores. Oral examination: The MSM Examination Board could decide (in exceptional cases) that an oral examination may take place as method of examination. Besides the respective subject examiner and the participant, a second examiner will be present during the oral examination. Oral examinations are taken individually and open to the public, without prejudice to the MSM Examination Board competence to determine otherwise in exceptional cases Course assignments Usually course assignments (including but are not limited to individual or group assignment, case study, presentation and/or class participation) form a part of the examination for each course. Detailed information about the nature of these assignments and their grading is provided in the 10
course outline for each course, which will be provided to the participant before the beginning of the course. Without indications otherwise, assignments have to be submitted to the Local Administrator between 4:00 and 5:00 PM on the due date. Individual course examiners (lecturers) or other (MSM) staff members have no authority to relax deadlines, vary or waive (exemption) the course requirements for individual participants. Only the Local Administrator has the authority to do so. In case a participant fails to submit an assignment according to the deadlines set, and no permission of the Local Administrator was obtained in advance, the Local Administrator decides on the consequences, based on consultation with the course examiner. Late submissions of course assignments (first attempt), after the scheduled submission deadline, will be considered as a re-submission after a No Pass, implying that the final grade for the course will not exceed 5,5. Late submissions of resit course assignments (second attempt), after the scheduled re-submission deadline, will imply a Fail for the course. At the beginning of each academic year, a participant is requested to sign a declaration, which applies for all submitted assignments during the MBA program. The declaration states that: The work submitted had not previously been submitted for a degree at MSM or any other school or university, It is own work in design and execution and that all materials used for the work have been fully acknowledged, The participant is aware of and understands the MSM principles and procedures with regard to academic misconduct (specifically the policy with regard to fraud, plagiarism, forgery and academic outsourcing) and the consequences of acting against them, The work submitted is free of any kind of plagiarism, forgery or academic outsourcing, The participant understands the school s research ethics and plagiarism, forgery and academic outsourcing policies, If plagiarism, forgery or academic outsourcing should be found after the degree is awarded, Maastricht School of Management reserves the right to recall the degree and declare it null and void Resit Examinations (Second attempt) A resit of an examination entails the second (2) attempt for a participant to take an examination facilitated for all examinations or parts thereof, with the exception of the examination requirements of course assignments, presentations and practicals. A third (3) attempt is considered by the MSM Examination Board only with respect to special personal circumstances Taking written or oral examinations and course assignments A participant is obliged to take the examinations as scheduled for the MBA program and to write the assignments and hand them in as scheduled for the MBA program. If due to a valid reason beyond his or her control the participant is unable to take the scheduled examination or hand in an assignment, a written statement setting forth the reasons for this plus any supporting documents e.g. medical certificate must be promptly submitted to the Local Administrator. If the compelling reason exists in advance, the written statement must be submitted at the latest one (1) day before the examination takes place or before the submission deadline of the assignment. The Local Administrator will approve or disapprove the matter. A first unapproved omission to take a scheduled examination will be recorded as a grade of No Pass. A definite grade of Fail will be recorded if the participant, after receiving a No Pass grade, fails to take the resit examination of the course. The same holds for (re-take) assignments and their (re-)submission deadlines. Any case of an unapproved omission to take an examination or hand-in an assignment will be reported to the MSM Examination Board. 11
Article 3.3 Special examinations for disabled participants Applicability For the purpose of creating equal opportunities regarding examination possibilities, the MSM Examination Board may decide to adopt and apply individual examination regulations, suited to the individual situations of the following categories of participants: Physically or otherwise impaired participants; Requirements If applicable at the time of admission, it is required that an applicant submits a written statement by their home university or college, or doctor at the time of applying for the program. The statement should specify the disability and the necessary adjustments. In the case of examination a participant needs to submit a written request in order to be eligible for the appliance of individual examination regulations as mentioned in clause 1 of this article Consultation of experts Before reaching a decision, the MSM Examination Board may consult an expert on the matter of the case. Article 3.4 Examination periods and dates Course and Examination amount periods MBA program In the MBA program courses are taught within a modular periods. The written or oral examination of a course will be conducted, as a rule before the start of the next module. Teaching and examination periods may differ per Partner Institute. Please refer to the website of MSM ( or the website of the MSM Partner Institutions for the teaching periods of the MBA program in collaboration with Partner Institutions Resit examination A resit examination of a course will be arranged as required in conformity with the examination stipulations. A period of at least two (2) to eight (8) weeks is reserved (after the participants are notified about the examination results of the first attempt) before the resit examination takes place. The resit examinations will be duly announced to the participants. Article 3.5 Master Thesis Master Thesis The Master Thesis is a written paper or report of empirical or theoretical research in connection with a practical or theoretical topic in one (1) area of specialization of the MBA program. The research is to result in a written paper, in which the specific problem formulation is elaborated following the MSM MBA Thesis Guidelines, methodologically worked out by means of adequate research data and a relevant framework. 12
a. The thesis supervisor needs to approve the final Master Thesis by filling out and submitting the Thesis Evaluation form with the Local Administrator, before the participant is allowed to submit the final Master Thesis. The participant, and not the thesis supervisor, is responsible for the content of the Master Thesis. Any approval from a thesis supervisor is no guarantee for a successful thesis defense. b. The participant is required to submit the (approved) Master Thesis before the submission deadline scheduled by MSM and the Local Administrator. c. Upon handing in the Master Thesis, a participant is requested to sign a declaration stating that: The work submitted had not previously been submitted for a degree at MSM or any other school or university, It is own work in design and execution and that all materials used for the work have been fully acknowledged, The participant is aware of and understands the MSM principles and procedures with regard to academic misconduct (specifically the policy with regard to fraud, plagiarism, forgery and academic outsourcing) and the consequences of acting against them, The work submitted is free of any kind of plagiarism, forgery or and academic outsourcing, The participant understands the school s research ethics and plagiarism, forgery and academic outsourcing policies, If plagiarism, forgery or academic outsourcing should be found after the degree is awarded, Maastricht School of Management reserves the right to recall the degree and declare it null and void Research Progress Reports During the thesis writing process, the participant and the thesis supervisor will both fill out and sign the research progress report form (twice). The objective of these research progress reports is to detect and resolve any difficulties (between the thesis supervisor and the participant or related processes) during the thesis writing process. Should any difficulties emerge during the writing process, the supervisor or participant will inform the Local Administrator, which then considers the matter and proposes and implement a solution. A participant needs the approval of the thesis supervisor before being permitted to submit the Master Thesis Master Thesis Defense After approval of the Master Thesis by the thesis supervisor, the Master Thesis must be presented and defended by the participant at the scheduled thesis defense date viva voce in front of a Thesis Examination Board. One (1) external evaluator is appointed by MSM and one (1) by the MSM Partner Institute for the Thesis Examination Board. The participant s supervisor(s) has an advisory role in this Thesis Examination Board. The final decision on the grade for the Master Thesis and defense is with the external evaluator appointed by MSM. Thesis defense sessions are organized at the end of each MBA program. MSM in consultation with the Local Administrator may schedule additional defense sessions for those who have deferred and/or not passed, and paid the corresponding additional fees. Please refer to Appendix III: Financial Conditions. The Master Thesis shall be assessed and documented through the completion of a thesis evaluation form. All external evaluators need to complete each facet of the thesis evaluation form with a specific grade and justifying comments. The assessment will take place in such a way that participants will be able to verify how their Master Thesis results were determined. Further detailed guidelines and grading issues are laid down in the MSM MBA Thesis Guidelines distributed during the Research Methods or Thesis Writing Workshops. The MSM Examination Board may review the Master Thesis and thesis evaluation form (assessment) of the external evaluator by taking a random sample from defended theses, in 13
cases of grade objection and the purpose of quality control. This may result in the re-assessment of the associated Master Thesis. a. In case the participant misses the submission deadline, (s)he is not allowed to defend and (s)he is considered to have received a No Pass for the Master Thesis (including defense). b. If for some compelling reason beyond his or her control the participant is unable to hand in the Master Thesis before the submission deadline or defend the Master thesis on the proposed day, a written statement setting forth the reasons must be promptly submitted to the Local Administrator. If the compelling reason exists in advance, the written statement must be submitted at the latest one (1) day before the submission deadline or proposed defense date. MSM will approve or disapprove the request in consultation with the Local Administrator. c. In case the thesis was handed in before the submission deadline, but does not receive an approval by the supervisor, the participant is not allowed to defend, but considered to have received a No Pass for his Master Thesis (including defense). This decision can be contested with the MSM Examination Board within one (1) week by stating the reasons for disagreement in writing. d. Once the Master Thesis is handed in on time and approved by the supervisor, a participant is obliged to defend the Master Thesis scheduled at the proposed date for his or her program of study. e. A participant obliged to defend, who does not show up at defense or who is not willing to defend the Master Thesis, is considered to have received a No Pass for the Master Thesis (including defense). f. If a participant receives a No Pass for the Master Thesis he (s)he has to re-submit an improved Master Thesis after incorporating the recommendations from the panel members or go through the whole thesis process again (entirely new Master Thesis). g. The re-submission deadline for the Master Thesis is usually within six (6) months after the first Master Thesis submission deadline or the thesis defense date (first attempt) of the attending program. h. After having received a No Pass for the Master Thesis, the participant is required to resubmit the Master Thesis before the re-submission deadline scheduled by MSM in consultation with the Local Administrator. i. In case the participant misses the re-submission deadline, (s)he is not allowed to defend and (s)he is considered to have received a Fail for the Master Thesis (including defense). j. If for some compelling reason beyond his or her control the participant is unable to hand in the Master Thesis before the re-submission deadline or defend the Master Thesis on the proposed day (resit defense), a written statement setting forth the reasons must be promptly submitted to the Local Administrator. If the compelling reason exists in advance, the written statement must be submitted at the latest one (1) day before the resubmission deadline or proposed defense date (resit defense). MSM will approve or disapprove the request in consultation with the Local Administrator. k. In case the thesis was handed in before the re-submission deadline, but does not receive an approval by the supervisor, the participant is not allowed to defend, but considered to have received a Fail for the Master Thesis (including defense). This decision can be contested with the MSM Examination Board within one (1) week by stating the reasons for disagreement in writing. l. After receiving a No Pass for the Master Thesis only one (1) re-submission of the Master Thesis is allowed. The maximum grade for the Master Thesis (including defense) will be 5,5 (on the transcript). Hence after a Fail for the Master Thesis the participant is considered to have failed the entire MBA program. Article 3.6 Prerequisites Master Thesis In principle, a participant is only allowed to submit (provided the Master Thesis is approved by the thesis supervisor) and defend the Master Thesis, after all courses of the program have been successfully completed. Only the MSM Academic Coordinator can deviate from this rule. 14
Article 3.7 Personal Circumstances Personal circumstances (distress) leading to non-compliance with these regulations (including but are not limited to any form of absenteeism from class, not meeting the submission deadline of course assignments or Master Thesis, not taking examinations as scheduled for the MBA program, exceeding the maximum number of resits and failed courses etc.) should be reported to the Local Administrator, by submitting a written motivated statement, including the supporting documents e.g. medical certificate or other evidence, as soon as they occur. Personal circumstances leading to not meeting the required deadlines and standards for the Master Thesis, may constitute a precondition for the MSM Examination Board to extend the time frame set for the Master Thesis with a maximum of three (3) months, based on a positive advice from the Local Administrator. Article Definition Personal circumstances that may qualify are (a) a participant s illness, (b) extraordinary family circumstances, (c) the participant s physical, sensorial or other functional disorder; (d) the participant s pregnancy. a. Extraordinary family circumstances In order for extraordinary family circumstances to be regarded as the aforementioned precondition: - the participant must have notified the Local Administrator, as soon as his/her extraordinary family circumstances occurred or at the latest one (1) day before a deadline, as the cause of failing to comply with these regulations for the MBA program; and - the participant must have provided proof of or means of the occurrence of extraordinary family circumstances. - if the participant cannot meet the final requirement, (s)he needs to contact the Local Administrator. c. Participant s physical, sensorial or other functional disorder In order for the participant s physical, sensorial or other functional disorder to be regarded as the aforementioned precondition: - the participant must have reported the physical, sensorial or other functional disorder to the Local Administrator at the start of his/her studies, or as soon as the physical, sensorial or other functional disorder occurred or at the latest one (1) day before a deadline. - if the participant cannot meet the final requirement, the participant is required to contact the Local Administrator. d. Participant s pregnancy In order for the participant s pregnancy to be regarded as the aforementioned precondition: - the participant must have reported her pregnancy to the Local Administrator; and 15
- the participant must have submitted a statement from the attending physician or midwife with a confirmation of her pregnancy or a birth certificate. - if the participant cannot meet the final requirement she needs to contact the Local Administrator. Article 3.8 Assessment and notification of (resit) examination results Assessment Written (resit) examination A written (resit) examination in any form will be assessed and graded by an examiner appointed by the MSM Examination Board. Before assessing and grading the examination scripts these will be anonymized. For every written (resit) examination, an assessment norm is determined and stated on the examination paper. The assessment will take place in such a way that participants will be able to verify how their examination results were determined Assessment Oral (resit) examination An oral (resit) examination (only in exceptional cases) will be assessed and graded by an examiner appointed by the MSM Examination Board. For every oral (resit) examination an assessment norm is determined and made available by the examiner. The oral (resit) examination shall be assessed and documented through a short report written by the examiner with the questions asked by the examiner, a summary of the answers given by the participant and the way in which grades are calculated (given marks per question) Assessment Course (resit) assignment A course (resit) assignment in any form will be assessed and graded by an examiner appointed by the MSM Examination Board. For every course (resit) assignment, an assessment norm is determined and made available by the examiner. The assessment will take place in such a way that participants will be able to verify how their results were determined Examination Scores (first attempt) Usually written and oral examinations account for 60% of the final grade for a subject and course assignments (including presence and participation) account for 40% of the final grade for a subject. At the consent of the MSM Academic Coordinator other weights or evaluation methods may be used for written and oral examinations and course assignments. If applicable, class participation may be considered as part of the course assignment (as long as the assessment of the participation in class is transparent). A maximum of 40% of the course assignment could be allocated to class participation. Grades are given on a scale from 0,0 to 10,0, accurate to one (1) decimal place or qualified as a No Pass or Fail in accordance with this article. For all Examinations (written and oral examinations, course assignments and Master Thesis), a grade of 5,5 or higher is considered a Pass. 18 The grading scale from 0,0 to 10,0, as applied by MSM, is to be interpreted as below. MSM Grading Scale Grade Meaning Grade 10,0 Exceptional 9,5 9,9 Excellent 9,0 9,4 Excellent 8,5 8,9 Very good 8,0 8,4 Very good 7,5 7,9 Good 7,0 7,4 Good 6,5 6,9 Satisfactory 6,0 6,4 Satisfactory 5,5 5,9 Sufficient < 5,5 Insufficient Unless stated otherwise, in standard written and oral examinations and course assignments, MSM has defined the following criteria for Pass and No Pass : Pass: The final grade for a subject is 5,5 or higher and the written or oral examination and course assignment are 5,5 or higher. All of these activities are interrelated as educational and learning processes for the MSM staff as well as the participants. Master of Business Administration (MBA) The MBA programs conducted in Maastricht and in more than 15 locations worldwide reflect MSM s teaching philosophy which is geared towards developing globally-minded business leaders and managers who can respond and adapt to new trends in the business world, especially in emerging economies and their business relations with the rest of the world, including dealing with sustainability and inclusiveness on societal level. The MBA program delivered in collaboration with MSM Partner Institutions and their duration varies per Institute from 12 to 30 months. The MBA curriculum that consists of 70 ECTS credits in total is divided into different segments: Functional Core (Foundation and Core Segment), Integration and Specialization segment. The MBA program that consists of 80 ECTS credits in total is divided into four segments: Foundation, Core, Specialization and Performance segment. Official tests, written examinations and course assignments are part of the Foundation, Core and Specialization segments. 32
Program Setup of the MBA program 70 ECTS and 80 ECTS The MBA programs of MSM are targeted towards mid-career professionals with the aim to advance their knowledge and practice of management and to challenge them to lead in a dynamic global business environment. Participants already have work experience on a managerial level and are looking to enhance their careers. The average age of participants is years. Specializations offered in the MBA program in collaboration with Partner Institutions currently include (but are not necessarily limited to): Sustainability, Banking & Finance, Marketing Management, General and Strategic Management, Other specializations agreed upon with Partner Institutions. MSM is also working on introducing new specializations: Energy Management, Retail Banking, Health care management, Business and Law. Financial Management (called Finance in the 70 ECTS curriculum) This is a foundation course designed to expose the participants to the various techniques available to assist management and to arrive at optimal financial decisions within a firm, including those of investment and working capital, financing and capital structure as well as dividend distribution. MBA foundation courses in Accounting and Economics as well as Quantitative Techniques are prerequisites. Accounting for managers 1 (Financial Accounting) Financial Accounting is a foundation course and provides the future manager with the essential knowledge and skills in accounting that will guide informed decisions about the short-term operations of the firm and enable the manager to monitor the financial situation and take corrective action. Accounting for managers 2 (Management Accounting) This course introduces Management Accounting as a tool for management decision-making, planning and control. The behavior of costs and cost-volume-profit relationships are studied analytically but at a basic level from management perspectives in relation to activity changes. The use of accounting information for short-term management production and marketing decisionmaking, including price determination, is explored in the context of recent developments. Management accounting and long-term investment decisions are equally dealt with. Accounting for Managers (combined course of AFM 1 and 2 for the 70 ECTS curriculum) The aim of this course is to introduce accounting to students. Accounting comprises financial accounting and management accounting. Both forms of accounting rely on information extracted from the financial information system. Recent accounting scandals in companies like Enron, Parmalat and Ahold have illustrated the importance of providing reliable information about the performance of a company. As financial statements are the key source of information for both financial and management accountants, we will first deal with the methods that financial accounting uses to produce an annual report. Then, we will have a closer look at management accounting. Management accounting requires information extracted from the financial information system. A financial information system deals with the processing of the flow of data on business activities into financial statements. The nature of information in financial statements depends on the information needs of the users. Therefore attention is being paid to acquire skills needed to provide information to users. 33
Managerial Economics The course aims at enabling participants to understand the economic environment, both on the micro and on the macro level, with a view on incorporating this knowledge into strategic managerial decision-making. Building on basic economic principles such as opportunity costs and rational decision-making principles, the course will apply managerial economics concepts to real world problems such as demand analysis, pricing and output decisions, and strategic analyses of various competitive settings. The impact of the macroeconomic environment on managerial decision-making is explored by studying business cycle dynamics, inflationary and deflationary processes, financial market influences and long-term growth prospects Business in the Global Arena This course is designed to give the participants a detailed and thorough understanding of the global environment business is confronted with in 21 st century. The major driving forces of globalization in the global economy are analyzed and their impact on nations, business and people is discussed. In particular the course investigates the causes of economic wealth and poverty, the potential and limits of national economic policy making in a financially globalized economy, the determinant and consequences of international trade and investment, and the role of national and international trade policies. On the base of this acquired knowledge, participants will analyze how globalization of trade, investment and finance affects competitive advantages of major global industries in practice. Economics for Managers (combined course of ME and BGA for the 70 ECTS curriculum) This course is about market places. The microeconomic part examines consumers, firms and workers within markets, seeking to understand why prices change for particular products, what influences costs and what will influence a firm s profitability. The macroeconomic part looks at the whole economy as one large market and discusses how governments might manage the entire economy to deliver stable economic growth. The discussion will also focus on current topics such as the managing of national debt and the implementation of austerity packages. Global Corporate Strategy Strategic management seeks to answer the basic and simple question: why are some firms able to enjoy the benefits of developing and maintaining competitive advantages in the marketplace while others are not? In the course we address this question. To do so, we examine the five interrelated and principal activities that are part of the overall strategic management process: Strategic thinking, strategy analysis, strategy formulation, strategy implementation and strategy evaluation and control. Attention is also given to the many forces driving change in modern business. Of primary importance among these are the accelerating change of globalization and technology, and the emergence of knowledge as the primary source of value creation. This course provides the framework necessary for developing and implementing of a strategy in corporations. Marketing in a Global context International Marketing, once a topic of interest only to those few participants who sought careers in international business, is now a subject with which every business participant, regardless of career goals, should be familiar. The trend is for global markets to be sought after by businesses from all across the world. Completion on world markets will continue to intensify, thus decreasing the number of companies that operate solely in domestic markets. Indeed, globalization and technological innovation, e-commerce, have opened new opportunities for businesses ranging from one-person operations to corporate giants. With a viable product or service the smallest business can now find potential customers and means of distribution across the globe. The basic aims and objectives of this course are to enable participants to apply international marketing techniques to both small and medium-sized enterprises as well as large international corporations. The emphasis in this course is also on exporting, given its position as the major international activity of small and medium-sized enterprises and its extensive use by virtually all global companies. 34
Global Supply Chain Management The main objective of course, is to introduce that integrated approach of flow of goods, information and services from suppliers to customers. Issues discussed are supplier relationships, inventory management, logistics and transportation, distribution and customer service. The term integrated process is emphasized in this module as opposed to silo approach. As such, every issue in each area is being discussed and analyzed in the context of integrated flows of goods and services from suppliers to customers and the continuous flows of information (typically) from the customers to the suppliers. Emphasis is further placed on how to structure, organize and manage global supply chains and networks efficiently and effectively, particularly in the competitive context of today. Innovation and New Business Ventures Our key objective is to generate within participants minds, an understanding of what it takes to get a new venture established, and to grow the business so that the entrepreneur both retains operational control, and yet is able to pursue the highest growth path available to the business. It is an important objective that participants gain a feeling of confidence and pride in setting out alone down an uncertain road; a road full of future promise and challenge. A further important objective is to harness all of the participant's existing knowledge and experience, both academic and practical, towards the development of a realistic, ambitious and achievable business plan which has a high chance of success in practice. A further aim of the course is to encourage participants to take their new business idea, and use it as the basis for a new career as a successful entrepreneur Leadership Change and Responsibility (called Leadership Change and Organization in the 70 ECTS curriculum) This course is about the dynamics related to the human dimension of an organization. Increasingly, organizations have to deal with challenges which require leadership, both from remarkable individuals and from the average employee. More specifically, those challenges relate to the increasing dynamics within markets, societies and technologies; dynamics that are confusing and threatening, and thus call for vision and direction. However, this new reality also offers opportunities to those who can manage to deal with change in a constructive way. The relevance of this course lies mainly in the increasing need for managers to answer demands which were not traditionally an element in their previous managerial roles. Not so long ago, a manager was not supposed to be a leader, (s)he only occasionally worried about change and left society behind as (s)he entered the company s premises. Not so now. Today managers have to work under new responsibilities and challenges, showing leadership, and a sense of responsibility. Corporate Responsibility and Ethics (new course for the 70 ECTS curriculum) Ethics deals with values, norms and standards that we both individually and collectively apply to our behaviour and our activities. In a global society the debate about these values, norms and standards is necessary in order to (prosperously) co-exist and contribute to a life worth living. An open dialogue is also if not predominantly required for economic arena, where different stakeholders might have different views on the responsibilities of corporations, investors, governments and the civil society. The main objective of the course is to familiarise students with an ethical orientation toward the worlds of business and investment. Using theories, concrete examples, videos, cases and the like, students learn to analyze ethical, corporate responsibility and responsible investment issues. Students are expected to actively participate in discussions and other work forms. Managing Cultural Diversity Teams or groups at work are recognized as powerful human arrangement and when operated effectively can produce great synergy and creativity over and above that which is achievable by individuals when operating in isolation. This module provides the knowledge required and the processes necessary to assure effectiveness in team dynamics. 35
Global Business Landscapes (new course for the 70 ECTS curriculum) The Global Business Landscapes are a series of workshops where students for the full-time programme will meet to share their diverse business experiences. The workshops are in the form of a global café where by students are divided into groups and asked to discuss a specific management theme relation to their own experiences. These themes will vary and will be related to topics such as CSR, Leadership, Ethics, the Market and the State, dealing with constrained resources, and change and innovation. (Business) Statistics This course focuses on the role statistics play as a tool for decision-making. It prepares the participants to be informed users of research results, interpreting them and drawing conclusions. Furthermore, the course emphasizes issues such as problem definition, research methods and the critical appraisal of quantitative information. The statistical methods to be used in project management, forecasting, marketing research, production and operations management, quality control, accounting, financing and managing other business processes are introduced and explored. Finance in International Markets The text materials and cases of this course will focus on monetary policies, the international monetary system, capital markets, financial institutions, short- and long-term financing, this indepth knowledge of finance in the broad sense will equip the manager with the essential knowledge and insights needed to operate in international markets. Specialization: Corporate Strategy and Economic Policy Corporate Restructuring The restructuring and turnaround process requires a systematic framework at the enterprise level to address issues of adaptation in the context of micro economic, industry sectors, and the international competitive environment. The framework covers a number of dimensions and will be applicable to both private and public enterprises, aiding in identifying critical constraints, while at the same time acting as a planning tool for implementing restructuring operations. Thus the course on Corporate Restructuring is of an applied nature and provides a comprehensive overview of the process of enterprise restructuring and turnaround. Economic Policy and Implementation The course aims to provide participants with the necessary analytical tools and conceptual framework for understanding, analyzing, and forecasting key macroeconomic variables in a developing market-oriented economy (DME). Specifically, the course will focus on economic growth, inflation and the balance of payments, elaborating on the meaning of each of these concepts, explaining why an understanding of them is essential for business decision makers, and indicating how one can understand and predict the movement of these variables in respect of specific DMEs. As a precursor to the study of the macroeconomic dynamics of a DME in general, the course will look in some depth at the standard aggregate demand and aggregate supply framework conventionally utilized to provide an understanding of these issues. This will be done along with a review of some basic microeconomic concepts and tools. Strategic Management of Technology & Innovation Technological change and innovation are major drivers of competition and corporate success. They essentially alter the existing parameters of operation of markets and industries, sometimes fundamentally, strengthening or eroding the position of leading corporations, propelling to prosperity otherwise unknown firms and establishing different conditions and environments for all businesses and consumers. The course therefore focuses on the links between new product and process creation and company strategy. It also examines the technical, physical, organizational, human and financial requirements of innovation. It concentrates on analyzing the process of devising, implementing and evaluating successful and failed commercialization of new products and of adoption of new technologies. Finally, it assesses the impact innovation has on corporate performance. This is not, however, a 'technical' course. It does not address the engineering 36
dimension of technology but rather how to mobilize scientific and engineering knowledge and skills and available machinery and equipment for innovation and technical change. Advanced Corporate Strategy The ACS course provides participants the opportunity to dig deeper into strategy concepts and strategy development, and to apply these concepts in case studies and in the context of their professional development. This course challenges the participants to dig deeper into the background of the different schools of thought in strategic management. It challenges participants to become more explicit and critical on their own assumptions and preferences in analyzing and using strategy concepts to deal with strategic issues. The rapid development of technology and its impact on how business is being conducted is becoming more prominent in strategy literature. From the introduction of the desktop computer in the 80s, the rise of the Internet and mobile telephony in the 90s, to social media s rising impact on both business and society in the present day, we will critically examine the implications of technology s relevance in strategy in both theoretical and practical terms. The rise of new business models related to sustainability and shared value will be addressed. In recent years, the concept of sustainability has morphed from being a buzzword limited to a few companies implementing green measures and used primarily as a marketing tool to the present day where the majority of companies view sustainability as a necessary differentiator that can benefit both community and the bottom line. Specialization: Accounting and Finance Advanced Financial Accounting The course is intended to present the advanced topics of Financial Accounting. These topics include the issues of consolidation and presentation of the consolidated financial statement after considering and eliminating all intra-economic entity transactions. It deals with the different methods of reporting the inter-corporate interests as well the different methods of presenting the consolidated statements. Further, it deals with the multinational transactions and how to record international and foreign currency transactions in the financial books. Finally, the issues of partnership in terms of formation, operations, changes in the membership, allocation of profits, and liquidation are an integral part of the course. Strategic Management Accounting The course equip participants with the knowledge of how business strategy can be incorporated into Management Accounting to enhance a firm s competitive position. Besides critical analysis of concepts of cost, cost structure and cost behaviour, the course also discusses the importance of, and approach to, costing competitors in order to determine relative competitive position. It examines problems of performance evaluation from financial and non-financial viewpoints, including activity-based costing, total quality management and cost of quality as a competitive weapons. Issues relating to the provision of relevant accounting information to management will be analysed, including the balanced scorecard and activity-based costing. Configured in a way which shows how such information can be used for strategy formulation. Portfolio Management The intent of the course is to develop the participant s ability to deal with the problem of investing in the stock market and in the bond market with the intent of building a portfolio which satisfies their needs and objectives. During the learning process of explaining the elements of the investment theory and the required three-step analysis of the economy, market, industry, focus will be made on the process of evaluating a company to arrive at the value of the stock in the market, and whether the stock is undervalued or overvalued for investment purposes. In addition, participants will be exposed to understanding the different strategies in investing in the bond market, and the strategies for investment in value versus growth stocks. Investment Banking After the 2008 global financial crisis which originated in the USA financial industry and the subsequent global economic downturn, almost everybody in investment banking wanted each investment banking function to be reexamined very carefully with the goal to reshape if not redefine it as well finding ways of doing it better. This course is a very broad overview of 37
investment banking with emphasis on the functions that are performed and how they are carried out in a competitive domestic and global environment. Attention will be given to the techniques and approaches which are used to execute some of the principal functions in investment banking with special attention to activities and risks which have brought this industry to the brink of disaster. Specialization: Management of Information Systems Management Information Systems New technologies are changing the fundamental ways of conducting business: providing customer service and developing, producing, marketing and distributing products and services. That raises issues affecting all functions and departments within an organisation. Managers and executives are challenged here because distribution and communications channels are being disrupted and transformed. Newer information systems (IS) are not only assisting organisations to become more efficient and reduce costs, they are also enabling them to become more effective and increase service levels, and helping them to gain competitive advantage. It has become paramount that IS can only provide true solutions when not only technology but also the structure, processes, culture and people and their roles are addressed. On one hand the above implies that managers and executives should understand and be able to analyse information in their organisations, that they should know the concepts of systems and their methodologies and possess the skills to integrate those concepts into the organisational structure. On the other hand, it implies that managers and executives should understand what changes in structure, processes, culture and roles are required to benefit most from the new technologies, it implies that they should understand the critical factors for success of IS and IS related projects. This course aims at building such deep understanding by applying IS related analytical frameworks to relevant cases. E-Business Technology Due to increasing emphasis on transaction costs, performance, and flexibility of information systems, networks, and the increasing complexity of applications, managers have to understand the logical structure and physical implementation issues of modern Internet-based technology. This is a critical success factor to the e-business strategy formulation and implementation. Both software and hardware issues will be addressed. The course provides participants with necessary inputs to shape the enterprise s IS and e-business technology architecture. Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management Recently, an exceptional trend has brought up new business intelligence development that determines how businesses operate in internet-based information environment. It is certainly no surprise that data accuracy, information relevancy, knowledge timelessness and bright wisdom are becoming issues which do not require additional emphasis in order to understand and gain proper insights in business problems, system dynamics, decision making, problem solving, thus reducing uncertainties and avoiding risks; the course tries to shed light on information infrastructures underlying web enterprises today. IT Strategy, Management and Change The rapid advances of information technology imply significant opportunities and threats to organisations, providing important support for many firms business strategies, creating new strategic choices. Current developments in information technology and in the business world trigger IT-enabled business transformations in terms of business process redesign, business networks, and business scope redefinition in (and between) organizations. Alignment of Business and IT Strategies has become a crucial issue here. Managers and executives are challenged to play a role in managing resources and defining strategy for IT and E-Business. Besides this they are required to play a challenging role as transformational leaders. The course on IT Management, Strategy, and Change addresses major issues in IT-enabled business transformation including the strategic alignment process. It examines fundamental impact of information on every aspect of business and value chain. It explores virtual integration as a generic e-business model. The course also seeks to apply systems thinking to understand the 38
dynamics of change in business transformation. The course uses highly participative class discussions and case-method for rich experiential learning. Specialization: International Business International Marketing & Services Management The objective of this course is to supplement basic marketing and marketing strategy courses by focusing on problems and strategies specific to marketing of services. Problems commonly encountered in marketing services -- such as difficulty in controlling quality, managing service failure and recovery situations and an inability to inventory -- will be addressed. Strategies used by successful services marketers to overcome these difficulties will be discussed. By participating in this course, participants will: recognize the similarities and differences between the marketing of services and goods; critically analyze service-related issues faced by real companies and offer viable solutions and gain a deeper appreciation of the number and extent of their own service encounters. International Business Studies The international dimension (changes in comparative and competitive advantage, integration of markets and globalization, government policies) is becoming increasingly important for business activities within Europe and worldwide. The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the strategies pursued by firms and the factors underlying their competitiveness in an international context. The nature and scope of international strategies and operations are examined in the earlier part of the course. This is followed by an examination of aspects of international business and competitiveness across different nations, the implications of increasing economic integration in Europe and consideration of the importance of national and international policies on multinational enterprises for business strategies. International Strategic Alliances Cooperative business ventures have been increasing in numbers for some time; they are known by many names--joint ventures, partnerships, strategic alliances, consortia, and coalitions. Everywhere, firms are joining forces to do what they could not do as well alone. The art of collaboration has become central to competitive strategy in many global industries. As a consequence, managers and government officials need to rethink how they conduct business and set economic policy, and we need to look upon our model of the corporation and of competition in a different light. To understand this revolution in global business, we will examine what alliances are, why companies use them, how they are designed and managed, and what effects the spread of cooperation has had on competition. We will use case studies and conceptual readings to develop a framework for understanding and managing alliances. Among the topics covered are: The reasons behind the rise of alliances, The role of alliances in competitive strategy, Designing alliances, including choice of partner and of structure, Managing alliances over their lifetime, Competing in multi- firm "constellations" and networks, Organizational challenges of managing constellations of allies. Globalization and Economic Development GED focuses on issues of economic development, in an era of increased economic, political and cultural linkages between countries. The emphasis however will be on economic aspects. Much of the contents of the course draw on the classic theories and temporary models as described by Todaro and Smith (2009). Like Todaro and Smith, the approach will be problem and policy oriented. However, there are also differences. First of all, the course will discuss how the contemporary models discussed in the textbook are related to several popular concepts, like in particular the concept of international competitiveness. Secondly, the course will zoom in on the concept of industry building, and on how governments do (or can, or should) intervene in that 39
process. As the role of government differs from one region or one country to the other, a fundamental question to be addressed is the role of government per se. Thirdly rather than looking at generic solutions to challenges of economic development the aim will be to find feasible solutions to specific cases (e.g. how to promote the tea industry of Rwanda? How can India sustain its leading edge in the software industry? How can Kenya tap into that very same market, taken into consideration advantages and disadvantages in cost structures and skills? And, interestingly, how can it be that one of the best performing national teams in soccer prospers despite a faltering national competition?) In sum, that is, the course will address the phenomenon of market imperfections; and what can be done to correct them, or at least mitigate their consequences. Master Thesis Research Methods In this course, a participant is trained in the key features and main stages of academic research, literature search and review, the main research strategies available, research ethics (i.e. plagiarism, paraphrasing and referencing) and academic writing. The Research Methods course prepares a participant in drafting their 3-page and 10-page Research Proposal, which need to be presented and defended successfully in order to proceed with their MBA thesis research project. As such, the Research Methods course is critical to their thesis work, but also for other course projects.. Master Thesis To complete the program, the participant must write a Master Thesis on an individual basis and defend it successfully. The Master Thesis offers a unique opportunity to analyze and reflect relevant parts of the participant s own firm or organization and to reach at new insights thanks to theory, discussions with fellow participants and faculty and empirical evidence. The objectives of the Master Thesis are to select and articulate a business problem, develop a framework within which to analyze the problem and provide meaningful recommendations for management. 40

A participant who obstructs teaching, study, the administration of MSM or of MSM Partner Institutions, or the performance of a member of MSM or of MSM Partner Institutions, will be liable to disciplinary action decided by the Dean Director. 1. Academic Misconduct Dishonesty and unfair practices may include deceit or misrepresentation in attempting to influence one s admission into the MBA program, or obtain a particular grade, or gain an improper advantage in an academic evaluation, representing another person s work or idea as one s own (plagiarism), unauthorized assistance in coursework and assignments, failure to comply with the examination rules, academic outsourcing, use of any services of professional organizations and individuals for producing a Master Thesis or data, examination and thesis mal-practices, falsification of documents, improper research practices, cheating (exam fraud), forgery in research, fabrication of data, using unlicensed programs or copying software without proper authorization, and purposefully evading or assisting other participants to evade accepted academic policies. 2. Non-Academic Misconduct Non-academic misconduct includes but is not limited to the following: vandalism or destruction of property, disorderly conduct, violence and threat of bodily harm, theft and stolen property, misuse of information technology and MSM Intranet facility, using unlicensed programs or copying software without proper authorization, interfering with the MSM or MSM Partner Institutions computer equipment, network and programs, falsification and misrepresentation, tampering with safety alarms, disobedience, false identification, possession of drugs or narcotics, possession of weapons in the building, harassment, sexual harassment, racial and religious harassment, sexual assault, hazing, stalking, and misuse of the MSM name or the name of MSM Partner Institutions. 3. Respect for Others A participant has an obligation to maintain a learning and community aware environment that is humane, fair, and socially responsible. This includes behavior that is consistent with equal treatment without regard to age, citizenship status, color, disability, marital or parental status, national origin, sex or sexual orientation, race, or religion. This has been clearly indicated in part 1 of the constitution of The Netherlands. Conduct that interferes with the rights of another or creates an atmosphere of intimidation or disrespect is inconsistent with the environment of learning and cooperation that MSM or a MSM Partner Institution requires. (Sexual) harassment, which includes all types of inappropriate (sexual) advances, verbal or physical, will not be tolerated. 47
4. Disciplinary Actions Academic or non-academic misconduct will have one or more of, but is not limited to, the following consequences. The MSM Examination Board may reach the decision to impose any of the following sanctions or a combination thereof upon the participant, depending on the gravity of the academic misconduct: a. Reprimand/official warning, b. Place on probation, c. Complete or partial voidance or annulment of the relevant examination, d. Exclusion/ Suspension from participation or further participation of one or more examinations or other school activities for a period of time to be determined by the MSM Examination Board, with a maximum period of one (1) year, e. Propose immediate expulsion from the MBA program to the Dean Director. The Dean Director may reach the decision to impose any of the following sanctions or a combination thereof upon the participant: a. Expulsion on an either temporary (one (1) cycle) or permanent basis, b. Payment of repairs and damage costs, c. Reports to sponsors, employers and other relevant stakeholders, d. Legal actions, if the offence would require that. If a participant is found guilty of serious academic misconduct, the MSM Examination Board may recommend the participants immediate expulsion from the MBA program to the Dean Director. 4.1 Reporting Academic Misconduct Any Examiner (Lecturer), Thesis Supervisor and External Evaluator reviews exam scripts, presentations, written assignments, Master Thesis (drafts), not only for their quality, but also for plagiarism and any other form of academic misconduct such as data forgery and academic outsourcing. In case any form of academic misconduct is observed by the Examiner, Thesis Supervisor or External Evaluator (s)he has the obligation to report the case in writing to the MSM Examination Board ([email protected]) immediately by filling out the attached Reporting Academic Misconduct Form (and copy the MSM Education Officer in the ). Cases of academic misconduct can be brought to the attention of the MSM Examination Board by any interested party. The party is expected to report the case in writing. 4.2 Procedures after reporting Academic Misconduct The MSM Examination Board will then officially inform the participant, the Local Administrator and the MSM Education Officer about the detected academic misconduct. The participant will be immediately placed on academic probation for academic misconduct after being reported to the MSM Examination Board. A record of the notification will be kept in the participant s record file. Before deciding on any sanction the participant will be informed and gets the opportunity to submit a written motivated reaction within two (2) weeks. The MSM Examination Board aims to take a final decision and responds in writing within six (6) weeks after receipt of the written motivated reaction of the participant. The possibility exists to appeal the final decision taken by the MSM Examination Board, (in writing) with the MSM Board of Appeal for Examinations. 48
4.3 Reporting Non-Academic Misconduct The Dean Director can delegate authority with respect to non-academic misconduct to an Ad Hoc Committee or to the MSM Director Education. Non-academic misconduct can be brought to the attention by any interested party. The Ad Hoc Committee or MSM Director Education can decide to give a reprimand to the participant and/or to put the participant on probation for non-academic misconduct and/or to propose the Dean Director to consider legal actions and/or temporary or definite suspension or expulsion from the program. 4.4 Legal actions and/or expulsion from the program Only the Dean Director can ultimately decide on legal actions and/or expulsion from and/or potential re-admission to the program. The MSM Examination Board will bring the written motivated reaction by the participant to the attention of the Dean Director, in case of recommendation of immediate expulsion from the MBA program. 49

Appendix IV Diverse Matters Specialization Changes a. A participant may opt to change the specialization after starting the program. The participant may do so by submitting a written request to the Local Administrator for the change within three (3) months of the start of the program. No requests for changes will be accepted after that date. b. The subjects scheduled for each specialization must be completed as planned. Subjects planned for another specialization cannot be substituted for the subjects planned for that specialization. c. It is generally not possible, nor advisable, to specialize in more than one (1) area at the same time. Only under special circumstances the Local Administrator may give permission to do so. Requests will be handled on a case-by-case base. d. It is possible to elect an additional subject from another specialization. An additional fee will be charged based on the respective number of credits of the subject. Upon successful completion of the course, a certificate will be issued. Requests will be handled on a case-bycase base and requires approval by the Local Administrator. e. If a participant wish to obtain an MBA degree in another specialization than the one completed, they first have to complete the second Specialization Segment subjects successfully and write another Master Thesis. The Local Administrator will determine the additional fee applicable for this new specialization based on the respective number of credits of the subjects of the other specialization and Master Thesis. Work Visits and Guest Lectures Work visits and guest lectures will be scheduled throughout the program. Attendance is mandatory for work visits and guest lectures and attendance records will be taken. Work visits and guest lectures may be an integral part of a particular course. Like for class sessions, adequate preparation and participation is of utmost importance. The participant is usually expected to submit a report. 52
Appendix V In- and Outbound Tests Once the participants have been fully admitted, MSM requires each participant to take a comprehensive assessment examination early in the program and again at the end. These assessment examinations, called in- and outbound test, contain a number of multiple choice questions testing the students on a number of topics that are taught throughout the MBA program. Inbound test The inbound test will be taken by a participant at the start of the program. Although the participant cannot fail the inbound examination and there is no need to prepare for it, it is important that they take this test seriously and the participants should be motivated to perform at their best. The results are used to get an indication of their progress and can be extremely interesting for them. Outbound Test The outbound test will be taken by a participant at the end of the program. We expect participants to score better on the outbound test than the inbound test and the results of both examinations will give a clear indication of the improvements in progress per participant. Mandatory The inbound and the outbound test are mandatory for all participants. Results In order to incentivize the participants, the outcomes of these tests will be reflected on the transcript. The results of both tests will be mentioned on the diploma transcript. 53
Appendix VI Core Values The mission of the Maastricht School of Management is to advance world-enriching management through high-quality education, research and mentoring so that managers can become leaders in the innovative creation of value for their organizations, in a manner that promotes sustainable social and environmental prosperity, particularly in emerging and developing economies. Achieving this mission requires an environment of trust and mutual respect, as well as commitment to truth, the pursuit of intellectual and academic excellence and freedom of expression. The MSM community has agreed upon the following core values to accomplish this mission: Respect and courtesy towards others, Honesty towards yourself and others, Acting responsibly at all times, Recognition of the value of different opinions, Recognition and celebration of the diversity of the MSM community and rejection of any form of discrimination against others on the basis of their skin, color, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, ethnic origin or nationality, Observing established standards of professional conduct, Adherence to the law and commitment to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity, Valuing and respecting the natural environment, Individual accountability for actions inconsistent with these core values. The core values hold for all members of the MSM community: staff, (visiting) faculty and program participants. If a participant has a complaint with respect to the conduct of a member of staff or faculty, and it is not possible to address/resolve this directly to/with this member of staff or faculty, (s)he is expected to report the matter to the MSM Academic Coordinator, or, if this is not possible, to the Dean Director. 54
