Who are UNIGIS UK? We are part of the largest and best established network of distance learning GIS programmes in the world Postgraduate Courses (MSc/PgD/PgC) in: Geographical Information Systems Geographical Information Technologies Applied Geographical Information Systems

Who are we? UNIGIS UK is a partnership between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford, which has been at the forefront GIS education since 1991. The partnership draws on the full range of resources and expertise of both these UK universities. All qualifications from UNIGIS UK are awards made by either Manchester Metropolitan University or the University of Salford. What s our aim? To provide postgraduate education in Geographical Information Systems, Science and Technology that meet the current and future needs of professionals working in the GI industry, or those wishing to enter the sector. We have a proud track record of helping our students achieve their goals. What do our students say? With clear study structure, interesting and thought provoking units, this course is a must for anyone wishing to advance their knowledge regarding GIS. The tutors are excellent and dedicated to providing as much assistance as possible and with the backup and support of the administration staff the whole experience has been a pleasure. I would wholeheartedly recommend this degree programme. Peter Fallon Birmingham City Council The course fulfilled me personally and allowed me to get the job in a field I enjoy. Melanie Greenslade Project Officer, Lancashire County Council Why choose UNIGIS? There are a number of reasons why we think you should choose UNIGIS if you wish to enhance your GIS skills, here are a few of them: Phil Jones Senior Research Fellow, Swansea University UNIGIS Programmes are part-time and taught entirely by distance learning, which means you can study while you work We have three programmes for you to choose from; each designed to meet different career goals and aspirations. Our current programmes are: Geographical Information Systems providing a broad grounding in the major aspects of contemporary GIS Applied Geographical Information Systems focuses on the applications of GIS and Geographical Information Geographical Information Technologies looks at the technologies underpinning GI solutions All our programmes lead to the award of a Master of Science degree after three years of study, but if you decide to study for a shorter time you can be eligible for a Postgraduate Certificate after 1 year or a Postgraduate Diploma after 2 years Whilst I was a student on the UNIGIS course I was also a lecturer on another distance learning course. Having inside knowledge about how much effort and skill it takes to design and deliver such a course I was extremely impressed with the quality of the content and the organisation of the teaching. The course was well designed and thorough.

Why choose UNIGIS? All our courses are supported by bespoke teaching materials and course notes written by the UNIGIS tutors All students have access to our dedicated Virtual Learning Environment, which provides course notes, podcasts, video clips and additional reading Students are also supplied with a range of textbooks, which you can keep when you have finished studying, and access to industry standard GIS software Our units are all assessed by coursework, so there are no exams to worry about All our teaching is informed by research and scholarship and reflects the latest developments in Geographical Information Systems, Science and Technology UNIGIS UK has a dedicated Administrative team, who provide a focal point for our students. Tutors are available via email, telephone, and Skype. We maintain discussion boards for students, so you will not feel alone on our programme Comments by our External Examiners, who verify the standards and quality of our programmes: The UNIGIS programme offers an excellent opportunity for students to gain a wide range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge in GIS and related technologies. The staff provide a wide range of expertise and, perhaps equally importantly, also provide students with a very pleasant, integrated and supportive learning environment that maximises their opportunity to benefit directly from being enrolled in this programme UNIGIS UK, along with the Free University of Amsterdam and the University of Salzburg, established UNIGIS as an international brand, which now comprises a network of 10 institutions from around the world. The UNIGIS international network is the largest provider of postgraduate GIS education in the world How does UNIGIS work? The three UNGIS UK programmes are structured over three years, two year of taught units and a final year to complete a dissertation In the first two years of taught units you will study three units in each year Year One In the first year all students study three core units: PgC in GIS GIS / Applied GIS / GI Technologies Foundations of GIS Spatial Data Infrastructures Databases These units ensure that you have a sound foundation in GIS theory and practice before you go on to specialise. At this stage if you decide to leave you will be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Certificate in GIS.

Year Two The second year is where you begin to take specialist units relating to the programme that you decide to take. There is one core unit,, which all second year students take. This unit develops your knowledge and skills in applying spatial analysis. The remaining two units you take allow you to specialise in your area of interest. If you decide to leave UNIGIS at this stage you will be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in GIS, Applied GIS or GI Technologies depending on which programme you are studying. The unit choices in the second year are: GIS OPTIONS Choose two from: Distributed GIS Environmental Applications of GIS Remote Sensing Social Applications of GIS Spatial Databases & Programming Each Applied GIS OPTIONS Choose two from: Environmental Applications of GIS Remote Sensing Social Applications of GIS Each Year Three (MSc Dissertation) GI Technologies COMPULSORY Distributed GIS Spatial Databases & Programming Each You will research a GIS project and present your findings as a dissertation with a target length of 15,000 words. To assist you in your research you will be allocated one of the UNIGIS tutors as your supervisor. Your supervisor will help you to develop your topic and will support you during your research. You may wish to develop a research topic based upon GIS issues in your work-place, thus gaining a double benefit from your studies. On successful completion of your dissertation you will be eligible for the award of MSc in GIS, Applied GIS or GI Technologies depending on which programme you are studying. For some units you will need to purchase a copy of the IDRISI Package at an educational price, but you will be informed about that in advance.
