1 Modular System Dual SCM MPIO Software Installation This document will help you to connect a MAXDATA dual controller SAS disk array with redundant dual connection to both storage controller modules (SCM) on the MAXDATA Modular System. A dual connection from the storage to the MAXDATA Modular System will prevent data loss or LUN unavailability, if a controller failure in the storage or the MAXDATA Modular System occurs. Also a failure of a SAS cable would not be have an effect to the LUN availability. With a redundant connection, the Administrator will have enough time to replace or repair the defective components without a system or a storage shutdown. Attention: Backup your data and your OS installation before you start a Firmware upgrade. Data loss or data unavailability during or after an update cannot be excluded. It is not recommended to update firmware or driver on productive systems, because some updates needs a system shutdown. 1.1 Connection The SAS storage controller modules in the Modular System have external SFF-8088 connectors. The external connector of the disk arrays depends on the disk array manufacturer. The MAXDATA RV SAS series have SFF-8088 connectors and the previous MAXFDATA SR1202 disk arrays have SFF- 8470 connectors. So be carefully if you purchase a cable. 1.3 Required Firmware Modular System To use dual controller modules in the MAXDATA Modular System, you have to use the Modular System Firmware Package v2.7 or higher. It is recommended to update the firmware before you install the second SCM and before you install the MPIO driver. You will find more information about MAXDATA Modular System firmware upgrade in the document MAXDATA Modular System Firmware Update. If you use an external SAS storage with dual connection, do not forget to install the storage MPIO driver on all compute modules which have access to the storage LUNs. More information can be found in the documents MAXDATA RV Series MPIO Software Installation or MAXDATA SR1202 MPIO Software Installation. 1.4 Assigning of external storage LUNs or devices 1. Open a Web browser (eg Firefox or Internet Explorer) and type in the IP address of the Modular Systems. The default IP address is 192.168.150.150 and the default user and password is admin 2. After login click on Switches in the left menu 3. Click on the first controller SCM1 4. On the right side of the window left-click Expansion Port 5. Choose all servers (compute modules) which should have access to the external device. Attention: An external Streamer can have only access from one system and one connection. Abb. 1 6. Left-click Apply to save the configuration 7. Left-click the second controller SCM2 and repeat point 4-6. Attention: If multiple compute modules should have access to different LUNs, you have to configure LUN Masking on the storage or you must use zoning. Otherwise all compute Modules would have access an all LUNs in the storage, which will cause data loss or LUN unavailability on standard Windows installations. Tipp: If you need a shared LUN e.g. for VMware or Microsoft Cluster you can purchase the optional Shared LUN Key article number 400714. The license can be activated with the Link Feature Activation. 1.5 Microsoft Windows 2003 SCM MPIO driver installation / upgrade 1. Check the dual connection of the volumes in the Windows disk management console. If the volumes are listed twice the dual SCM configuration is working. Attention: Do not use the initialize feature of the disk management console on the same twice listed volumes. Abb. 2 Abb. 3 2. Install Storport Patch KB932755 for Windows 2003. Attention: The language of the storport patch must be equal to your installed Windows language x86: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=dead950b-da47-4dc2- ABCD-40F61BD4D1AA&displaylang=en x64: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=5ff8c152-9114-458f-86f9-01c2b8cac450&displaylang=en 3. Do not restart system after the storport patch installation 4. Start Windows device manager 5. Expand SCSI- and RAID-Controllers with click on + 6. Right-click the LSI 1064E entry and choose properties 7. Change to the driver tab 8. If the driver version is older than v1.27.3.0, then left-click update driver. (If the driver is v1.27.3.0 or higher restart system to fulfill the storport patch installation requirement) Abb. 4 Abb. 5 Copyright MAXDATA GmbH Autor: Hasan Akkurt Datum: 26.08.2009 Seite 4
