Before/After the Service of the Great Compline or you may call Fr. Dean at the church office to make an appointment Great Lent is a season when many Orthodox Christians participate in the Sacrament of Confession. Like the prodigal son, we look at our lives and decide what we must change so that we may live the way God has taught us to live. Like the father in the cide to turn toward Him. All He has to see is our sincere repentance, or change, and our desire to return to Him. His arms are always open and waiting to embrace us. The sacrament of Holy Confession is our opportunity to speak to God courageously, humbly and honestly in the presence of a priest. The priest then guides ST. My Life in Christ The Sacraments Holy Unction In this sacrament, you are anointed with oil that has been blessed to give you strength in healing physical and spiritual sickness. It is offered to all during Holy Week and on request at other times. Marriage In the sacrament of marriage, a couple stands in front of God, commits them- selves to a union and are united as one in the eyes of God. This is path set forth for the benefit of their spiritual growth and union with God. Ordination In this sacrament, the priesthood is given to an individual, and he is endowed with the spiritual powers to carry out his work. Baptism and Chrismation He who believes and is baptized will be saved (Mark 16:16). Baptism is the beginning of the Orthodox Christian life, where one is cleansed from all past sins and sealed with the Holy Spirit. It is how one joins the Church and becomes part of the body of Christ and becomes able to participate in all the Sacraments for spiritual benefit. Chrismation is the anointing of the Holy Chrism, which is the seal of the Holy Spirit. It is a sacrament normally done right after Baptism. Holy Communion, Confession and Holy Unction are interrelated because they serve for the healing of the body and soul. Make participation in worship and the sacraments of the Church a regular and integral part of your life. 5 WEDNESDAY STUDIES IN THE FAITH The Book of Exodus Morning Study - Evening Study March 3 March 10 March Topics 10:00 am - 7:00 pm Chapter 32 Chapter 33 Great Lent Presanctified Liturgy at 5:30 pm Followed by Lenten Pot-luck Dinner Bring a favorite Lenten dish to share. All funds for those purposes are held separate from the Operating Funds in the Checking and Money Market. A challenge to you St. Sophia runs on Stewardship! We all know that Stewardship is made up of Time, Talent and Treasury. Maybe you are teaching Sunday School, chanting, singing, cooking, or baking. Perhaps you are dyeing eggs, sewing Altar Boy robes, making Palm Crosses. You cleaned up during coffee hour, shoveled and sanded the sidewalk, and cooked for the soup kitchen. The list goes on and on. We thank you for all that you do. We cannot do this alone, many hands make light work. And every little bit helps. This month we will be inviting you to take part in a Change Challenge. You will find cups in the Narthex marked St. Sophia Runs on Stewardship. Please take a cup home and fill it with spare change. Return your cup to the Narthex and you will be entered into a drawing for a Grocery Card as a thank you. Speaking of Grocery Cards- or Shop Rite cards EVERY Sunday during coffee hour. To date we have earned in interest all year. It also has the potential to earn $26,000. If 100 families purchased a $100 card each week, we would earn $26,000. Please note that with Stop and Shop you may use the card to buy your gas at their gas stations in Waterford and East Lyme. As we enter into the Triodion in preparation for lent we need to remain focused on the meaning of the season. We do not make this journey alone, but together as a Church Family. Yannoula 7 ST. Stewardship - An Act of Faith The First Ark The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil. And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the LORD said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the ground, man and beast and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. Genesis 6:5-8 Because Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, the Lord commanded him to build an ark. We have to use our imagination to see what faith Noah had to respond to God. Here he was, nowhere near a body of water and the Lord commands him to build an ark, a boat, a and very large one at that! God called to Noah and Noah responded in faith! You can imagine how crazy his friends thought he was. Day in and day out, they would pass by and laugh at him as he worked away at this project. Everyone thought he was crazy. His We all know what happened. The rain began to fall and the floods came and the water began to rise. Scripture says the windows of the heavens were opened and the rains fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights. It was in the six-hundredth year of his life that Noah led the parade of his sons and their wives and the beasts and all the things that creep upon the earth into the ark. As the waters rose, the ark floated to safety. It was saving ark that came into being because The Lord calls each of us to service in His ministry. How do we respond to His call? 9 2013 STEWARDSHIP REPORT 1/1/13-2/18/13 Number of Pledges 81 Pledged Amount $ 76,635.00 Largest Pledge to date $ 5,000.00 Average Pledge $ 946.12 in our Stewardship Program.
