SECTION I Religious Development The teaching of Religion and all Religious activities at Our Lady of the Lakes is a response to Jesus invitation to make disciples of all. This philosophy is an integral part of our Religious Studies department which strives to present the authentic and complete message of Christ and His Church, adapted to the capacity of the learners (NCD#264). The context of Religious Studies includes studying God s word, worship, and service. Our goals include the following; to deepen within our students their knowledge of Scripture and Church doctrine; to develop in our students a personal morality that respects the dignity and integrity of themselves and all people; and to lead our students to discover the value of participating in the ministry of the Church through service, prayer, and an active involvement in the liturgy. Studying God's Word The teaching mission of Jesus is reflected daily in the Religious Studies curriculum at Our Lady of the Lakes. The classroom based catechetical program is Christ Our Life by Loyola Press. This program brings together a contemporary approach to education, the solid doctrinal content of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the foundation of biblical faith and the caring pastoral ministry of faith formation. Worship opportunities are offered through daily prayer. Mass and other liturgical celebrations are offered weekly. Catholic students are invited to actively participate in the sacraments. Through these experiences the students become familiar with many aspects of Catholic worship. Students are required to show proper respect and reverence at all worship celebrations. Christian Service Students are required to complete 10 Christian service hours at each grade level (5 hours each semester) and are introduced to social justice issues. By participating in the ministry of the Church, students discover the value of sharing their commitment with others. By integrating Jesus desire to love one another through service, they may also be motivated to derive possible solutions to community and world problems. SECTION II Student Services Our Lady of the Lakes provides these services for students. Counseling The goal of this department is to maximize the personal growth of each of our students. Our main functions are: Assessment: Identification, interpretation and discussion of aptitudes through standardized testing. Individual counseling is available as the need arises. Library Media Center Our Lady of the Lakes has a well-equipped Library Media Center that provides a variety of services to the school community. The media center houses a collection of print, non-print, and electronic materials chosen to support the curriculum and encourage students' recreational reading. The Library Media Center is available throughout the school day. Internet usage rules apply to the computers in the library. Lunch A la carte lunches are sold daily at reasonable prices from the school kitchen. Students eat on the gym balcony. Juice, snack, and milk machines are available for use only at lunch times. Students may also bring lunch from home. Lockers Each student will be assigned a locker by the administration. For the protection of all students and their property, lockers must be kept locked at all times when not in use. Lockers remain the property of the school and the administration retains the right to search lockers. All 8 th grade students (and a few 7 th grade students) will be issued a lock. This lock may be purchased at the end of the academic year for $10.00 to be used through high school Student Guests For security reasons, unauthorized guests are not allowed on campus during school hours. SECTION III Academics The academic program at Our Lady of the Lakes is essential to the educational growth of each student. We meet the educational needs of our students by offering courses in the following subjects. GPA is calculated at quarterly for the honor roll and at the end of each semester for class rank. Final semester grades are calculated using 40% for each quarter and 20% for the semester exam. Honor Roll 4.00-3.60 GPA= First Honors 3.59-3.25 GPA= Second Honors Plus Portal: ParentPlus, StudentPlus Parents are urged to consult the ParentPlus Portal for current grades and to check student progress. Students will be required to access the StudentPlus Portal for their current grades and assignments. The Portal is accessible on the web at plusportals.com/oll. The ParentPlus mobile App and StudentPlus mobile App is available for IOS and Android devices. Each student and parent will be issued a PlusPortal account for access to their grades and assignments. Communications from the school to the parents and students will utilize the Plus Portals. Parents and students are responsible for updating their PlusPortals accounts with their active information. Contact the school office with any PlusPortal issues. Academic Progress Grades are posted regularly to ParentPlus. Report Cards Report Cards are generated quarterly and posted on ParentPlus. Semester report cards will be mailed to the parent or guardian of all students. Parent-teacher conferences after the first marking period are mandatory and will be scheduled for early November. Academic Probation Students with less than a 1.8 cumulative GPA will be placed on academic probation. The academic performance of these students will be monitored. Failure to improve could result in dismissal from our school. Clarkston Shared Services We continue a mutually beneficial arrangement with Clarkston Community Schools (CCS) for shared services. Extra Curricular Activities SECTION IV Our Lady of the Lakes is happy to provide the interested student with a variety of activities outside the classroom. We hope that they enhance the high school experience by enabling students to explore their talents. It is only through the participation and cooperation of our students that these activities can succeed. We expect each student to share his/her talents and in so doing accept the challenge to make the school a more wellrounded community. Eligibility Students are required to demonstrate satisfactory academic performance to participate in any extracurricular activity. A student will be deemed ineligible for any co-curricular activity if at mid-quarter or quarter he/she does not maintain a 2.0 GPA. Sports Our Lady of the Lakes has a proud tradition of athletic excellence. In addition to enhancing physical fitness, studentathletes will learn more about such concepts as teamwork, discipline, competition, and sportsmanship. They will benefit from working with coaches who understand the proper role of athletics. Our athletes are a visible manifestation of Laker pride and are expected to represent our values. The following sports are offered: FALL WINTER SPRING GIRLS Volleyball Basketball Softball Soccer Cheerleading Cheerleading Track Cross Country BOYS Football Basketball Baseball Soccer Track Cross Country CYO sports registration and fees are collected through the OLL Athletic Booster Club. Student Council Students elected to council gain experience in parliamentary procedure and decision-making. They play an important leadership role. Interested students must have at least a 2.0 GPA and teacher and administrator approval to run for election. Choir Students can enhance our school liturgies while gaining choral experience. The choir meets before classes begin. Robotics Club Robotics is available for male and female students in 6th through 8th grades. Students compete annually in FIRST Robotics under the supervision of Richard Topolewski, the robotics facilitator. Drama Drama is open to all middle school students interested in theater. Drama meets throughout the school year. Members may be able to audition for the fall and spring play. Other opportunities are available for back stage crew and set design. Liturgical Choir or Instrumentation Students can enhance our school liturgies while performing at Mass. National Junior Honor Society Our Lady of the Lakes sponsors a National Junior Honor Society. This is a service organization composed of students who have exhibited excellence in scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service. Students who have completed one semester at Our Lady of the Lakes and have at least a 3.5 GPA are invited to apply for membership in NJHS. Attendance Policies SECTION V It is the belief of Our Lady of the Lakes High School that students must be in school on time to learn. Excessive absenteeism and tardiness are detrimental to the educational process. Students who are constantly missing school, or are tardy for various reasons, normally do not experience success in education. Therefore, we establish the following policies. Attendance Pupils are expected to be in attendance every day. Parents must notify the school office (248) 623-0340 by 7:25 am on the morning of any absence. The attendance officer will contact parents if no phone call is received. Any absence especially an hourly absence - that is not properly explained to the administration will be considered unexcused and will result in disciplinary action. Notification of absences is solely the responsibility of the parents. The administration reserves the right to decide which absences are properly explained. The student is responsible for all work missed during any absence. The student must arrange make-up work at the convenience of the teacher. Students who exceed ten absences per term in any class will have to explain their situation to the administration. Any student competing in any extracurricular activity must be in school for a minimum of four classes in order to participate in any practice, meeting, dance, game, etc. Students suspended for any reason will be required to make up the school work missed. However, this work will not be for credit. Suspended students may not participate in any sport during their suspension. Suspended students are not allowed on school campus during their suspension. Tardiness Tardiness is defined as being late for any class. Tardiness is detrimental to the school and student progress. Repeated tardiness to any class will result in disciplinary action. Since first hour tardiness is a special problem, please note that parents cannot excuse this tardy. The school administration will consider the circumstance to determine if the tardy is excused or unexcused. Any student arriving after the first class bell at 7:30 am must report to the reception desk where the student is given a pass. Tardy to Class Students must be in their classroom when the period begins. If a student arrives late to any class for a justifiable reason, they should secure a pass from the staff member responsible for their late arrival. If the tardy is unexcused, the teacher can assign a detention. Frequent tardiness will result in further disciplinary action. Long Term Illness The school will do all that is reasonable to cooperate with students who become ill and must miss school. Class credit will be determined by the administration on an individual basis. Leaving Campus Students may never leave campus without parental consent. Any student leaving campus during the school day must follow a checkout procedure. After a written note or phone call request is presented to the main office, the student must report to the office (in the Commons), see an adult, and use the sign-out sheet. back in. Any deviation from this policy will be considered cutting class and result in administrative review. In the case of an illness, a student must report to the Commons office and call a parent before being excused. A staff member must speak to the parent before the student leaves. Dress Code SECTION VI Proper attire reflects an atmosphere of self-respect, modesty, and seriousness of purpose. To encourage those results, we have instituted a dress code emphasizing neatness and propriety. Students shall follow dress code on all school days. Uniforms must be worn from 7:25 am to 2:35 pm on all school days unless otherwise specified. Uniform pieces must be purchased from our supplier: Dennis Uniform 1532 N. Shirts must be tucked in and buttoned. White or royal blue golf shirts with logo (long or short sleeved). Shirts must be tucked in and buttoned. Only solid white short-sleeve T-shirts without any coloring, lettering, or graphics may be worn under any school uniform shirt. No layering of long sleeve under short sleeve is ever allowed. Athletic/Team sports shirts may only be worn on game days with prior approval from the administration. A solid color plain or woven black or brown belt. Socks must be black, brown, navy, or white crew length socks. All socks must be over the ankle. Black or brown dress shoes with laces of the same color. Shoes must have backs on them. Not acceptable: flip flops!!! Boots of any kind!! Clogs, tennis shoes, hiking shoes, sandals, moccasins or slip-ons with an open heel. Mass day attire: school dress pants, Oxford cloth shirts with tie and uniform vest or sweater *** NO SPORTS or TEAM SHIRTS ON MASS DAY The white/blue polo is not mass attire! ***All students are required to have an OLL navy blue uniform sweater, sweater vest or half zipper long sleeve fleece with school logo for Mass days. Hooded sweatshirts or jackets may not be worn at Mass, They must be removed when you enter church. Young ladies uniforms will consist of: Our gray skirt offered at Dennis. Skirt length must touch the top of the knee. Tan Dockers style dress pants. These pants must be purchased from the authorized uniform supplier. White oxford cloth, button down collar shirts. Shirts must be tucked in and buttoned White or royal blue golf shirts with logo (long or short-sleeve) are the only acceptable option. Shirts must be tucked in and buttoned. No camisoles, tank tops, or shirts of any color underneath the uniform shirt. No layering of long sleeve under short sleeve shirts is allowed. Athletic team sports shirts may only be worn on game days with prior approval from administration. A solid color brown or black belt must be worn with pants. Navy, black or white knee socks or tights - no patterns. Navy, black or white over-the-ankle socks. Socks are to be worn at all times. Black or brown dress shoes with laces of the same color. Shoes must have backs on them. Not acceptable: flip flops!!! Boots of any kind!! Tennis shoes or sandals with backs (no flip-flops of any kind) NOT PERMITTED AT ANY TIME (including Special Code Days) Hats of any kind Yoga pants, spandex pants, or jeggings Hooded sweatshirts on dress code days Backless shoes: including Flip-flops, athletic sandals Large buckles on belts High heeled shoes Tank tops, or tops with spaghetti straps Low cut tops or anything immodest Earrings (or anything covering earrings) on males Large earrings or large hoop earrings on young ladies. Jewelry needs to be limited to tasteful and discreet earrings and necklaces. No choker style bands may be worn around the neck. Hair with inappropriate color, length or styles. Girls are not permitted to wear large hair bands of any kind or hair wraps or large flowers. They may wear barrettes, rubber bands or small ribbons, and approved headbands. Boys may not wear long hair below the collar or ears, or in their eyes. Excessive make-up. Visible piercing with the exception of female ears. T-shirts with rock and roll groups, drug, alcohol, or sex logos. Shirts that display words contrary to Christian values. Chains or spikes. Military clothing or boots of any kind Unshaven gentlemen Tattoos Inappropriate clothing (too tight, too short, too revealing). Midriffs must be covered. Names may not be embroidered on any uniform pieces including sweaters. The school administration reserves the right to determine the propriety of each student s style of dress and/or personal appearance. Disciplinary Procedures SECTION VII Our Lady of the Lakes is a close-knit community that functions through the good will of all its members. Individual responsibility, cooperative behavior, and a positive attitude are necessary to maintain a productive atmosphere. Rules are necessary for the good of our community. Disregard for these rules will lead to problems for the student. The following disciplinary steps are available in response to improper student behavior at any school activity on or off campus. Detention A detention is given for an infraction of school rules. Detentions can be given by any staff member for dress code infractions, Church misconduct, improper affectionate behavior, unlocked lockers, unauthorized use of snack machines, unauthorized or improper use of electrical devices (see cell phone policy), and tardiness (see Section VIII). A detention may also be given for misconduct in class. Classroom detentions are at the discretion of teachers for behavior that does not reflect an understanding of and compliance with either school or class rules. Teachers may elect to have the student serve a classroom detention at a time of their choosing. Students are given 24 hour notice of detentions in order to arrange transportation. The obligation to serve a detention supersedes any other school related activity including sports. Parents will be notified of detentions by mail. Parents must then sign and return the notification letter to the school by the time of the detention. Detentions are held on Wednesdays after school from 2:40 pm - 3:40 pm. Saturday Detention Saturday detentions are given for: Any Violation Missing a regular detention, At the discretion of the administration. Skipping a Saturday detention is cause for a suspension. Students are required to pay $5 for Saturday detention. Saturday detentions are held from 8:00 am to 10:00 am on designated Saturdays. Violation A violation is issued for a serious violation of school rules or for frequent disregard of lesser rules. All violations will be processed through the administration and parents must sign and return violation forms. A Saturday detention will accompany all violations. Further disciplinary action is at the discretion of the administration. Violations may be given for, but are not limited to, the following: Class misconduct Church misconduct Cheating, lying, stealing, plagiarism, copyright infringement Vandalism Indecent or abusive language Skipping detention Insubordinate action toward administration/staff Excessive rough-housing Four detentions in a semester Suspension A suspension may be given by the administration at any time to a student whose behavior warrants serious punishment. Suspensions will be issued for, but are not limited to, the following offenses: Accumulation of three violations during the school year. Possession of contraband items. Performing any action that could be dangerous or injurious to any student or staff member. Theft and/or destruction of school or personal property. Fighting or bullying A third or more cell phone offense. Possession or use of alcohol or drugs, at school or school related events. Possession or use of tobacco or tobacco related products including electronic cigarettes (E-cigs)at school or school related events Leaving campus without permission. Students suspended for any reason will be required to make up the school work missed. However, this work will not be for credit. Suspended students may not participate in any sport during their suspension. Suspended students are not allowed on school campus during their suspension. The length and terms of a suspension may vary and are at the discretion of the administration. Student work is to be completed but not for credit during a suspension. Expulsion or Exclusion A student may be expelled or excluded when his or her conduct is deemed detrimental to the good of the community. Such action is at the discretion of the administration. The following are grounds for expulsion: Three suspensions at any time during the school year. The failure over an extended period of time (two semesters) to maintain a 1.8 GPA. The frequent disregard of attendance and/or discipline policies. Behavior which demonstrates lack of concern and jeopardizes the safety of oneself or others. Weapons offenses. Drug and alcohol related offenses. Since expulsion is severe and deals with the immediate withdrawal of a student from school, the following procedure is outlined for conflict resolution: Student and parents may appeal to the pastor. School Policies Section VIII Weapons Policy Students are prohibited from bringing weapons to school or to school functions, or on school premises, or on or near a school bus. NOTE: A weapon is any object which can be used to threaten or harm another person. A student shall not possess, handle or transmit a gun, knife, brass knuckles, martial arts device, paintball, or splat gun, or other object or instrument that can be considered or used as a weapon or is capable of inflicting bodily injury. A student shall not possess any object or instrument that is a look-a-like weapon (starter gun, toy gun, rubber knife, air soft pellet gun etc.) Any weapons related infraction is grounds for immediate suspension and possible expulsion or exclusion. Drugs and Alcohol Policy While we are aware that the misuse of controlled substances is a societal ill, we do not condone, and will not allow, alcohol, narcotics, or any other controlled substance (see definition below) to be purchased, sold, possessed, or used on school property. Nor can students come to school under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Any substance-related infraction will be grounds for immediate suspension and possible expulsion. Suspicion of illegal substance use may require testing at a school approved facility. Definition: Any paraphernalia, trace, drug, or alcohol found on a student, in a student s car, or on school property. First Offense: Suspended for at least five (5) school days. For reinstatement, student must show proof of enrollment and completion of a substance abuse program. This must be done in a timely manner. Additional Christian Service may be required at the discretion of the principal. Egregious violations afford the principal discretion for expulsion on the first offense. Sexual Harassment Policy Sexual harassment refers to sexually inappropriate behavior that is not welcome, is offensive, and infringes upon the rights of another. Harassment can fall into one of two categories: conduct or communication. Sexually inappropriate behavior refers to inappropriate touching, gestures, and offensive language of a sexual nature. Harassment also includes conduct or communication that has a profound effect on a student s education, or creates an intimidating hostile or offensive educational environment. This includes verbal or physical conduct relating to a person s sex, race, color, national origin, religion, height, weight, or disability. The school will investigate all complaints of harassment in a confidential, professional manner. Appropriate action will be taken when warranted. Individuals involved in any allegations will be given due process. However, it should be noted that students found in violation of this policy, will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including suspension and/or expulsion from school. Verbal Assault (Bullying) Policy Verbal assault is any communication or behavior that, by its nature, poses a serious threat to the safety or well-being of others or which would reasonably put a school employee or student in fear of injury to their person or property. This type of behavior makes a mockery of our Catholic values and cannot be tolerated. Any of the following actions may result in suspension or expulsion: words, signs, jokes, pranks, intimidation, gestures, physical contact or violence. Technology Policy Students receive a copy of the school technology policy which must be signed by parents and students prior to using school technical resources. Cell Phone and Electronic Devices Policy The use of cell phones for any purpose (calling, texting, pictures etc.) is never allowed during the school day (7:25 a.m.- 2:35 p.m.) including during class exchange and lunch. The school is allowing students to carry a cell phone on their person because of the risk of theft of personal property; however, the cell phone must be turned off and not visible during school hours. The staff and administration reserve the right to confiscate any cell phone that is in violation of the acceptable code of conduct for students that attend Our Lady of the Lakes School. No excuses will be accepted. First Offense: The cell phone is taken away and held by administration. The student will be given a detention. The phone will not be returned to the student for two school days not including the day the phone was taken away. A letter will be sent to the parents to be signed and returned before the student can pick up the confiscated phone. Second Offense: The cell phone will be taken away and held by administration. The student will be given two detentions. The phone will not be returned to the student for five school days not including the day the phone was taken away. A letter will be sent to the parents to be signed and returned before the student can pick up the confiscated phone. Third Offense: The cell phone will be taken away from the student. The student will be suspended from school for one day. This will be the school day following the confiscation of the cell phone. The parents must pick up the cell phone. It will not be returned to the student. The school is not responsible for loss or damage of any personal electronic equipment including a cell phone that is brought to school. Visitors All visitors are to report to the school reception desk entering the school. For security reasons, unauthorized guests are not allowed on campus during school hours. Telephones Telephones in the school office are intended for the use of official business. They are to be used by students only in the case of emergencies. Bus Regulations Bus transportation to and from school is provided for students who live in the Waterford School District. Students must adhere to bus regulations established by the Waterford School District. Failure to comply with established rules and regulations will result in disciplinary action, possibly including temporary or permanent loss of bus riding privileges. Food and Drink - Vending Machines Policy Coffee, lattes, smoothies pop etc. cannot go beyond the Commons because we must protect the carpeted areas of the school. Students are allowed to have bottled water in their classrooms. Use of vending machines at times other than during lunch is forbidden. In "Loco Parentis" The administration and staff of our school operate in the capacity of "Loco Parentis", handling all matters in what is deemed to be the best interest of the students in general and the school in particular. Accordingly, the administration maintains the responsibility to make any changes in the policies and procedures listed in (or omitted from) this code for the good of the community in an emergency. Unscheduled School Closings When weather conditions are present, Our Lady of the Lakes Middle School may be closed for the day, delayed in opening, or dismissed early. The middle school will be closed if one of the following announcements is made: 1.) Waterford Public Schools Closed 2.) Waterford Catholic Schools Closed 3.) Our Lady of the Lakes School Closed We make an attempt to send an email to all parents and students who have activated their ParentPlus portal with an email address in their profile regarding unscheduled school closings. If you have entered your email address on your ParentPlus account, you will receive this notification. Extended School Hours (ESH) This program is for before and after school supervision. Students arriving before 7:15 a.m. and staying after 2:30 p.m. will be sent to the ESH program. A charge will be assessed for using this service. Students using this service on a regular basis will be required to be registered. Mrs. Karen Wyns, Director of ESH, can answer your questions regarding the program and cost. Contact ESH personnel at 248-623-8896. Students may not be in the building before or after school unsupervised. If a student is unsupervised he or she will be sent to ESH at the parent s expense. Middle school students may not be in the building unsupervised while waiting for the elementary dismissal at 3:30 p.m. Fire and Tornado Drills Fire and tornado drills are held periodically during the school year. Proper procedures for evacuating the building in case of a fire or for moving to a safe location in case of a tornado are posted in all rooms, and will be reviewed with the students by the faculty. Students must become completely familiar with these procedures and in case of an alarm should move to their designated location quickly and quietly.
