Retouching and illustration Year: 2007 Concept / rationale: Personal project - It started out as part of a testcase at AIM Proximity in order to asses my knowledge and skills in Photoshop. After the initial assignment - simply doing a knock-out technique on the provided image of the dog - I felt somewhat unsatisfied with no environment in which to place this poor dog. I soon envisioned the dog as a cast-away, ( an unwanted casualty of skill assesment ) destined to be glorified! Execution: I wanted to capture a classic Rembrandt look which resulted in a very dark picture which is illuminated by the dog and it s halo. There is however a lot of detail in the shadows that get lost somewhat in this small image. ( the original file is well over 500 Mb ) All additional imagery was CC licensed photography and photoshop brushes, additional details were hand drawn ( for instance, all the grass is vector art created in illustrator ). All images are individually treated within photoshop smartobjects and countless adjustment layers. In addition, nearly everything in the picture is non-destructive editing, allowing full adjustment of every single detail and object.

I wanted to amplify the irony the title embodied and chose to do so by contradicting artwork. I had some nice black and white royalty free stock of a girl spacing out and taking some pills that would form a nice starting point, After a very extensive re-colouring I ended up with a nice pallate of red and yellow tints which suited the mood of the album a lot better. To make the cover a bit more compelling I chose to superimpose the girl taking the pills as a ghosty image in order to bring cause and effect together. The ghosting also acts as a solid base for the Typography from which she appears to originate.

It s basically Ian leaning on a chair against a speeding subway train rushing past.

Illustration Who: Vodafone Wellington Lions Rugby Year: 2007 Concept: Mascotte Concept / rationale: Execution: The Vodafone Wellington Lions wanted their own personal mascotte in a similar fashion as the Wellington Hurricane s Captain Hurricane for promotional use. After numerous hand-drawn models the final version was traced and vectorized to a final line-art piece. This drawing is digitally airbrushed in Photoshop by hand to create the final full colour illustration.
