Given UWM's lcatin in the largest urban area in Wiscnsin, the cunseling faculty is cmmitted t training multiculturally cmpetent cmmunity cunselrs, rehabilitatin cunselrs, and schl cunselrs t serve clients in urban envirnments. All three cncentratins share a cre preparatin in the areas f cunseling and educatinal psychlgy. As students make prgress in their prgram f studies, their fcus will take n a mre specialized training with cntent specific curses and field placements where they will refine their cunseling skills in practical settings. The prgram is apprved by the Wiscnsin Department f Public Instructin. Effective fr students admitted t begin their prgram n r after May 15, 2002, certificatin requirements have significantly changed. All students will receive K-12 certificatin, and an internship r a 2-year teaching experience will n lnger be required. Students are trained t apply the principles f learning, human develpment, cunseling, and research and measurement within the schls. Preparatin is designed t enable students t deliver schl cunseling prgrams and services t schls and the cmmunity. Students arrange their prgram f studies in cnsultatin with their advisrs s that the 48 credits earned tward a master's degree als will satisfy Wiscnsin State Certificatin requirements. Certificatin is available as a K-12 Schl Cunselr and as a Bilingual Cunselr. The Schl Cunseling Certificatin prgram is fr students wh already pssess a master's degree.
