Basic Health Care College, Fredericia-Vejle-Horsens Basic Health Care College Fredericia, Vejle and Horsens is situated in the south eastern part of Denmark in the above mentioned three cities. The Basic Health Care College of Fredericia, Vejle and Horsens has approximately 700 full time student equivalents which means there are around 2000 students all in all enrolled in the health care programmes. The Basic Health Care College of Fredericia, Vejle and Horsens is one of 18 Basic Health Care Colleges in Denmark and offers three different allied health care programs and lot of other educational activities. The three different programs are: Social and Health Care Helper, Social and Health Care Assistant and Educator Assistant. Social and Health Care Helper. This program has a duration of 1 year and 2 months with a school based part of the education of 24 weeks, and a vocational training part of 28 32 weeks. The work area of the Social and Health Care Helper is helping and caring for (mostly) elderly people in relation to practical and personal assistance, activation and elementary nursing. Subjects during the school periods are: Practical - cultural-activity related subjects, Sociological social subject and Nursing subjects Thereto basic subjects such as Danish, English and Natural Science are offered. 1
The vocational training takes place in practice placements in nursing homes or in the homes of clients. All students have a personal, individual study- and education plan and have to document Social and Health Care Assistant. This programme has a duration of 1 year and 8 months after completing the Social and Health Care Helper programme. The schoolbased part of the programme has a duration of 32 weeks and the vocational training part a duration of 48 weeks. The area of work of the Social and Health Care Assistant is nursing in hospitals, nursing homes and private homes of clients. In the school based part of the education subjects are: Sociological-social subjects including work organization, Cultural-activity related subjects, Medical subjects and Nursing subjects. Thereto basic subjects as Danish, English and Basic Science are offered. The vocational training takes place in somatic and psychiatric hospitals and in community care and nursing homes. Educator Assistant This programme has a duration of 2 years 3,5 months with a school based part of 48 weeks and a vocational training part of 24 weeks. The area of work of the Educator Assistant is childcare, care for special needs of children and adults and leisure activities in recreation centres. Typically Educator Assistants are employed in day - and 24 hour institutions for children and young persons or in centres for children with special needs. Subjects in the school based part of the programme are common human needs and development and living conditions of children and youth with subjects such as: Cultural-activity related subjects, Health subjects, Sociological-social subjects IT - and communication subjects and Thereto basic subjects as Danish and English are offered. The vocational training takes place in kindergartens, nursery homes, child care institutions, after school child care institutions or recreational centres. All students have a personal, individual study and education plan and have to document Other educational activities: Basic Education Courses, Special Pedagogical and Educational offers and Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning. Basic Education Courses The college offers basic education courses with a duration from 20 to 60 weeks. These courses are offered so that any given student can choose between different subjects and 3
contents and plan a course in accordance to personal needs and basic knowledge and aiming at enrolling in one of the health care programmes offered at the college or in any other health care education institution. Special Pedagogical and Educational offers. The college offers a variety of special pedagogical and educational services aiming at facilitating learning of each individual student and helping him/her to succeed and complete his/her course or programme. These offers are for instance: SPS= Special Pedagogical Services which is help and guidance in relation to learning disabilities. Study guidance, which is help and guidance in relation to dyslexia. Mentoring which is help and guidance in relation to all kinds of problems that obstruct the student s ability to complete a course or a programme. Personal guide or instructor which means that any given student is offered a personal counsellor and instructor throughout both courses and programmes. The personal councillor is in cooperation with the student responsible for establishing the individual study and education plan and keeping it up. Thereto there is a general student counselling service - and in order to facilitate the learning of all students a wide range of methods is used in teaching, i.e. problembased, projectoriented plus group and individual instruction and the progress in learning is documented in a portfolio. Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning. The department for development and further education offers a wide range of courses and vocational training within the educational field and the social and health services, for example continuing education related to: Educational work with children and adolescents Adult disability 4
Social psychiatry Psychiatry Patient-related services in hospitals Practical help and care in municipality Nursing tasks in hospitals. Qualifying job retraining programmes for personas who want to come back on the labour market. Organisation. The college has a management consisting of: The Board, the president, a vice- president and 3 head of departments plus a director of administration. There is a total staff number of around 100 faculty members and administrative professionals. All faculty members are organized in teams that are responsible for developing the concrete syllabi and plans for teaching, instruction, realization and evaluation of defined programs for groups of students. All teachers use a wide range of methodology as instruction, lecturing, individual guidance and councilling and problem based and projectoriented learning in order to provide different possibilites for enhancing learning processes.
