MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN Guide your membership efforts by meeting these goals. DEADLINE DECEMBER 1 20 MORE STUDENTS THAN LAST YEAR 20 ALUMNI 20 PROFESSIONALS Earn ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL by meeting the requirements in any ONE of the categories (students, alumni and professionals) of the Membership Campaign and receive a pennant and certificate. Earn THRIVE LEVEL by meeting the requirements in any TWO of the categories of the Membership Campaign and receive a pennant, plaque, flag and three allocations to attend the THRIVE ACADEMY at ICDC! MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT Participate in events such as conferences, social activities, etc. early so that members have a good experience and share it through word-ofmouth with potential members. Have a contest to see which class can recruit the most alumni, business partners and parents to join your DECA chapter. Become a marketer. Study your demographics, identify students that would be a good fit for your chapter. Send them DECA Grams or personal invitations to join this elite program. Ask your current DECA members to identify potential members (adopt-a-member campaign) personally invite them to a DECA activity. Continue to involve them in chapter activities throughout the year. SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY CHAPTER TEAM COMPETITIVE EVENTS Engage all members and build enthusiasm among new members by starting a chapter team event project early in the year. Have your really successful seniors talk to freshmen/sophomore/junior classes about why they enjoy your program, the benefits of participating in DECA, the thrill of competition, etc. Ask alumni to visit with potential students. Create a bulletin board to post in your high school to promote DECA. Display pictures, trophies, posters and upcoming conference locations. Leverage DECA s competitive events designed for ninth and tenth grade DECA members to bring enthusiasm to underclassmen. Continue to actively involve your counselor and administrator in your program so they can experience DECA first-hand and become a champion for your program. Give them their own DECA t-shirts! Recruit a fellow colleague who is teaching marketing, business, hospitality, finance and entrepreneurship courses to serve as an advisor and encourage those students to join DECA.

Ask DECA members to select underclassmen and invite them to donuts or pizza, and show a slideshow of activities and the DECA promotional video. Hold a chapter or school-wide dress for success day. Create a diamond scavenger hunt throughout the school. Put DECA diamonds on members lockers. Write freshmen s names on diamonds that they can redeem for candy. Hold a tie day to see who can wear the most ties and invite your principal to demonstrate how to tie a tie. Wear as many diamonds as you can on diamond day. Create a diamond trivia game where students find and match questions and answers. Read advertising slogans each day on the announcements, and the first class to buzz in with the correct answer gets a prize such as candy. Distribute coupons to redeem at your school-based enterprise. Show the DECA commercial on your school s TV network. Post the membership video and commercial on Facebook. Tweet a DECA fact of the day for each day of DECA Month. SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY APPOINT A SOCIAL MEDIA CORRESPONDENT Have them sign up at http://www.deca.org/page/ socialmedia. They should write an article about the impact of DECA, submit it to communications@deca.org and then push it out through your chapter s social media. CORPORATE PARTNER CHALLENGES Engage in one of DECA s Corporate Partner Challenges.
SUCCESS STORIES OF ALUMNI Find successful DECA alumni in your community or from your chapter and write up a success story. Submit the success story, photo and email address. Ask these specific questions such as: What do you remember the most about your experiences in DECA while a member of your local chapter? How did your high school DECA experience help you once you entered college and/or your career? What are you currently doing? (title/position, company, overview) COMMUNITY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Connect with your local chamber of commerce or similar organization. Host a community service activity and call it DECA Serve Day. Make a visit with your chapter officers to your local National Advisory Board partners and share information about DECA. Request a proclamation signing from the mayor. Have your chapter officer team deliver presentations about DECA at a business or community meeting. SCHOOL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Ask a business partner to give an industry expert presentation as a guest speaker. Invite business partners to participate actively on your advisory committee. Schedule appointments with elected officials for visits with your chapter members. Conduct a letter writing campaign where your chapter members write letters supporting and explaining DECA. SCHOOL/COMMUNITY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Conduct one activity that is part of your Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan competitive event. Create a scavenger hunt throughout the school where students search for the Global Entrepreneurship Week logo and DECA diamond. Put the Global Entrepreneurship Week logo and DECA diamonds on members lockers. Create an entrepreneurship Internet scavenger hunt. Describe an entrepreneurial trait each day on the announcements. Research colleges and universities that have entrepreneurship degree programs. Host an Apprentice or Shark Tank event at the school. Host a lemonade stand competition where students from across the school participate. Provide coupons with the Global Entrepreneurship Week logo to the school-based enterprise, which is a great example of entrepreneurship in action. Host an entrepreneurship workshop for elementary or middle school students. Invite a local entrepreneur to speak at a chapter meeting or during class. Organize a luncheon with entrepreneurial leaders in the community to visit with DECA members. Host a breakfast lecture series on entrepreneurship, in which members and entrepreneurs interact. CHAPTER IDEAS SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE Organize a drive to collect school supplies to donate to needy students in your community. Work with the counselors in your school and your feeder schools to discreetly identify students who need the supplies. THANKSGIVING BASKETS Work with the counselors at your local elementary school (or your own school) to find out what families might be in need of assistance with obtaining a Thanksgiving meal. Create baskets of food with all the fixings for a traditional meal stuffing, potatoes, pumpkin pie filling, rolls, cranberry sauce, etc. along with a gift certificate to a local grocery store for the fresh items like the turkey. Deliver the baskets or, to preserve anonymity, have the counselors deliver them. SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY JOIN MDA Join the Muscular Dystrophy Association in the fight against muscle disease by connecting with your local MDA office and organizing a serve day for a local family. Connect with your local chapter at www.mda.org. TRICK OR CAN The week before Halloween pass out flyers to homes in the area surrounding your school that ask for non-perishable food items to be picked up on Halloween. On Halloween night have members go to these homes and, instead of collecting treats, collect non-perishable food items for a local food pantry. COATS FOR KIDS Sponsor a coat drive to collect gently used warm winter coats and jackets for children. Donate the collected coats to a local agency serving underprivileged families.
WALK FOR WARMTH Organize a winter walk-a-thon to raise money to help pay the fuel bills of needy people in your community. Create public service announcements to raise awareness of the plight of low-income families who face increased difficulty due to the rising cost of fuel. MIRACLE MINUTE Designate one minute during a school day dedicated to raising as many funds as possible for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. CHANGE FOR A CHANGE In your school-based enterprise, ask if customers want to donate the extra change from their purchase to charity. If you don t have a school store, ask local businesses to participate in the fundraiser. READ WITH ME Partner with a local elementary school and have members read with elementary students one day a week before or after school. ADOPT A MILE Sponsor an Adopt a Mile event. Choose a section of a walking/bike path or roadway and designate a day to pick up the trash. Don t forget to document one form of publicity or promotion to submit with your campaign results. ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN Advocate during Career and Technical Education Month in February. DEADLINE MARCH 2 SCHOOL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES PUBLIC POLICYMAKERS OUTREACH COMMUNITY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Meet the requirements in the Advocacy Campaign during February and receive a pennant, special plaque from DECA s Congressional Advisory Board and a letter of recognition sent to your school administrator and government officials. The goal of DECA s Advocacy Campaign during Career and Technical Education Month in February is to showcase the impact that DECA has in preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs. Throughout all outreach activities, DECA members should communicate our mission and guiding principles. SCHOOL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Ask current members to write testimonials on how DECA has impacted them, and send them to underclassmen who are potential DECA members. Promote DECA to middle school students by conducting a business, marketing, financial literacy or entrepreneurship activity. Deliver a presentation on the impact of DECA to the local school board and/or administrators. Make a promotional kit that highlights the impact of your chapter s activities and share it with teachers, counselors, principals and superintendents. Play the DECA public service announcement over the school s television circuit or post to your school s social media sites. Tweet a benefit of Career and Technical Education each day of #CTEMonth. SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY CONGRESSIONAL ADVISORY BOARD Encourage your U.S. Senator(s) and Representative(s) to join DECA s prestigious Congressional Advisory Board. Make a promotional kit that highlights the impact of DECA and share it with public policymakers.
