PROGRAMM 2 SANTA CRUZ TREKKING WITH THE OPTION TO CLIMB YANAPACCHA (5460m) Level of difficulty Santa Cruz Trekking: Level of difficulty Yanapaccha: Simple Average From 9 th to 14 th October 2013
Because of its easy accessibility and beautiful landscape, the Santa Cruz Trekking is one of the most attractive hike tours in Cordillera Blanca. The path leads us through the rich vegetation of the Santa Cruz valley. The main valley, but also its side valleys, has many deep blue lagoons on every terrace level. The Punta Unión at an altitude of 4 750m is the highest point of the Santa Cruz Trekking. An easy path leads us to the fantastic viewpoint, surrounded by white giants and beautiful nature. Detailed program Tag 1: Acclimatization tour. Ascent to Laguna de Churup The one-day hike is one of the classical acclimatization tours in Cordillera Blanca. After breakfast, we drive from Huaraz to Pitec (around 20km). On our way, we shortly visit the settlements Unchus y Llupa. In Pitec itself, we start our hike tour on an altitude of 3 800m. With a constant acclivity, we follow the path over a crest similar to a moraine. After around 1 hour, our path goes leaves the moraine, with some even parts, but also some slight acclivity towards a slightly exposed rock. The path is easily visible and the tricky parts aided with fixed ropes. After 3 hours, we reach the Laguna de Churup at 4 485m. The turquoise lake got its name from the glaciated summit Churup, which majestically looms over the lake. We enjoy the breathtaking view on round rocks (Duration approx. 5-6 hours). Day 2: Huaraz Cashapampa Laguna Ichiccocha.- We leave Huaraz on time and drive with a private transport towards Carhuaz, Yungay and Caraz. We leave the main valley and drive over a dusty road to the little village Cashapampa (2900m). Once there, we start our ascent to the Santa Cruz valley. We overcome the 900m height difference on a good path and reach the wide and rather flat high-valley Santa Cruz. Unhurriedl, we approach Laguna Ichicocha and are close to our first resting place Llamacorral on 3800m. (Duration approx. 4 hours) Day 3: Laguna Ichiccocha Quebrada Arhuaycocha Taullipampa- We walk further through the wide river valley and approach the Laguna Jatuncocha. Now the terrain becomes stony and scanty. At Quisuar, we take the zigzag path to Quebrada Arhuaycocha, a valley where the glaciers Alpamayo, Quitaraju, Pucahircas and Rinrihirca end. Now, we choose a shortcut that brings us directly to our second resting place. The Taullipamapa (4300m) is very idyllic and the perfect place to linger. (Duration approx. 6 hours)
Day 4: Taullipampa Punta Unión Paria During our ascent to Punta Union (4750m), we are accompanied by the steep ice walls of Taulliraju. From there, we enjoy the fantastic view. The way down to Huaripampa valley is first winding around high rocks and later over small ledges, until we reach the rich vegetation. We pitch our tents in the slightly wooded valley in Paria on 3 280m. (Duration 6 hours) Day 5: Paria Vaquería Campo Morrena des Nevado Yanapaccha.- The path leads us further down the valley. We pass many small settlements and get an impression of the locals very simple way of life and experience the Andinos tradition. A short ascent brings us to the settlement Vaqueria on 3700m (Duration 3hours). Our driver is waiting here and we drive to Punta Portachuelo (4775m). This pass gives us once more a breathtaking view to Pisco and its neighbor summits. The street with numerous turns leads us to km 82. Here, our carriers will help us to bring the material to Campo Morena del Yanapaccha on 4950m. The ascent is short with little height difference. (Duration 2 hours). PLEASE NOTE: Participants that do not want to climb Yanapaccha move on with their retourn trip to Huaraz. Day 6: Campo Morrena del Nevado Yanapaccha Ascent of Yanapaccha Huaraz. The Yanapaccha is not very high, but the ascent is a nice challenge for all those loving technically more demanding tours. The ascent takes around 5 hours. About 2 rope lengths are technically demanding, but walking on the crest rewards with a spectacular view at the Cordillera Blanca. The descent is simple and we reach Campo Morrena easily. Our bus brings us back to Huaraz within 3 hours.
