the key numbers of the agricultural sector in Africa agriculture covers on average: 60% of the jobs, 45% of the areas, and 13% of the GDP (50% in some countries) in Sub-Saharan Africa FAO, World Bank, 2013 agriculture is the main source of revenues for 60% of the agricultural population World Bank 2013 in order to improve the agriculture in the developing countries, it is necessary to: rise the productivity modernize the value chain promote the local demand FAO, World Bank, 2013 the agricultural market might reach 1000 billion of dollars by 2030 whereas it currently represents 313 billion of dollars World Bank 2013 870 million of people suffer from hunger in Africa 86% of arable lands in Sub-Saharan Africa are not exploited World Bank 2013 8

mobile agriculture is an opportunity in Africa to improve the value chain s productivity the connected agriculture represents : the ICT development in Africa is twice faster than in any other place in the world, especially for the mobile technologies: 60% of the 400 000 African villages have been covered. the 3 development axis of Orange s m-agri services to improve farmers revenues to increase agricultural productivity to broadly strengthen the value chain to have access to the updated markets prices for the crops and the cattle through mobile phone through SMS or vocally in order to better negociate and optimize ones trips to save money and safely pay and to have access to financial services / microcredit through Orange Money to find buyers thanks to the mobile service that virtually puts in contact the supply and demand to allow the massive sending of advices / information through SMS or vocal messages to send environmental, meteorological warnings to create professionals / buyers / sellers directory and their geo-localization to collect and process the field data in real time through mobile/tablet in order to improve the statistics and to anticipate the needs to enable the vehicles and goods logistical follow-up through «machine to machine» solutions 11

markets prices information service «I save at least 3 trips a month thanks to the information on the markets price» Orange Niger gives the agricultural commodities and cattle s prices on 57 markets thanks to the Labaroun Kassoua mobile service 14

markets prices information service did you know that? «Labaroun Kassoua» is a service that gives to the rural world s stakeholders the access to the informations on the agricultural commodities prices and on the cattle s prices on all the main markets in Niger by sending through a SMS the word «market» or «cattle» at the 139 phone number in French and in Haoussa - through USSD by dialing the #139# or through a vocal call at 139 with an Orange s mobile phone why using this service? to facilitate ones choice of the markets for the products sale/purchase to optimize ones trips near the markets; when the resale prices are low, one can decide to not use the transportation cost: 50 FCFA/ request: 20 FCFA/minute how does it work? SMS, interactive vocal server, USSD, web back-office management tell me more commercial launch in Niger since 2011 with the RECA and the SIM B 15

financial service «villager granary: I m learning how to save money in order to anticipate my hunger gaps and I use my mobile phone to gradually repay my agricultural microcredit» MicroCred has summed around 130 000 customers for a credit of more than 83 million of euros in its African affiliates (Madagascar, Senegal, Mali, Côte d Ivoire, Niger) 16

agricultural advices call-center «I dial 37333 and without moving, I ve got answers in Bambara on how planting my hectare of millet» Orange Mali has launched an agricultural call-center which is accessible at the 37333 from 8.30 am to 7 pm 18

data collect service «I optimize the collect of my truck from the small producers thanks to the informations the farmers communicate up» in Madagascar, LECOFRUIT has a fleet of 40 trucks, a network of hundreds of producers, on a land with 6 regions and 58 production areas 26
