Established since 2009 Dual PhD Programme University of Malaya is always looking to innovate. True to its motto in being a leader in research and innovation, UM s Dual PhD programme is just an example of how it pursues higher education innovations to the next level. It has succeeded to graduate five candidates in the last two years in partnership with University of Sydney, a member of the prestigious Group of 8 universities in Australia and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), a young upand-coming university in the UK. The collaboration benefits both UM and the partner universities in many ways. Among them is the shared IP as well as joint publications. In the long term, the collaboration expands to other areas as well as other researchers. So the collaboration does not stop when the duration of the PhD is over. The candidates and supervisors from both institutions act as a conduit for collaborative projects that will go beyond the duration of the programme. Each of the collaboration is unique as it is tailor-made according to the requirements of each institution and researchers. With this programme, candidates spend less money as compared to studying full-time overseas. Candidates will spend half the time overseas and the other half in UM. The supervisors too have the opportunity to conduct research visits at each other s university. To date, 17 candidates have benefitted from this programme. Five successfully graduated in 2013 and 2014. Currently there are 12 active candidates who are pursuing the Dual PhD studies in the various partner universities. The candidates who graduate from the programme will receive either two certificates, both certificates must acknowledge the collaboration; or a single certificate with two institution names Currently, UM has established this programme with 15 partner universities from all over the world.
