Youth Budget Santa Monica Youth: A Substantial Investment The City of Santa Monica makes a substantial investment in our youth, from cradle to career. In FY 2015-16, approximately $42.9 million will be spent on programs that support the health and wellbeing of children from birth to age 24, with an additional $750,000 set aside as financial assistance for program participants from low income households. Programs are provided directly by the City and through innovative partnerships with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and nonprofit organizations. This investment is funded by the City s General Fund ($38.5 million), programgenerated user fees ($3.2 million), and other resources such as local grants, public/private partnerships, and development agreements ($1.2 million). We make this investment each year because supporting the healthy development of our youth benefits the entire community. By equipping young people with the tools needed to thrive, we are shaping future generations of engaged citizens that will contribute to Santa Monica s economic vitality and strengthen our sense of community. Youth Wellbeing: A Common Agenda Demographics: About Our Youth $0.2 0.6% Youth Budget by Program Type (in millions) $16.5 38.5% $8.0 18.7% $4.0 9.4% $12.3 28.5% $1.9 4.3% SMMUSD Funding Mental Health, Safety & Support Services Early Childhood Development Culture & Recreation Employment & Skills Development Policy, Administration & Information We know Santa Monica to be a relatively safe community full of opportunity. Santa Monica s second Youth Wellbeing Report Card (2014) indicates so, as over 90% of our students graduate high school and 87% are proficient or higher in early literacy by the end of kindergarten. However, despite some of our successes, some of our youth are vulnerable. For example, only 17.6% of SMMUSD students entering Santa Monica College place in college-level English and Math and over one fourth of teens report symptoms of depression. We take the wellbeing of our youth seriously. Our Cradle to Career Initiative is a collective impact approach to creating a community where every child has opportunity to thrive. The City, School District, Santa Monica College, and nonprofit partners have been working together to identify action steps that address key areas of concern among our youth,

Youth Budget including early childhood development, emotional health and social connections, and college and career readiness. Moving forward, the financial investment we make in our youth will be directly aligned with the goals identified through the Cradle to Career Initiative, paving the way for greater transparency and accountability on our progress. For more information on the Youth Wellbeing Report Card, the Cradle to Career Initiative, and a detailed breakdown of youth budget expenditures, please visit www.santamonicacradletocareer.org.
