Chabot - Las Positas Community College District * Hayward, California 98 LVN to RN Program Volume 1 Issue 2 November, 2007 Licensed Vocational Nurses LVN to RN Program Chabot College offers a program to assist Licensed Vocational Nurses to achieve eligibility to sit the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX RN). Licensed Vocational Nurses who hold a current license to practice in California and are currently working full time (one year) as a LVN, are eligible for the program. It is possible to earn an Associate in Arts degree while completing the program, although it is not a requirement for eligibility to take the NCLEX RN Licensing exam. Advanced Standing or Re-Admission Working Conditions and Earnings Registered Nurses have the opportunity to work in a number of clinical and community settings. In private industry, most nursing salaries are above the average for nonsupervisory personnel. Salaries of nurses in acute care hospitals of the Bay Area for a new graduate average $60,000 to $68,000 annually. Fringe benefits normally include paid holidays, sick leave, paid vacation, continuing education leave, as well as health insurance and a retirement pension. Chabot offers LVNs the opportunity for career advancement Inside this issue: Getting Started 2 Three Programs 2 Application Process 3 Advanced Standing Advanced standing status is the second year nursing curriculum granted to students who have previously completed any portion of the defined Nursing curriculum, or its equivalent. Placement is made on a space-available basis. Complete the application and follow the same steps as LVN to RN. If the student desires an AA Degree, it is also necessary to contact a counselor for evaluation of general education requirements. What does the Program cost? Re-Admission to Chabot Students who have previously attended the Chabot Nursing program must apply within two years of leaving the program. The steps are the same as LVN to RN for entering the program. Clinical Studies/Skills 4 Program Selection 5 Program Admittance 5 Clinical Courses 6 Application 7 Information Meetings Monthly The total cost of the one year program for in-state resident is approximately $2,500*. This includes class fees, books, uniforms, shoes and in-program testing fees. Financial aid is available. Personal physician or nurse practitioner physical and dental examinations with current immunizations and TB testing are required prior to entering the program as well as a background check and drug screen. Transportation to and from hospitals or other agencies is the responsibility of the student. Nursing Theory All LVN and transfer students must have prior nursing theory validated by the nationally normed and standardized ATI exams as outlined inside. There is a non-refundable cost of $50 for each of the four exams. *All costs are approximate and subject to change. Volume 1 Issue 2 Courses required for the AA Degree in Nursing Three Program Options Available Decide your option There are three options for your upgrade to Registered Nurse. If you are choosing option one or three, it is better to take no more than two courses per semesters rather than over extend yourself. Chabot offers a Associate Arts Degree in Nursing. All graduates are eligible to take the Registered Nursing NCLEX Exam. Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 The end of all Earn an AA Degree To receive an AA Degree, you will need to complete all of the pre-requisite science courses and Nursing 70. In addition to the Nursing program sequence the following courses are required by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and must be completed: Psychology 1 or 50 English 1A, English 4, 7, 52B, or Business 10 or French 2A or 2B, Sociology 1 or 31, and Speech 1 or 30 Chabot College degree requirements must also be met to earn the Associate in Arts Degree in Nursing. It is necessary to contact a counselor for evaluation of general education requirements. Call 510.723.6718 for an appointment. The 30 Semester Unit Complete the 30 specifically designated semester units of prerequisite science courses and Nursing 70. Other degree and general education requirements are not required under this option. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN Licensing exam ONLY in California. At the present time, employment options after graduation are limited to the State of California. Regardless of whether you eventually continue your education and complete your degree your RN license will always be stamped 30 Unit Option. This option is offered and accepted ONLY in the State of California and the actual nursing curriculum is identical in scope and length of time as in Options 1 and 3 Non-Degree Complete all courses in the nursing program which are considered to be a component of the nursing program as approved by the Board of Registered Nursing. This option allows the student who has completed the nursing courses (but not all the general education courses required for the AA degree) to sit the licensing exam without the degree. Again regardless of whether you continue your education to receive a degree your RN license will always be stamped Non-Degree. education should surely be service to others. Cesar E. Chavez Are you ready? Page 3

LVN to RN Program Preparation for Clinical Studies Skills Lab Policy If any part of the Skills Lab written exams are failed three times, students may not progress in the examination process. The student will then be advised to apply as a beginning student in the Nursing Program. The passing score for the math exam is 90%. The Skills Lab exam may not be taken more than two times; the passing score for the skills exam is 75%. Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) tests are used to assess knowledge and facilitate program placement. You may take these tests while completing Physiology and Microbiology or while enrolled in Nursing 70. There are four on-line tests: Fundamentals of Nursing, Nursing Care of Children, Maternal Newborn Nursing and Pharmacology assessment exams. These tests are required. In addition, if you have completed a nine week RN psychiatric nursing course you will take the ATI Mental Health Nursing test. The passing score for all tests is the 50th percentile. Please note no more then two (2) attempts may be made on the assessment exams and test scores are valid for two (2) years. After successfully passing the all four tests, you will be eligible for validation of clinical skills. Testing is scheduled with the Skills Laboratory Clinical Assistant, Room 3116, 510.723.6953. Each initial test is $50. Costs include a study guide and DVD. These guides and DVDs will help you prepare for the actual test. Validation of Clinical Skills Prior to enrollment in the nursing program, your clinical practice skills must be validated in a hospital based exam. This test will determine if your skills are equivalent to that of generic students completing the first two semesters of the nursing program. For a detailed description of the above testing sequence, please obtain a copy of the Advanced Standing Performance Examination Guidelines available from the bookstore on the Chabot campus. Hospital Performance Page 4 The Nursing Program at Chabot College is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Hospital Based Exam Policy If the hospital-based examination is failed, the applicant may repeat it ONE time for an additional fee $190. A second failure will result in the applicant being counseled to apply as a beginning student in the Nursing Program. This fee for the hospital exam is $190. This non-refundable fee is payable prior to testing. The validation of clinical skills includes 3 parts: 1. Written tests covering dosage calculation and therapeutic communication ability. 2. A Skills Laboratory Exam to assess ability to perform first year nursing skills. 3. A hospital based patient care exam addressing safety, organization, and communication. Testing for part 1 and 2 is scheduled with the Skills Laboratory Clinical Assistant at Chabot or our extended campus in Livermore. Testing part 3 will be coordinated through a designated nursing faculty member. A cancellation fee will be charged if the student reschedules the hospital examination.
