Hello Friends, I was sitting in my man cave recently reading our 100th Anniversary yearbook and I had to get up and close the window because I was getting a cool breeze. What are we in for next? I hope we still get a little Indian Summer. I hope you all received an e-blast for our joint ASPE/ASSE September meeting and were able to attend the ASPE Product Show in Rolling Meadows on 9-16-2015, at the Meridian Banquet Conference Center. I had a presentation from 11:30 to 12:30. You can see a few pictures of it in the newsletter. Our ASSE monthly meeting was a short one at 5:00 in the seminar room at which time John Bojan presented me with a plaque in honor of my service to ASSE. Thanks, John! The product show ran before and after our meeting from 3:30 to 8:00, ninety exhibits were on display, and dinner was included. The American Society of Plumbing Engineers will be gracious to us again and afford us a joint meeting with them at their October meeting on the North side at the Villa on North Pulaski Rd. There will be a reduced rate of $15.00 for admission with a nice meal included, watch newsletter for details. Let's try to make some new friends with our sister organization, don't forget we have a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with them. We are not merely stewards of society, we protect society from society, we fly under one flag so to say. THE PLUMBER PROTECTS THE HEALTH OF THE NATION AND THE PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER IS IN THE SAME BOAT WITH US. Our skill, our knowledge, and our trade is paramount to the communities we serve, people are unprotected with out us. We are a consortium of professionals that are resolute, steadfast, firmly determined in purpose, and true to our trade. Our actions significantly impact the masses, people in general depend on us. Keep up the good work! PREVENTION RATHER THAN CURE is what we do and what we are. See you soon. Sincerely, President Michael McGaughan

As Vice President of ASSE Illinois Chapter, I would like to complement President Michael McGaughan for a superb job in explaining the definition and issues with Sanitation, at the 43rd Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers product Show and Continuing Education. I have nothing but praise for President McGaughan. He was well prepared on the subject. When talking to some attendees after the class some stated they were impressed with your stories and explanations of "what is Sanitation". They believe being Sister Organizations that we should have more meetings for educational credits with ASSE, ASPE, and Plumbing Inspectors from the State, County, and Local municipalities. The complements about our organization getting involved with education could be a new frontier. Again I applaud you ASSE, President Michael McGaughan. I am sure we will benefit from this seminar for years to come. Thanks for all you did to make it possible. Regards, Gary W. Howard V.P. ASSE Illinois Chapter THE KNOWLEDGE of PLUMBING To understand Plumbing you must understand the plumbing fixture first. What is its designed use? How many fixtures Units is required for the operation of the fixture? Every fixture has a Drainage fixture unit outlet. a. One drainage fixture is defined as 7.5 gallons of water per minute! When figuring your loss in pressure for your water lines, every 2 feet in height in a building or structure drops the water pressure by about 1 pound per square inch. Water system design, then, must account for water flows (in gallons per minute), pressure drop from friction in pipes and from elevation changes (in psi) and water velocity (in feet per minute). These varying factors, along with never knowing which combination of plumbing fixtures will require water at the same time makes the water system design complicated. Similar to sewer design discussed above, the concept of the water service fixture unit (WSFU) helps simplify the process. The Code lists WSFUs for cold water, hot water and total water for each type of plumbing fixture. Then the design water flow in gpm

can be found for any section of piping in the system. The flow chart in your code book, then shows the pipe size and friction loss options. This section explains the theory, but doesn't give enough information to actually do the design. That s up to the person doing the design. Another basic concept you should understand about water systems is the pressure loss with height. I recommend you memorize that one psi equals about 2 feet of height gain. So a 50' raise from the ground floor to the 4th floor will drop the water pressure by 25psi. If your public water system provides 45 psi at street level, you will have 20 psi at the 4th floor. Since 20 psi is about the minimum water pressure often recommended, this would work. Is this true or false? False What about the height of the water service? Should that be figured in also? Yes If the watermain is ten feet in the ground, and you install the service at the five foot minimum it s still ten feet down. If the building proposed is an 8 story, what happens? We have a 100' rise, which gives about a 50psi pressure drop. Since we are only starting with 45 psi, we won't be getting any water up to the 8th floor. Thus we'd need a booster pump. Gary W. Howard Sept. 16, 2015 750-176 C1
