Volume 13, Winter 2014 Edition Stabiloc Provides Key to Manhole Security Laperle foundry has partnered with Stabiloc LCC of the U.S. to develop a superior locking manhole system providing secure utilities access. In 2013 this system was chosen for three high profile projects in Ontario. Information on the product: The Stabiloc is a patented lock device which is inserted vertically through the manhole cover into a receiver orienting a lever arm parallel with the wall of the manhole cover frame. A unique bolt, which can only be operated with a special socket, tightens this lever arm up against the underside of the frame seat, preventing removal of the cover. The Stabiloc is designed to use two locks, opposite one another, inserted into holes cut into the cover. On the underside of the cover a special receiver is retrofitted to accept the lock. Laperle engineers took this original concept and improved upon it immensely by casting the receiver directly into the cover. Further a latch was cast into the underside of the cover, opposite the lock, which hooks under the frame. With this Laperle design only one locking device is required per cover and the separate receivers are eliminated altogether, greatly simplifying the installation process and reducing cost. Projects : Canadian Forces Base Borden is located approximately 100 kilometers north of Toronto. On average 15,000 military personnel are trained here annually on a base comprising 21,000 acres of land, including a 6000 acre training area and 460 buildings. Scattered throughout are over 100 manhole vaults housing vital communications infrastructure. The need for securing these manholes was obvious; a solution however, was not. Previous efforts included using a pan locking device inserted under the cover. These resemble the round, flying saucer sleds we used as kids with a common padlock at the bottom which attached the device to the ladder of the manhole. These quickly filled with water and in winter this water froze encasing the locks in ice. In order to access the vault the ice had to be chipped away to unlock the padlock. These devices ultimately proved to be more useful for tobogganing and were eventually stacked up in a warehouse on the base somewhere. Bibby Ste Croix offered the solution with Stabiloc. The existing covers on the base were measured and it was determined they were comprised of three different configurations which are included in the Laperle catalogue. New replacement covers were manufactured to fit the existing frames incorporating Stabilocs with a proprietary bolt head that was specifically Continued on page 2

Page 2 Continued from cover page designed solely for the use of the Canadian military. At the request of forces personnel the words BASE COMMS were cast into the covers for easy identification and to eliminate confusion with other manholes on the base. All of the Stabiloc replacement covers fit perfectly and were successfully installed in no time at all. Communications Security Establishment Canada is Canada s National Cryptologic Agency. CSEC employs code makers and code breakers to provide the Government of Canada with IT security and foreign signals Forces Base Borden intelligence services. Due to an increased workforce as a response to changing security priorities, a new purpose built facility of 72,000 square meters was recently completed in Ottawa, housing over 2000 employees. Given the sensitive nature of protecting our national security, all manhole structures involved with the complex were locked down using Stabilocs. Laperle provided water, storm, and sewer manhole covers and frames with Stabilocs, as well as CSEC catchbasin grates and frames, which was a first for this product. Another high profile project, the Forensic Services and Coroner s Complex, was recently completed in Toronto. The Center of Forensic Sciences, the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service all occupy this state of the art facility contributing to the public safety network and supporting the criminal justice system. Again the Stabiloc, with its patented bolt design, was chosen to provide secure utilities access with frames and covers complete with Stabilocs installed. Given the success of these recent installations and with heightened awareness of security issues, the market for this system is anticipated to grow over the coming years in Ontario and beyond, presenting an excellent opportunity for Bibby with a unique, value added product. Mike Anderson, Municipal Sales Representative, Ontario Forensic Services and Coroner s Complex Contract renewed at Laperle Foundry Last November and December negotiations took place in Drummondville to renew the collective agreement at Laperle Foundry. The agreement was set to expire on the 31st of December. After eight meetings where the discussions were intense but constructive, we came to an agreement in principle on the 19th of December. The collective agreement was accepted by 70.3% of the members present at the vote on January 12th. The Union Representatives were: Claude Langlois, a Union Representative, Rémi Guertin, President, Rodrigue Joubert and Jean Lahaie. The Employer Representatives were: Peter Crofton, VP/GM, Mathieu Fréchette, Plant Manager Laperle Foudry, Dany Collard, Plant Manager Bibby Ste Croix and Catherine Lussier, Human Resources Chief. The two parties agreed to a collective agreement with a 6 year contract, including various adjustments to maintain the competitiveness of Laperle Foundry and to ensure advantageous working conditions and a friendly working environment for the years to come. We congratulate everyone from both teams who participated in the negotiations and who consistently negotiated in good faith and in accordance with the regulations. Mathieu Fréchette and Catherine Lussier

After my first experience in the steel industry, mostly with ArcelorMittall, I am enthusiastically returning to the region to contribute to the growth of the foundry. A pleasant surprise has been the warm personalities of the members of the company. The plant is also impressive, extremely well thought out and effective, despite the space constraints. I am very pleased to be a part of the team. Marian Robitaille replaces Jessy Houle during her maternity leave I am very happy to join the Bibby Ste Croix team in the department of health, safety and environment. I have had several assistant administrative positions and it is a privilege to put these skills to the service of Bibby. I am originally from Quebec City, but moved to the small village of Lotbiniere four years ago. Thanks for your warm welcome. A well-deserved retirement for Yvon St-jean Yvon St Jean left Laperle Foundry last December for a welldeserved retirement after almost 30 years of service. With unequaled resourcefulness, Yvon had a reputation of being able to rebuild a machine using only a pin and some duct tape (That, fortunately, we have never had to test ) Thank you very much Yvon and best of luck Of 500 members, only 6 people have sent us photos. Given the lack of participants for this project, we have decided to abandon the project. We wanted you to do your part and share. Page 6 5-30 Health and Wellness Challenge to Improve one s Lifestyle Habits. The Health Challenge is 6 weeks of motivation to improve one s lifestyle habits! Basically, the Health Challenge means setting 3 goals on your own, from March 1 to April 11:. 1 st Objective 5 5 parts of fruits and vegetables per day. However, the minimum recommanded for adults is 7 parts per day. Because they are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre, fruit and vegetables are a health insurance plan for the long term. They also have the added perk of not containing much fat and calories, while brimming with taste and flavour. 1 part is one fruit or one vegetable, 1 cup of leafy vegetable (e.g. lettuce), 1/2 cup of frozen or cutted fruit or vegetables, 1/4 cup of dried fruit or 1/2 cup of 100% juice. 2 nd Objective 30 Doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day for a minimum of 5 days a week. And for children, it is at least 60 minutes per day. Get moving because It s fun; to feel better and have more energy; to be in shape; to prevent or control certain health problems; it relaxes and reduces stress. 3 rd Objective Wellness Finding wellness helps you take on the demands of day to day life, manage stress, and have rewarding relationships with others and yourself! No matter what your age or physical/mental state, you can improve your wellness! Marcelle Brisson, Communication Committee Drink Water, It s Good for You! Did you know that the body needs somewhere between 2 to 2.5 litres of water per day to function well? Of this amount, between 1 and 1.5 litres (about 6 to 9 glasses) should come from water that is drank periodically throughout the day. The amount increases when people are doing physical activity, are sick, or during hot weather. Thirst, dark urine and dry mouth may be signs of dehydration. Be aware that certain drinks, even if they are composed of water, such as coffee, tea, alcohol, and soft drinks, can lead to dehydration. Within humans, 83% of our blood is composed water, the muscles, heart and brain are 75% water, the lungs 86%, kidneys 83%, bones 22% and the eyes 95%. The beneficial effects of water are numerous: increases the amount of oxygen delivered to cells, moisturizes the skin, regulates body temperature, eliminates waste and toxins, improves the natural healing processes of the body, provides some calcium, some potassium, and some magnesium, and other minerals. Here is a small challenge for 2014: drink a glass of water at sunrise, at dinner and at bedtime. This way, you can drink half your daily requirements. It requires no effort, no cost, and is only beneficial. Update of NAV De From gauche left to à droite: right: Hélène Hélène Proulx, Proulx, Jacynthe Jacynthe Bédard, Bédard, Danielle Danielle Lemay, Lemay, Dominic Dominic Charest, Charest, Manon Manon Dubois, Dubois, Ghislain Ghislain Dubé, Dubé Alain and Alain Beaudet Beaudet Some of you have noticed the new interface for Navision, our integrated management information tool (ERP). Of course, there was a reason for this change: after 7 years, the version we were using had become obsolete and was no longer supported by Microsoft. Fortunately, the switch to the latest version of the program brings benefits. The first being an improvement in the performance of the system. This aspect now allows us to have a better understanding of the costs of our products. In addition, the appearance and operation of Microsoft Dynamics NAV are identical to those of Microsoft Office. I took the opportunity to thank and congratulate the team of "super users" who have worked very hard and given a lot of their time over the last 6 months in order to minimize the impact: Alain Beaudet, production, Jacynthe Bedard, accounting, Dominic Charest, accounting, Ghislain Dubé, IT Mgr, Manon Dubois, purchasing, Philippe Labrecque, IT and Danielle Lemay Inside Sales. The conversion, carried out from January 17th to the 19th, 2014, has been a success and with the help of everyone, we will continue to improve the use of this management tool. Audit of the 2013 Financial Statements The auditors of the accounting firm PWC came to our offices during the last two weeks of February. No major errors have been detected and again this year, they have been impressed by our preparation and our collaboration during the audit. I would like to thank everyone equally from Ste Croix, St Ours, Hamilton and Medicine Hat because in doing your job in a rigorous and conscientious way, you contributed to the integrity of the data giving Management good financial information. Congratulations to all and keep up the good work! Hélène Proulx, Financial Controller Page 7 Oak Bay High School, Victoria, C.B. This project is being done by Erb Technical Contracting. Dave Erb chose to use Bibby Ste Croix Soil Pipe and Fittings products, as well as Wade Drains because of the relationship we have built with him over the years. Dave s loyalty to Bibby Ste Croix is a testament to what we do best and that is to build the success of our company off the relationships we forge, strengthen and maintain over the years. In presenting Erb Tech with the opportunity to use Soil Pipe and Wade Drains products, they did not even think twice, Dave was on board from the get go, in fact Erb asked if a wholesaler that was a non stocking distributor be able to sell the drain line to him. Wade and that distributor agreed and we are now in the process of supplying this project and I am proud to say we have also been awarded three more projects with Erb Tech. Page 8 Detectable Warning Plates As you already know, a business survival in the world today is dependent upon its ability to adapt to the many challenges imposed in an increasingly, rapid changing society. What was good yesterday is not necessarily good today causing people to constantly ask What is it that will be good tomorrow?" With this understanding, we re trying to follow this evolution so we do not find ourselves behind these changes with an insurmountable hill to climb. The people who work with us ensure we make a lot of internal changes (equipment, training, environment, etc.), but few realize that we also try to follow the market trends. Mindful of the changes over the past few years, we have developed various new markets which today are part of our sales strategy (a snow plow runner, urban equipment, industrial parts, and countless innovations in the municipal field and plumbing). In 2013, the latest novelty for the OEM has been a new frame and grid set for airports, with a sales forecast of around 30 sets this year. In 2014, we are developing a new line of products that will respond to an emerging need in the municipal market: detectable warning plates for the visually impaired. These grates can be detected with a walking stick and will be installed as a warning at the intersections of sidewalks and streets and on the approach to any footbridge. We will be the first Canadian producers of these products which are already widely used across the United States and that will likely become mandatory in the near future for all new municipal buildings.
