The 2014 SMCC Foundation Scholarship Awards Athletics FRANK P. PRETI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Frank P. Preti was a well-known Portland attorney and a 1916 National Champion Cross Country Runner. These awards are given students that have earned the title of Most Valuable Participants in each of the intercollegiate sports teams. TIMOTHY D. HAGERMAN SCHOLARSHIP Timothy David Hagerman was a basketball player and member of the SMCC teams that won back-to-back Yankee Small College Conference Championships in 2007 and 2008. Hagerman embodied the true meaning of school spirit. This award is to be given to a returning men s basketball player who puts his team before himself and is a positive member of the school community. Communications and New Media COMMUNICATIONS AND NEW MEDIA PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP This fund supports second-year students in the Communication and New Media program. DONALD E. WOODWARD SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established by family members in memory of Professor Donald E. Woodward, one of the founders and a visionary of the New Media Department. This award will recognize academic achievement for a second-year student in the New Media program. MAINE ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS SCHOLARSHIP The Maine Broadcasters Foundation provides funding for the Maine Association of Broadcasters Scholarship, which supports students who are pursuing a career in broadcast television engineering. The award is given to a Communications & New Media student from Maine. THAXTON COMMUNICATIONS AND NEW MEDIA SCHOLARSHIP Established by Steve Thaxton, with a matching grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation, this scholarship provides support to a student in the Communications and New Media Program.

Criminal Justice DANIEL CASHMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Cashman family gives this memorial scholarship annually to outstanding Criminal Justice students in memory of NYC-PD Captain Daniel Cashman. SERGEANT DANIEL F. CASHMAN USMC SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given to an honorably discharged veteran student in the Criminal Justice Program. WOLCOTT S. GAINES SR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This annual award to a Criminal Justice student is given in memory of Mr. Gaines a Maine State Police Lieutenant who also served as chair of the Law Enforcement program here at SMCC. Culinary Arts ACF CASCO BAY CULINARY ASSOCIATION WILFRED BERIAU SCHOLARSHIP The ACF Casco Bay Culinary Association awards these scholarships for aspiring culinarians. The Association s Board of Directors and members are proud to recognize Wil Beriau for his 26 years of commitment to SMCC, the American Culinary Federation, and his tireless work in promoting the professionalism of culinary arts throughout his career. REDMOND FAMILY FOUNDATION - Culinary This scholarship was created by a generous gift from the Redmond Family Foundation and supports culinary arts students. OAKHURST DAIRY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given in memory of Donald H. Bennett, former Oakhurst President and greater Portland civic leader. Awards support students in Culinary Arts, Dietetic Technology and Hospitality Management programs. WILLIAM B. SCHNEIDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship honors the memory of William B. Schneider who had been a student in the culinary arts program. The scholarship supports students in the Culinary Arts program. Dietetic Technology JOAN ROONEY CONNORS SCHOLARSHIP Established in honor of Joan Rooney Connors by her family, this scholarship is awarded to a student in the Dietetic Technology program. Fire Science CHET E. WILES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Chet E. Wiles Memorial Scholarship was established to serve as a legacy to his commitment to training and education of Maine firefighters. The scholarship is given to Fire Science students and fire department members, with priority given to applicants from resource-poor communities and fire departments facing financial barriers of attendance. DARYL P. WELLS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is supported through an endowment established by the Augusta Fire Department and Professional Firefighters

Local 1650 in memory of SMTC Fire Science student and professional firefighter, Daryl P. Wells. The scholarship is awarded to Fire Science students who demonstrate a particular interest and passion for firefighter training and public safety education. STEPHEN G. HASSON SCHOLARSHIP The Stephen G. Hasson Scholarship was established in 1995 in honor of Steve G. Hasson upon his retirement as State Fire Administrator at SMCC. This scholarship is awarded to full-time Fire Science students who demonstrate interest and involvement in the area of fire and life safety education and community risk reduction. TIM CARR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was created in memory of SMCC Fire Science faculty member Tim Carr. Tim was a career firefighter with the South Portland Fire Department where he retired as captain. This award is given to a fire science student from a Maine fire department who demonstrates a strong academic effort and desire to succeed. WILLIAM WARREN SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established to honor William Warren, former SMCC Vice President and Academic Dean, whose 30-year tenure was a testament to educational leadership and service to community. The scholarship supports fire science students Heating, AC, Refrigeration & Plumbing CARL R. FLINK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Friends and family of the late Carl R. Flink endowed this scholarship in his memory. For over thirty years, Carl served as department chair, instructor and in numerous capacities at SMVTI, including Director of the Energy Testing Lab. The scholarship is given to Heating & Air Conditioning or Plumbing students with academic merit and financial need. REFRIGERATION SERVICE ENGINEERS SOCIETY OF MAINE SCHOLARSHIP The RSES of Maine established these scholarships which are given to students in the Heating & Air Conditioning, Plumbing or Refrigeration Programs based on academic merit and financial need Horticulture MAINE LANDSCAPE AND NURSERY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP This award supports a student in the Horticulture program intending to make a career in horticulture in Maine. RICHARD CHURCHILL SCHOLARSHIP Richard Churchill was Department Chair and instructor in the Plant Science Technology (PST) Program from 1972 until 1998. He was an industry leader and helped to develop ornamental horticulture in Southern Maine. This award is given annually to students in the Horticulture program based on academic merit and need. ST. MARY S GARDEN CLUB OF FALMOUTH SCHOLARSHIP This association award supports full-time students in the Horticulture program who are Maine residents. Hospitality Management LAFAYETTE HOTELS / HOLIDAY INN BY THE BAY SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 2011, this award is administered by the Foundation for Maine s Community Colleges and honors Gus Tilman and Peter Daigle for their many years serving the hospitality industry in Maine. The recipient will be a second-year student enrolled in the Hospitality Management program. OAKHURST DAIRY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given in memory of Donald H. This award is given to a student in Integrated Manufacturing Technology program. GRAINGER TOOLS FOR TOMORROW SCHOLARSHIP The Grainger Tools for Tomorrow program works to make it easier for students interested in a skilled trade career to get the training they need to join the industrial trade work force. This award is given to second-year students in technical education programs based on academic achievement and leadership. INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING SCHOLARSHIP This new scholarship was made possible by an initial generous donation from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. The IM Program Scholarship welcomes donors who wish to support students in the integrated manufacturing program. Recipients are selected by the IM Faculty based on need, GPA, and commitment to the IM field. J. KELTON SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established by Joshua Kelton of Maine Parts & Machine to provide need-based support to deserving SMCC students seeking a career in manufacturing. MAINE CHARITABLE MECHANIC ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded annually with preference for a student in a Technology or trade program. UTC METAL TRADES SCHOLARSHIP The UTC Metal Trades Scholarship is funded by United Technologies Company, the parent company of Pratt & Whitney, which is located in North Berwick. The scholarship is awarded to promising Integrated Manufacturing Technology students with preference given to Southern Maine residents. Nursing AL & ELEANOR GEORGE SCHOLARSHIP Established through a bequest to the Maine Community College System in 2005, this scholarship is awarded to Maine residents enrolled in a health care program of study. BOYNE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP Established in memory of Dr. Phillip J. Boyne, these awards are given to students being trained in the fields of care giving or nursing. Preference is given to students who have either worked in the past with geriatric populations and/or have a goal of

working in the specialty area of geriatric nursing. KELLY GORHAM MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP This fund was established by the family, friends and faculty of former SMCC Nursing student Kelly Gorham to honor her memory and spirit. MAINE EYE & EAR INFIRMARY ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is supported by the distinguished alumni of the Maine Eye & Ear Infirmary and is awarded to students in the nursing program who demonstrate academic merit and financial need. WOMEN S BOARD OF THE MAINE GENERAL HOSPITAL SCHOLARSHIP The Women s Board of Maine General Hospital provides generous scholarship support through various fundraising activities, with preference given to SMCC nursing students who plan to work at Maine Medical Center. Pre-Engineering RALPH B SKIP WILLIS & GORHAM SAVINGS BANK SCHOLARSHIP Administered by the Foundation for Maine s Community Colleges, this scholarship provides support to students enrolling in the pre-engineering program at SMCC s Midcoast Campus who intend to transfer to the University of Maine to obtain a bachelor s degree. Radiation Therapy RADIATION THERAY EDUCAION FUND This fund supports SMCC Radiation Therapy students. Sciences SUSAN BAXTER FAUST WOMEN IN SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP This award was established in memory of Susan Baxter Faust who enjoyed a lifelong career in the field of science/molecular biology to engage and support women studying science at SMCC. This scholarship will be awarded to students who are in their second year, are committed to environmental stewardship, and have financial need. Transportation AAA NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND SCHOLARSHIP This award, administered by the Maine Community College System, supports a student majoring in Automotive Technology who is a Maine resident, demonstrates good moral character, mechanical ability, and the desire for a career in the automotive technology industry. FOREST C. HODGKIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given in memory of Forest C. Hodgkin, a 1967 graduate of SMVTI and recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star. He died in service to his country during the Vietnam War. The award is given to an Automotive Technology student based on need and merit.

JAMES JOHNSON AUTOMOTIVE SCHOLARSHIP The James Johnson Automotive Scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in memory of James Johnson, who served as founder and long-term faculty chair of the Automotive Technology program. The award is given with preference to a student from Maine based on need and merit. RICHARD A.THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP This award was established in honor of former Department Chair Rick Thomas. When the Automotive Technology Program reopened in 2005, Rick rebuilt it into a nationally certified program. During his time at SMCC, Rick s love of teaching and care for others changed the lives of countless students, colleagues and business partners. This scholarship continues the thoughtful, generous support that Rick was always willing to offer. Community and General Scholarships AGNES LINDSAY TRUST SCHOLARSHIP This award is administered by the Maine Community College system and is divided equally among the seven Maine community colleges to be awarded to students from rural areas (towns of 15,000 inhabitants or fewer). ALEXANDER SCHOLARSHIP The Alexander Scholarship was established by a generous anonymous donor to provide financial support to full-time, nontraditional students who are also single parents. ALTURAS FUND FOR HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP The Alturas Fund for Higher Education Scholarship was made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor. This scholarship provides support to students based on financial need and academic merit. CARL H. ARNOLD ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Carl H. Arnold Scholarship provides support to multicultural students at SMCC who have high financial need, particularly those who are working to support themselves and their families here or abroad. CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS SCHOLARSHIP This is provided through the members of the CCC Chapter 111 in memory of Charles E. Knowles Sr., who was recognized for distinguished service in World War II and Korea. FRANK MORONG SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given in honor of Frank Morong, former full-time faculty member at SMCC, and is awarded to a single mother. JAMES ANGELO MEMORIAL SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in memory of James Angelo, an African immigrant who was killed while on duty as a security guard at Mercy Hospital in 2008. His dream was to attend SMCC and study Criminal Justice. This award is given to a Portland High School African immigrant graduate. GOVERNOR JAMES B. LONGLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Governor James B. Longley Scholarship is awarded annually in memory of the late Governor to a Maine resident who has succeeded as a student despite personal adversity. JOSHUA SLOCUM SCHOLARSHIP

These scholarships are awarded by SMCC through funds administered by the Maine Community College System. MAINE BANKERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP The scholarship is awarded by the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation to a full-time student who is enrolled in the second year of a business related program, is a graduate of a Maine high school or Maine GED program, is in good academic standing and has financial need. MARY REID MEMORIAL Established through the will and trust of Mary L. Reid of Gorham Maine, these scholarships honor her memory. MCCS PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded at the discretion of the President of the Maine Community College System to distinguished students. MORSE HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is made possible through the generous support of the Morse High School Scholarship Fund Board and provides scholarships to Morse High School graduates studying at SMCC. MORTON KELLY CHARITABLE TRUST This scholarship is awarded to full-time second year students. PARKER HANNIFIN & NICHOLS-PORTLAND SCHOLARSHIP For many years the Parker Hannifin & Nichols-Portland Company, which specializes in design and engineering work, has provided unrestricted scholarship support to SMCC students. PORTLAND PIPELINE CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded to students in the study of business administration, computer technology and electronics or the sciences. REDMOND FAMILY FOUNDATION This scholarship was created by a generous gift from the Redmond Family Foundation to support SMCC students. SMCC BEACON NEWSPAPER SCHOLARSHIP This award was established to provide financial support to SMCC students who contribute to the Beacon, the official student newspaper of Southern Maine Community College. STURDIVANT ISLAND TUNA TOURNAMENT SCHOLARSHIP The Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament Charitable Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization committed to the purpose of raising and expending funds in support of educational scholarships to deserving individuals and giving charitable donations to those in need. They award SMCC scholarships annually to Maine residents with academic merit and financial need. SUNRISE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL MULTI-CULTURAL and ESL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS For many years, the Sunrise Rotary Club has worked to provide much needed scholarship funds to support a variety of students at SMCC, including a special focus on supporting international and multi-cultural students. THE MAINE BLUES FESTIVAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship supports Maine students at SMCC who are working toward the completion of a college degree and who share the Festival s appreciation for the performing arts.

VETERANS SCHOLARHIPS FUND This scholarship was funded by an anonymous donor and provides financial support to veteran students at SMCC in honor of their service and their contribution to our community. THELMA SWAIN SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, named in memory of Thelma Swain a lifelong advocate and supporter of community college education is awarded to students in the nursing program. WOMEN S LITERARY UNION SCHOLARSHIP The Women's Literary Union of Portland Maine provided one time funding for three unrestricted scholarships with the preference that the recipients be women.
