BETTER BUILDINGS BUILD A BETTER ENVIRONMENT Steel is an environmentally friendly building material, and using steel roofing panels also creates opportunities to implement more ecofriendly solutions into your building designs. STEEL BUILDINGS ARE SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS Steel is not only one of the most economical building materials, but it s also the most widely recycled. Steel roofing is typically manufactured from at least 25% recycled steel, and is 100% recyclable. In fact, using recycled steel reduces mining waste by 97%, air pollution by 86%, water pollution by 76% and offers significant energy savings. SOLAR PANELS Standing seam roofing panels are natural mounting platforms for photovoltaic panels and other alternate energy products. COOL COATINGS Not only do our roofs allow you to implement energy-efficient solutions, but also the roofs themselves are made more energy efficient through the use of our advanced cool coatings. The high solar reflectance of our state-of-theart cool coating systems greatly reduces energy consumption and operating expenses. ENERGY STAR RATED PANELS Our cool-scape coated metal roofing panels are ENERGY STAR approved and listed. LEED CREDITS Our roofing panels have a high Solar Reflectance Index, are manufactured from recycled content and can be used in conjunction with systems that optimize energy atmosphere contributing toward increased LEED Credits. LEED RATING SYSTEM SUMMARY METAL ROOFING The LEED Rating System rates the aggregate system of a building. The individual components of a building do not, by themselves, earn points. However, this chart shows how products provided by Architectural Metal Systems can contribute to earning LEED points. This varies with the job site location Baggett Elementary Poole Elementary The Benefits of Going Cool In today s economic and environmental climates, an emerging key factor when selecting a roof is energy efficiency. Our metal standing seam roofing systems are treated with cool coating technology for optimal solar reflectance. To be considered cool, products must have a solar reflectance of at least.25. Solar reflectance is the fraction of the total solar energy that is reflected away from the surface. While conventional roof surfaces have a low reflectance of.05 to.25, our cool-scape metal roofs can achieve a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of up to 88, depending on the color. A higher SRI translates into reduced energy demand and increased energy cost savings for cooling seasons. Take, for example, the difference in energy savings between Poole and Baggett elementary schools. Two schools. Exact same size. Exact same design. Both were constructed exactly the same way and have exactly the same HVAC equipment, with their thermostats controlled at the exact same place. So how was one school able to save $10,000 on its annual cooling costs? The difference lies in the cool coatings of their roof systems Baggett Elementary School and Poole Elementary School in Dallas, Georgia, were identical right down to their AMS Evergreen LOC SEAM metal roof panels. The only difference: Baggett Elementary School used traditional PVDF coated roof panels with a total solar reflectance or TSR value of 12%. Poole Elementary School used infrared-resistant cool-scape PVDF cool pigment panels with a TSR value of 29%. The Results Poole Elementary School s annual cooling cost net savings is more than $10,000 because of the added TSR, which equates to a projected savings of $350,000 during the school s 35- year expected life cycle. These savings were confirmed in a thorough study by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory presented to the DOE/IRS in Washington, D.C. In addition, the added TSR did not jeopardize the school s ability to meet district appearance requirements. These savings represent the beauty of AMS s innovative thinking: better value in the short term and substantially improved efficiency in the long term. 4 5

Retrofitting your roof The right decision at the right time Factors at the forefront of any roofing decision remain the same: performance, maintenance and cost. In these economic times, using metal to retrofit an existing roof proves to be a smart decision that answers the financial demands of today and the life-cycle demands of tomorrow. Equipping your building with an AMS standing seam metal roofing system ensures exceptional performance, long-term durability and advanced energy efficiency. Because of its durability and performance, standing seam roofing provides a successful solution to the re-roofing market as a replacement for built-up and single-ply systems. In most projects a metal roof can be installed directly over the existing roof, eliminating costly and timeconsuming tear-offs, while normal day-to-day activities continue with little or no interruption in Before the areas being re-roofed. Standing seam metal roofs are recognized for their retrofit applications in which they ve become the preferred choice of schools, military facilities, warehouses and shopping centers. No roof lasts longer, requires less maintenance, offers such design flexibility or withstands the forces of nature better. Unlike a conventional flat roof, the standing seam metal roof provides drainage from rain and snow and eliminates ponded water problems that often cause leaks. AMS is equipped with Summit II advanced computer software that enables its Roofing Contractors to rapidly meet design requirements, price, and order roofs for any application. This allows for a dramatically shortened project completion time as well as a weathertight solution to leaking roofs. After An Installation Advantage Retrofitting Installing a new metal standing seam roof only requires a slope as low as ¼ inch. That slope can be created by installing light-gauge steel framing. A new metal standing seam roof panel system is then placed on top of this sub-framing system. Once in place, an AMS standing seam roof will last between 30 and 50 years or more. Re-roofing Replacing an existing sloped metal roof with AMS standing seam roofing eliminates the expense and hassle of removing the original roof. It simply requires positioning a light-gauge structural member, notched to span the original roof s ribs or corrugation, directly over the building s framing system. The member is attached to the roof secondary support members through the bottom flange of the member and the existing roof sheet. A new metal standing seam roof is then attached to the new member. The processes of retrofitting and re-roofing create a cavity between the old and new roof surface. This newly created space provides natural convective cooling. Known as Above Sheathing Ventilation (ASV), a continuous air gap from the eave to a ridge allows warmer air to vent, inducing natural ventilation that can reduce heat flow into the building up to 30 percent. Other systems can be added to metal roofing to further reduce energy consumption. 10 11
MORE DURABLE AMS standing seam roof panels are mounted on a concealed system of sliding clips, allowing the panels to move with thermal expansion and contraction forces, rather than being pulled apart by them like other types of roofing systems. RESISTS DAMAGE FROM WIND, HAIL AND SNOW AMS standing seam roof systems have stood the test of time when it comes to proven weathertight performance. In a standing seam system, 80% of the through fasteners found in other metal roof designs are eliminated ending a common source of leaks. Roof panels are joined at mechanically-locked seams that stand above the roof surface, further ensuring weathertightness. LIGHTER THAN MANY OTHER ROOF SYSTEMS In addition to enhancing the visual appearance of your building, the remarkable light weight of our roofing panels also reduces structural requirements, installation and shipping and handling costs. Building with Steel Roofing Panels is Building with Confidence Dynamic Colors and Design Metal roof systems are fast becoming the most recommended roof system by architects and roofers because of their attractive look and large choice of available colors and styles. All AMS standing seam metal roof systems can be ordered in a wide selection of panel styles with high-quality proprietary finishes in a range of today s most popular colors. CICPCONTRACTOR INSTALLATION CERTIFICATION PROGRAM CICP is all about a commitment to quality. It s a fact that the majority of metal roof failures are due to poor installation. ROOF LIFE-CYCLE COMPARISON SUB-FRAMING SYSTEMS In addition to its metal roof panel systems, AMS offers a number of engineered sub-framing systems to support the new roof system, and if desired, to economically change the existing roof slope or configuration. While they are generally used for retrofitting over existing deteriorated roof systems, these sub-framing systems may also be used in new construction. Hat section purlins over an existing structural system that run parallel to the roof slope. Existing roof slope to be maintained. Hat section purlins run at right angles to the roof slope and they support the new roof.* Hat section over existing structural systems running at right angles to the roof slope. Existing roof slope to be maintained. Hat section members are connected to the existing structural framing running parallel with it and perpendicular to the roof slope.* When life-cycle costs the initial cost, maintenance and thermal loss are factored into the overall value of a roof, metal standing seam roofs are proven to be the most economical investment. The metal standing seam roof can last on average up to four times as long as a conventional roof. AMS metal roofing systems offer many benefits, including a lower cost of ownership over the cost of a conventional roofing system. AMS consistently evaluates the energy reduction and life cycle of its metal roofing systems in order to provide the best LIFE-CYCLE COST: CONVENTIONAL FLAT ROOF VS. METAL STANDING SEAM Example: 100,000 sf (does not include energy cost savings) metal roofing systems in the industry. The costs associated with a roofing system are not limited to installation and material costs. Lifecycle costs are determined by comparing energy cost reductions, cost of maintenance and the life expectancy of the roof. When incorporating ownership costs into a metal roofing system that already has a life expectancy of 40 years or more, a conventional roofing system just can t compare.
