Each districts school calendar may not coincide with Auburns school calendar. Because of the strict 1500 hour requirement attendance is crucial. If your associate school does not have school but Auburn does you are still required to be here to receive your hours. Any student who does not meet the 1500 hours by the end of their senior year will not be eligible to take their State Board exam. Not taking the State exam will result in an incomplete/failure for the program and the loss of three credits. Any hours short of the 1500 hours will need to be completed at a private school to be eligible to take the exam. 6
Taking the State Exam If you are enrolled in the cosmetology program it is required for you to take the state board exam. Not taking the exam would result in an incomplete/failure for the program and the loss of three credits. Before the end of senior year we will go as a group on a field trip to Columbus to take the State Board exam together. The student s exam as well as field trip expenses will be paid by Auburn. INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY Students will practice and pass each hands-on skill with no less than a 90% score before working on clients. The highest degree of quality is always expected in all areas of the Cosmetology curriculum s competencies. Students are expected to have pride in their work and accomplishments. The Cosmetology curriculum is cumulative and requires students to use previous knowledge and apply it to other parts of the curriculum or build on the previous lesson(s). If students do not learn, study, and/or understand a lesson, the following lesson(s) will become more difficult. Also, if students are absent and do not receive the necessary instruction they will fall behind rather quickly. There are over 400 competencies the students must learn and master, as well as the related portion of the curriculum. Therefore, because of the large curriculum and the time constraints, we strongly encourage students to form study groups, have a study partner, and/or make flash cards so others may help them study. Daily attendance is critical to your success in the program. COURSE DESCRIPTION Auburn s Cosmetology program is designed to prepare students to enter the Cosmetology profession after taking and passing the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam and receiving their Cosmetology license. During the next two years students will embark on an exciting educational experience that will lead them to a very rewarding career in the Cosmetology industry. Each day the students are expected to come to school prepared with their textbook, study guide and something to write with. We will begin the day with a one hour related class where we will study the technical/written part of the program. After the related portion of instruction, students will move into the lab where we will do demonstrations and hands on work. Students will work on mannequins until they have mastered a technique. Once mastered, they may work on each other under the supervision of the instructor. * If you do not have your uniform and/or lab shoes you cannot be in the lab, as per Ohio State Board of Cosmetology rules. 7

Course Assessment Plan Performance standards are determined by industry and the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, and instructors. Grading for this course reflects these standards. Grade and Description: A (90 100%) B (80 89%) C (70-79%) D (60-69%) F (59 Below) To pass the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology Exam students must score 75% or higher on all competencies. The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology wants the cosmetology program grading scale to reflect exactly how a student would perform at the licensing testing. The failing grade at the state exam is 74%, therefore all grades need to be 75% and higher or the student may not pass the licensing exam. HOW GRADES WILL BE DETERMINED: Lab Work- graded daily (averaged for a weekly grade) Homework- graded daily (averaged for a weekly grade) Employability/Participation- graded daily (averaged for a weekly grade) Tests and Quizzes- graded and entered 20 points a day for Attendance (100 points weekly) Please note, that grades can drop quickly if homework is not completed or tests or quizzes are not passed. *Late assignments will have points deducted: ½ credit for 1 day late. Late assignments will not be accepted after 1 day. EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS In Career and Technical Education student performance is looked at just as business/industry would look at an employee on the job. The quality of tasks completed, time required, participation, attitude and consistency of effort, etc. are considered employability skills and are all a part of one s grade. (See appendix A5 for a complete list of employability skills) 11
ATTENDANCE AND MAKING UP ASSIGNMENTS: An excused absence simply means you may make up work in the number of days you were absent, HOWEVER, any missed demonstrations, lab practices, partner and/or team work will be almost impossible to make up. Any client work cannot be made up. It is your responsibility to get any missed work from the instructor or classmate. If an absence is unexcused, you may not make up any of the work that is missed, or if you do, a grade will not be entered for it. Daily skill or written assignments give practice for mastery and show the instructor comprehension of the material. Because this program builds on previous knowledge throughout the two years, you may need to apply a more concentrated effort on various topics in order to understand a future lesson/skill. THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 1. The students are required to complete a 120 hour internship (after completion of their junior year) at a salon of their choice. It will be completed outside of the school day, during the summer between junior and senior year. 2. The salon internship program requires students to write and keep a journal of the activities performed by the hour, as well as a timesheet to log the hours accumulated during the internship experience. Journal sheets are turned in weekly at Auburn and are graded. Any sheets turned in late will be graded as late. 3. Any changes made by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology may bring changes in the internship component of the program or the curriculum. 4. Not completing the internship would result in the student not qualifying to take their State Board exam which in turn would result in an incomplete for the program and a loss of three credits. COURSE POLICIES I.D. BADGE Students are required to have and display on them at all times an Auburn Career Center I.D. card, which is provided free during the first few weeks of school. The Auburn I.D. badge must be clearly visible and presented upon request to any teacher, administrator, resource officer or school personnel. If a student s original card is lost or stolen, a duplicate I.D. card must be purchased. The fee for a duplicate card is $5.00. SANITATION The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology Salon Sanitation Rules is given to students and is posted in all rooms/areas of the related classroom and lab. The rules are taught and tested. After the rules are tested students must abide by them. This is for their protection and safety while in the program or on internship. Any violations will not be tolerated. To do so would put you, clients, and classmates at risk. The school or salon may be fined for sanitation violations, which would jeopardize the internship program, thus your education. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty is not tolerated. You have to take responsibility for yourself and your work. Your reputation depends on honesty.
