ARTISSIMA 2013 Twentieth Edition 7 November 2013: Press view, preview, vernissage 8-9-10 November 2013: Open to the public Oval, Lingotto Fiere, Torino From Friday 8 November to Sunday 10 November 2013 (preview 7 November), the twentieth edition of Artissima, the International Fair of Contemporary Art, will be held in Torino, under the artistic direction of Sarah Cosulich Canarutto for the second time. The fair is organised by Artissima Srl, a subsidiary set up by Fondazione Torino Musei. Founded in Torino in 1994, over the years Artissima has constructed its own exclusive identity and carved out a unique place for itself among the leading international fairs, as a showcase for the finest work in the field of the visual arts. With a series of new initiatives and projects developed both within the fair and around the city, it built on its quality and expanded its international scope, while preserving the flair for cultural experimentation that is its distinctive hallmark. Artissima has proven itself to be a high-profile event, a meeting ground for professionals and a driving force that focuses attention on Torino and the surrounding area. For 2013, Artissima has taken major new strides in the internationalisation process that began last year, in terms of both the makeup of its various Curatorial and Selecting Committees and the presence of galleries and artists. Specifically, special attention has been paid to areas with an emerging role in the contemporary art world, encouraging participation by several countries from South America especially Brazil and Asia, in order to introduce diverse new viewpoints and bolster the fair s identity as a place for discovering the most interesting ideas on the international art scene. The special programme that Artissima dedicates each year to major international collectors has also broadened its geographic targets, drawing more and more art enthusiasts from all over the world. THE FAIR In 2013 Artissima will be presenting 190 galleries (60 from Italy and 130 from abroad), coming from 38 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe and the US. Compared to the past edition the foreign galleries number has increased and 12 new countries will take part in the fair. The galleries will be presented in the traditional five section: Main section: the section including the most representative galleries on the international art scene chosen by the Selection Committee of the fair. This year 108 galleries (42 from Italy, 66 from abroad) from 27 countries (Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Japan, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, South Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States) have been admitted to the Main Section. New Entries: the section devoted to the most interesting young galleries that have been operating for less than five years and that are being presented for the first time at Artissima. The Selection Committee of the fair has chosen 27 galleries (4 from Italy, 23 from abroad) from 14 countries (Albania, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Guatemala, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, United States). During Artissima a jury of international museum directors will assign the Guido Carbone New Entries Prize to the gallery considered most noteworthy for its activity in promoting young artists and for the booth project at Artissima. Present Future: a by-invitation section including solo shows by emerging artists and presented by their galleries in a central area in the fair pavilion. In 2013 Present Future has continued to evolve thanks to a

team of five renowned international curators coordinated, as for the past editions, by Luigi Fassi, who selected the projects of 24 artists, represented by 25 galleries (5 from Italy, 20 from abroad) coming from 12 countries (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Philippines, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States). For 13 years now, Present Future is realised in partnership with illycaffè which awards the illy Present Future Prize to the artist presenting the best project chosen by a jury of international museum directors. Since 2012, the Prize consists in the unique opportunity of an exhibition by the winning artist in the prestigious setting of Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art on the occasion of the forthcoming edition of Artissima. Back to the Future: launched in 2010, Back to the Future is the special section in the very centre of Artissima dedicated to figures active in the 1960s, 70s and, starting this year, the 80s. Since 2012, the section features museum-quality solo shows by artists who have played an important role in the history of contemporary art but who have not always received the visibility they deserve among the general public. The Curatorial Committee, responsible of both proposing and selecting the participating artists among the submitted projects, has chosen the works of 32 artists represented by 30 galleries (6 from Italy, 24 from abroad) coming from 12 countries (Argentina, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, United Kingdom, United States). Art Editions: devoted to galleries and other spaces presenting editioned works, prints and multiples by contemporary artists. Prizes Three prizes will be awarded to the artists and galleries taking part in Artissima: the illy Present Future Prize, an award for young artists that is now in its thirteenth year, and has forged a close collaboration with Castello di Rivoli; the Guido Carbone New Entries Prize, established by the fair in 2006 and reserved for galleries taking part in this section; and the new Ettore Fico Prize, set up in 2009 by Fondazione Ettore Fico to promote and support the work of young artists, which starting in 2013 will be awarded to an artist exhibiting at Artissima. This award is geared to the acquisition of a work for the collection of the newly founded Ettore Fico Museum in Torino. Walkie Talkies For 2013, the programme of guided tours at the fair introduces an interesting new feature: the Walkie Talkies are brief and informal conversations between two international curators aiming to achieve closer encounters with the art public. For such reason, instead of being held within a specific, fixed environment, the walking talks will take place among the booths, with the speakers invited to choose specific artworks or artists positions on which to focus their dialogue. The idea is to develop unique paths around works, situations, approaches or displays, using the booths as sets for the conversation. The Walkie Talkies are very brief encounters, formulated almost as intermissions, as opportunities to discuss, provoke, expose ideas and considerations. The programme, curated by London-based art critic Filipa Ramos, involves more than 20 international curators among which Kasper König, Andrea Viliani, Christine Macel, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Chiara Parisi. Walkie Talkies is a new and attractive way to learn more about the world of contemporary art that Artissima offers to all the fair visitors. Con/TEXT For the second year Artissima presents Con/TEXT, a special platform aimed at enriching the visitor s experience: a large and comfortable area in the fair s pavilion where people can relax, read, interact and share ideas. Con/TEXT includes the Artissima Bookshop, as well as the most important art magazines, and the Book Corner dedicated to the presentation of books and exhibition catalogues.

ONE TORINO Among new developments in 2013, one should note the important evolution achieved in the calendar of the curatorial projects that always accompanies the fair, weaving a complementary dialogue. Sarah Cosulich Canarutto s vision has drawn on last years experience to introduce an extraordinary, independent event with its own compelling identity and intrinsic capacity for development. ONE TORINO is the first edition of a major annual show conceived and produced by Artissima and realised in collaboration with the city s leading contemporary art institutions and exhibition venues: Castello di Rivoli Museo d Arte Contemporanea, GAM Galleria Civica d Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Fondazione Merz, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, and Palazzo Cavour. ONE TORINO is an ambitious new high-profile exhibition project, aimed at strengthening the network of local institutions through a wide-ranging international event that involves the finest contemporary voices on the international scene. The festival is meant to highlight Torino s outstanding qualities and help build the image of the city and its surroundings as a hub of contemporary culture. Furthermore Artissima will be starting this year a collaboration with Club To Club, the international festival of electronic music taking place in Torino in the same days of the fair. PRESENT FUTURE The long partnership between illycaffè and Artissima continues once again, for the thirteenth year running, with Present Future. This special section of the fair devoted to international emerging art has established itself over the years as a successful launching pad for the latest generation of talented artists, selected by a team of international curators and presented by their respective galleries in a dedicated exhibition area at the entrance of the fair s pavilion. In 2013 Present Future has continued to expand both as regards the number of curators involved and the number of selected artists. The section includes the projects by 24 artists represented by 25 galleries (5 Italian, 20 from abroad), invited by a curatorial team consisting of five young renowned international curators Alex Gartenfeld, Krist Gruijthuijsen, Robert Leckie, Qinyi Lim, and Alice Motard coordinated, as for the past editions, by Luigi Fassi. The artists will present new projects created especially for the event and works on display for the first time in Italy and Europe. illycaffè will award the illy Present Future Prize to the artist presenting the best project chosen by a jury of international museum directors. Since 2012, the Prize gives the winning artist the unique opportunity of exhibiting his/her works at Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art on the occasion of the forthcoming edition of Artissima. This new formula confirms the strong commitment of illycaffè and Artissima in supporting young international emerging talents. The first exhibition will be inaugurated on November 9: the Museum will host a great group show by the three winning artists of the past edition Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa, Vanessa Safavi and Santo Tolone curated by Andrew Berardini, Gregor Muir and Beatrix Ruf, jurors of the illy Prize 2012 together with Beatrice Merz, director of Castello di Rivoli. BACK TO THE FUTURE Back to the Future is a very unique section of Artissima dedicated to solo presentations of works of the 1960s, 70s and 80s by relevant artists who are not always well-known to the general public. The section is designed to focus the attention of artworld professionals, collectors, and the general public on artists who have played an important role in the history of contemporary art, or whose work influences artists today focusing on the latest experiments in contemporary art. EXHIBITING MUSEUMS Artissima continues its special project devoted to museums and art foundations in Torino and in the Piedmont region. Each institution has been invited to show one work from its collection or a work associated with its current exhibition. ARTISSIMA 2013 International Fair of Contemporary Art Sarah Cosulich Canarutto Artistic Director Sarah Cosulich Cararutto (b. 1974 in Trieste) was curator of the Villa Manin Centre for Contemporary Art in Udine from 2004 to 2008, curating over 20 exhibition projects. In the past she has worked in museums in Berlin and London, and in 2003 was assistant curator to Francesco Bonami for the 50th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. She contributed to the creation of the Cardi Black Box gallery as its artistic director, overseeing its curatorial programme for the first year of activity. She has been based in Switzerland since 2010, acting as advisor to several private collections. She has written about contemporary art for the art press and held seminars in museology and curatorship at Universities in Italy and abroad. She is the author of the monographs on Jeff Koons (2006) and Gabriel Orozco (2008) published in the Supercontemporanea series (by Electa Mondadori). In February 2012 she was appointed director of Artissima in Torino, where she now lives.

FONDAZIONE TORINO MUSEI Fondazione Torino Musei was officially founded on 26 July 2002. In 2004, it was entrusted with the management of Artissima by Città di Torino, Regione Piemonte and Provincia di Torino, the brand owners. Since 2008, the foundation has been the sole shareholder of Artissima srl. The museum structures that are part of Fondazione Torino Musei are GAM Galleria Civica d Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Palazzo Madama Museo Civico di Arte Antica, MAO Museo d'arte Orientale, and Borgo & Rocca Medievale. In addition to the City of Torino, which retains ownership of the museums, Regione Piemonte, Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CRT are also represented in the foundation, playing a concrete role in its decisionmaking process and development strategies. From the outset, the foundation s museums have been the focus of key projects aimed at reorganizing the exhibition spaces, important measures to safeguard and implement the collections, and major promotional initiatives to increase visitor flow and gradually improve the quality and efficiency of services for the public. Examples include the work that led to the reopening of Palazzo Madama and Museo d Arte Antica; the renovation and refurbishment of Museo d Arte Orientale; the restoration of the buildings in the Borgo Medievale, and the practical changes introduced at Galleria d Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. An intensive exhibition programme is curated and realized both in the museum spaces and at external venues, often in collaboration with other Italian and foreign cultural institutions.
