02 STEM Initiative Overview 03 STEM Initiative Overview How? Why? What? When? Where? Children love questions. Impossible questions... embarrassing questions... silly questions... clever questions. Children also love doing things... making things... seeing what happens. The difficult job is to turn that excitement into a love of discovery... an exploration... an adventure. Our Colleges interact with our schools and universities, with our businesses and industry to give our young people the vocational, technical and professional skills they need for the world of tomorrow. A learning environment where they can marry an enthusiasm for knowledge with the practical skills needed to get jobs in a world where technology advances every second of every day... where green technology... nanotechnology... biotechnology... are driving forward the world economy. In the world of tomorrow, jobs will require new skills - skills based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (together called the STEM subjects). This means we need to get more and more people interested in STEM subjects and understanding the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. Not just for their own career prospects or the economy but to enable them to understand the ever changing world. Empowering future generations through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to grow a dynamic innovative economy. While government and industry have identified STEM subjects as vital to the future of our economy - the truth is that as the world changes so are the skills that people need to understand it and to carve out their own future. The - CSI - is about encouraging more people to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and also develop an awareness of the exciting and rewarding career opportunities available. Not just for young people but for everyone. It is about opening up a world of opportunity and exploration. It is about partnership with businesses and industry to develop training that meets their needs and the needs of individuals for today and for the future. It is about creating opportunities for schoolchildren to experience the wonder of investigation; and building two-way pathways between schools, colleges, universities and businesses and industry. Our six Colleges are based across 47 campuses and operate from some 400 outreach locations including schools and community centres. They deliver over 3,600 courses to some 200,000 learners ranging from entry level to degree and post-graduate level. They are the skill provider of choice across Northern Ireland. They are working with local businesses, both big and small, and with inward investors and companies wanting to expand to give our workforce the skills they need for the 21st century. Competing in a global economy means we must make the best use of our talents and efficient use of our resources Our Colleges are committed to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths for the future of Northern Ireland s economy. To understanding why young people opt out of studying STEM subjects - and working to bring young people back into contact with Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths. We need to keep alive the passion of our children for investigation. We need to encourage our local companies to be more ambitious - to invest in and develop the skills of the workforce. To innovate - and let new ideas come to the fore. To turn good ideas into opportunities.

04 BT Young Scientist Exhibition 05 South Eastern BT Young Scientist Exhibition The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is an annual event that encourages students from across the island to devise innovative projects based on the essential skills of science, technology, engineering and maths. Organised and sponsored by BT, the exhibition is now in its 47th year and is one of the longest running and largest of its kind in the world. Held in January each year, the exhibition showcases 520 competition entries from participating students, alongside informative stands by leading private and public sector organisations, and a host of national and international special acts. A business skills programme has been recently incorporated into the exhibition to help selected students to learn the commercialisation techniques required to turn their ideas into potential business opportunities. The BT Business of Science & Technology Programme enables up to 50 students to undertake an intensive course with key business leaders and earn one of six summer placements in third level institutions. BT is supported in its organisation of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition by a number of partners including the Department of Education & Skills (ROI), Department of Education (NI), RTE, Analog Devices, Intel, and Discover Science & Engineering. visit www.btyoungscientist.ie South Eastern South Eastern offers you the chance to follow a successful STEM career as an Electrical Engineering Designer, Forensic Scientist, Games Designer and Animator, Product Designer, Plastics Technician, Refrigeration Specialist, Senior Lab Technician, Software Engineer, Veterinary Pathologist, Zoologist and thousands more!
