Unexpected data sources Many "sources of opportunity" available Many "unplanned areas of study" A few follow in the next slides

SW39 'Bottom Lander' before battery pack explosion On Aug 2, 2007 at 23:04:56 hours (GMT), a lithium battery pack short caused a massive gas leak which resulted in blowing both endcaps off the battery pressure case of a moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The explosion was heard on (and overloaded) all the SW06 hydrophone receivers. The furthest one from the explosion was SW49 (a single hydrophone receiver) at a distance of over 40 km away. If time later, will show ROV recovery movie. Lithium battery pack

Spectrogram of acoustic 'source of opportunity' reception at SW49 of ADCP explosion Broadband signal Used for bottom inversion Lowest freq head wave (through bottom) arrives first, then direct acoustic path, followed by multipaths (reverb). The other frequecies are from other SW06 sources.

Original Sei Whale signal at ch8 on WHOI VLA Very little known about Sei Whale vocalizations Receptions for only 2 days Sep 11-13. at very end of expt.

Mode filtering on VLA Mode 1 Mode 2 Goal: Use mode dispersion properties to back propagate to create/model original source signature Approach: Enough bandwidth for acoustics normal mode analysis Beamform using HLA Mode filter using VLA Mode 3 Sei whale signal with mode 1 and mode 2 overlayed on signal from Channel 3 on Sept 13

Fin Whale Vocalizations Laso have Fin Whale vocalizations Better studied in literature 3 separate animals below Q: are the different signatures considered communication? Audio sped up 5 times Vocalizations well-studied HLA beamformed and tracked Audio sped up 10 times

What we have now Rich data set Novel studies still available Get information online What's next Data available Cooperation encouraged Possible SW06 collaboration with WHOI/RPI ocean informatics initiative NSF funded Develop new data fusion and visualization tools They are interested in working with us and the SW06 data set.

If time, a movie

SW39 Movie The SW39 mooring release jammed so the bottom-mounted mooring had to be recovered with the aid of an ROV which made a video of its approach to the mooring (next slide). The explosion audio was over-laid onto the video. Notice the after-effect (reverb) of the audio portion of the explosion on the video. It was almost musical perhaps even a little scary.
