Our Commitment to the Future of Nursing Blueprint 1. Remove scope-of-practice barriers. Advanced practice registered nurses should be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training 2. Expand opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts 3. Implement nurse residency programs 4. Increase the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020 5. Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020 6. Ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning 7. Prepare and enable nurses to lead change to advance health 8. Build an infrastructure for the collection an analysis of interprofessional health care workforce data
Our Commitment to Specialty Certification Pay differential is given for specialty certification In 2013, North Shore-LIJ paid out $3 million in certification pay for our RN s 29% of RN s hold at least one certification 11% hold more than one specialty certification
Our Commitment to Specialty Certification (cont d) 73% of our NP s are board certified (594 NP s employed) Our critical care nurse fellowship program prepares fellows for specialty certification 25% of the nurse fellows are specialty certified Our clinical ladder requirements attach value points to specialty certification
Why North Shore-LIJ Makes this Commitment The assumption is Knowledge, clinical skills and clinical judgment Make a Difference Conversely, lack of foundational knowledge and poor clinical judgment results in error Evidence suggests that clinical skills deteriorate over time Certification is proxy for competence: assesses foundational knowledge and the integration of new knowledge over time Facilitates ensuring that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and training Enhances professionalism
Advancing nursing credentialing research is important and needs to be conducted BUT it is not essential for making the organizational decision to require, encourage, foster and financially support specialty certification We require our physicians to be board certified why wouldn t we have the same requirements for our nurses?
