Students learn about the basic molecules that form the earth, living creatures, and man-made products. Chemists may use their knowledge and training to develop newer, stronger materials or more effective pharmaceutical products. BECOME A STEM TEACHER President Obama called for training of 100,000 new teachers to prepare students for the 2.7 million new jobs expected by 2018 in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The teaching profession is challenging and rewarding. As a science or mathematics teacher, you will awaken creativity in your students and provide a foundation for lifelong learning - a spark that will burn brightly for a lifetime! The Secondary Education program is delivered collaboratively with Purdue University Calumet s College of Education and designed for those interested in teaching in middle and high schools. As part of teacher preparation coursework, you will begin working with young adults early in the program. To earn a teaching license in life sciences, physical sciences (chemistry and physics) or mathematics, you must pass state examinations in your content area. How it works You will earn your BS degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Sciences, or Mathematics. This provides you with added flexibility. In addition to teaching middle or high school, you can use your degree to pursue any area in the discipline of the degree, because it is the same credential as any other major in that discipline. However, you have the added advantage of taking required education courses needed to be licensed to teach. By coming into Purdue Calumet expressing an interest in secondary education, we will provide additional, specialized advising and guidance to ensure your success. The education courses you will take are counted within the total credits required for your degree. Achieving and Succeeding Lauren Nelson Lauren Nelson completed her mathematics student teaching in an urban high school in Purdue Calumet s host city of Hammond, Indiana. On evaluations of her teaching, Lauren scored outstanding for taking her students to a higher level of understanding. Biological Sciences Master of Science, Biology: The biological sciences department offers MS in Biology with both Thesis and Non-Thesis Options. Courses are available in biotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, human biology, and ecology. Graduate level elective courses are offered year-round, making it possible to graduate with a non-thesis option in just three semesters. A diverse course schedule accommodates both full-time and part-time students. The Certificate in Engineering Project Management can be earned upon satisfactory completion of four of the following courses: Advanced Engineering Project Management (Required), Advanced Engineering Economics (Required), Quality Control, Industrial Applications of Statistics, COLLEGE and Systems OF Engineering.
