Department of Library Services www.library.dmu.ac.uk Library Services Computing Facilities and Equipment Library Services at De Montfort University offers a wide range of computing equipment and software in various locations across the university s buildings and campuses. This help sheet describes what is available and where it can be found. The Standard Library Computers Our standard computers run the Windows XP operating system and have the full Microsoft Office software installed and a range of Web browsers, information resources, and library online self-service facilities. They are all equipped with CD Writers and USB connections enabling the connection of devices such as USB sticks and digital cameras. They have the following range of software installed: Internet Explorer 7.0 Web Browser Firefox 3.0 Web Browser Word 2007 XP Excel 2007 XP Powerpoint 2007 XP Access 2007 XP Publisher 2007 XP SPSS 16 Acrobat Reader 8 Blackboard, mydmu and Student Email Calculator Online help Adobe Digital Endnote X2 Adult Directions Library Catalogue Nero CD Burn Notepad Paint Picture Manager Power DVD Clip Organizer 2007 Slide Collection itunes

Our Internet Explorer 7.0 installation incorporates the following plug-ins: Media player Real player Quick time Shockwave Flash SVG Viewer Silver Light Java All standard computers are linked to the printing system enabling students to print to some or all of the following media depending on location: A4 Plain Paper Black & White A4 Plain Paper Colour A4 Acetate Colour A4 Gloss Colour A3 Matt Colour See the section entitled Printing Facilities at the end of this document for a list of library printing facilities available at various locations. You will find our Standard Library Computers in the following Locations across the University One hundred and eighty computers at the First Floor One hundred and four computers at the Second Floor Sixty computers at the Ground Floor Learning Zone Five computers at the Lower Ground Floor Abstracts & Indexes Section Eric Wood Building Learning Zone Self Service Facility Seventy seven standard computers Charles Frears College of Nursing Campus Charles Frears Campus based on London Road has its own library offering IT facilities and has standard computers installed in the following rooms: Room L5 on the first floor has nineteen standard computers Room L15 on the first floor has seven standard computers Another five standard computers are situated in the first floor quiet study areas Charles Frears Campus Heron House Computing Laboratory Heron House at Charles Frears Campus has a computer lab with twenty of our standard computers. Although this building is remote from the campus library it is still part of the computer network and is a most useful resource for students when the main campus library computer rooms are very busy. Please note that this computer laboratory is used for booked teaching classes, so access cannot always be guaranteed. Certain specialist nursing applications are installed in this laboratory. Law Library (based in the new Hugh Aston building) The new law library has thirty one standard computers Law Library LPC Laboratory (based in the new Hugh Aston building) The LPC (Legal Practice Course) laboratory has twenty standard computers with additional specialist applications installed. Please note that access is limited to students enrolled on the LPC course.

Student Support Computers Student support computers with assistive technologies are available in various library areas across the city campus and Charles Frears campus, they have a range of specialist assistive software installed to support the learning needs of users with disabilities such as dyslexia. Software includes Inspiration, a software package to assist with concept mapping that can help dyslexic users. Zoomtext screen magnification software is available for users who have difficulty reading the screen. A software package named Read & Write is also available. This is designed to help computer users with reading, writing and spelling difficulties. Text can be read to the user via headphones and each computer is equipped with an A4 Flatbed Scanner. All computers have access to printing. Our student support computers are to be found at the following locations: Learning Development Zone has three Support Computers with another two scheduled for delivery in the near future. first floor IT area has three Support Computers has two private study quiet rooms on the lower ground floor each with a single Student Support Computer. These rooms are available via a booking system. Eric Wood Building Learning Zone Self Service Facility Two Student Support Computers Law Library (based in the new Hugh Aston building) One Student Support Computer based in the open access computer lab. Charles Frears Library One Student Support Computer in the small computer lab on the first floor. Graphics Computers Our wide screen Graphics Computers run the Windows XP operating system and are used for graphical work and photo manipulation, and so do not have Microsoft Office and the Internet available. Every Graphics Computer is equipped with an A4 Flatbed Scanner. The following software is installed: Adobe CS4 (Master edition) comprising: Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional Apple Effects Bridge Contribute Device Central Dreamweaver Encore Extended Script Tool Extended Script Manager Fireworks Flash Illustrator InDesign Life Cycle Designer Media Encoder On Location Photoshop Premier Pro Sound Booth Pixel Bender Mocha

You will find these Graphics Computers at the following locations: The Ground Floor Learning Zone has three Graphics Computers First floor has six Graphics Computers. second floor has nine Graphics Computers, one equipped with an A3 size Flatbed Scanner. Charles Frears Library Charles Frears Library has one Scanning Computer in Room L5 (large first floor laboratory). This computer is a standard RM setup linked to a scanner. It has optical character recognition software installed and can also scan pictures. imac Computers Our wide screen imac computer systems are equipped with A4 Flatbed Scanners and have MS Office for Macs and internet access available. They have the same range of software as the standard Windows based computers plus the following: Adobe CS4 (Master edition) comprising: Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional Apple Effects Bridge Contribute Device Central Dreamweaver Encore Extended Script Tool Extended Script Manager Fireworks Flash Illustrator InDesign Life Cycle Designer Media Encoder MS Office for Macs On Location Photoshop Premier Pro Sound Booth Pixel Bender Mocha Adobe CS4 is also available on the Graphics PC Stations at Kimberlin. Our imac computers are to be found at the following locations: First Floor IT area eleven imac Computers. Eric Wood Building Ground Floor Learning Zone twelve imacs, one equipped with an A3 size Flatbed Scanner.

CAD (Computer Aided Design) Computers These computers are dedicated to computer aided design and so only have the following software: Autocad Architecture 2009 We have four CAD computers based at the following locations Two at the first floor IT area Two at the Eric Wood building ground floor learning zone Microfilm Reading Computer At the journals section on the lower ground floor you will find one computer linked to a Microfilm reader. Using this system Microfilm images can be viewed on the computer, manipulated and printed. A help sheet is available explaining how to use the Microfilm system with the computer. Laptop Computers for Loan The Microfilm Reader and Computer The Kimberlin library has thirty wireless enabled laptop computers available for DMU students to borrow whilst working in the library. These computers have the same range of software installed as is to be found on the standard computers. To borrow a laptop computer go to the ground floor issue desk close to the library entrance. Library Catalogue Computers Across all library facilities you will find OPAC computers available for searching the library catalogue. Wireless Access Wireless network access is available in many library locations. If you have a laptop computer with wireless capability then you can apply for access to this network. For details and a list of wireless enabled areas throughout the university see the help sheet available at the Kimberlin first floor joint helpdesk. Syndicate Rooms and Eric Wood Building Group Study Areas The four Kimberlin library Syndicate rooms located on the ground floor each contain a laptop computer linked to a large plasma screen, making these rooms ideal for group discussions concerning any projects where Internet access and Microsoft Office software are needed. Syndicate rooms C and D have Smartboard software installed on the laptops and a Smartboard interface attached to the large plasma monitor. The Smartboard system can be used to enhance your group discussions, as you are able to write on the monitor screen. A detailed help sheet entitled Using the Syndicate Rooms is available at Kimberlin library. The sheet explains how to initially get the systems running and how to use the Smartboard system. Syndicate rooms A and B have a laptop and large plasma screen without the Smartboard interface. All syndicate rooms are also equipped with a combined Video/DVD player linked to the large screen. The Eric Wood building learning zone has three non bookable group study areas with large plasma screens and combined Video/DVD players linked to the large screen. Students own laptop computers can be connected to the large screens. These systems do not have the Smartboard technology.

Printing Facilities & Eric Wood Building Learning Zone B&W A4 Printers Colour Printing for plain A4 Colour A4 Acetate Colour A4 Gloss Colour A3 Matt Four Deposit Stations situated in the Kimberlin library foyer for adding printing credit to accounts Note that although the Acetate, A3 colour and A4 gloss printers are not based at the Eric Wood Learning Zone area, jobs can be sent from the computers to the print queues for these printers and printed at the Kimberlin library. Charles Frears Library B&W A4 Printers available in each laboratory including Heron House One Colour Printer for plain A4 One Colour A4 Acetate printer One Deposit Station situated at the enquiry desk area for adding printing credit to accounts The colour printers are based on the first floor of the library. Jobs can be sent from the standard library computers in the laboratories to the print queues for these printers and printed out. Law Library (based in the new Hugh Aston building) One B&W A4 Printer in the Open Access Computer Laboratory Two B&W A4 Printers in the LPC computer laboratory One Deposit Station for adding printing credit to accounts Printing Charges For a full list of library printing charges please go to the following web page and look at the Computers at the section. http://www.library.dmu.ac.uk/services/computers/ Large Format Printing Larger paper sizes such as A1 and A2 can be printed at the Gateway House Printing Centre.
