Field Trips/Background checks As you may know, we now require all parents who accompany children on a field trip to complete a criminal background check. The district requires at least a 2-week window to get the background checks completed. If teachers turn in forms less than 2 weeks before the field trip, we will try to accommodate them, but we have no control over how long it takes us to get the forms back from the investigating agency. PTO Book Fair is coming up soon! Get a head start and check out the books before you get here on this link! http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/sbd Also, during the book fair, we will be having Eating with Someone Grand. Please look for those sheets to come home with your child. Our next PTO meeting will be March 3rd from 5:30-6:30 in the Art room. DON T BE SHY. Please come and help us brainstorm ideas for YOUR children. We would love your input! Page 4

February, 2015 Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s): During the month of February, a member of your school s Student Services staff will be talking to your child s class about personal safety. We want you to be aware of this so that you can help answer any questions your child may have and continue the discussion at home. These lessons are part of the district s personal safety curriculum and include such topics as common safety rules, safe and unsafe touches, keeping private parts private, reporting, assertiveness skills, and harassment; all topics are carefully adapted to the age of the children. The overall goal of this unit is for students to advocate for their personal safety. Together we help your children learn and practice personal safety. If you have any questions, or if you would like more information on this topic, please feel free to contact us. Sincerely, Sarah Connaughty Jenna Kvalheim Kisten Gillespie Student Services Staff Beaver Dam Unified School District No person may be denied admission to any public school in the district or be denied participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be discriminated against in any curricular, co-curricular, student services, recreational or other program or activity because of the person's sex, race, color, national origin, ancestry, creed, religion, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, handicap or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability in the educational programs or activities operated by the Beaver Dam Unified School District. Tracy Ghiloni, OT Nicole Hale, PT Stacie Heier, OT Leizel Orr, OT Special points of interest: Therapy Corner Movement Matters Even though winter is upon us and outside movement activities can be challenging to fit in because of weather, it is still important to keep your child moving! Movement is an important part of your child s learning. Movement before a sit-down activity can increase you child s attention and ability to concentrate. Here are some great tips to help get your child moving inside during those cold days! Activities to get moving and strengthen the arms: *Wheelbarrow walks ( When someone holds child s feet and he walks forward with his hands), crab walk, bear walk *Wall Push ups. (Have child stand a foot or so away from the wall and place his hands flat on it. Then do push ups standing up against the wall. Regular push ups are good to do also but hard for many children. *Crawling through the snow -Playing on stomach on floor propped on elbows during board games or video game play *Lie a blanket on the floor and roll up in it and then unroll *Shoveling snow *Taking garbage cans to the end of the driveway for pick up *Help carry groceries in the house *Build a tent/fort have child help move furniture/blankets Indoor obstacle course-make your child crawl, jump, push, etc Active games-twister,.charades Dancing You Tube is a great resource for videos (key words: brain breaks, just dance for kids, yoga kids) *Gonoodle.com has many fun videos to get your child moving
